'F*ck off Mercosur': Angry scenes outside Leinster House as farmers protest against EU trade deal

There were heated scenes in the crowd during today’s protest when a farmer rounded on Fianna Fáil’s Jackie Cahill.

THERE WERE ANGRY scenes outside Leinster House this lunchtime as farmers protested against the EU’s Mercosur trade deal.

A Sinn Féin motion to reject the deal is to be debated in the Dáil this evening.

Roscommon TD Michael Fitzmaurice received a rapturous applause when he took to the stage to address farmers.

He said from 2010 to 2012 “when there were no Mercs to be sold and no homes to be built, the country relied on you as farmers. Now, when the country is starring to move they think they can shite down on top of you”.

“Today is the beginning, the beginning of the rural revival. Today we will stand up and there is more of this to come.

“We will not be walked over, rural Ireland will live. Say fuck off to Mercosur,” shouted Fitzmaurice.

There were heated scenes in the crowd during today’s protest when a farmer rounded on Fianna Fáil’s Jackie Cahill.

Clearly unhappy with Fianna Fáil’s confidence and supply arrangement with Fine Gael, the protester said he would not be voting for Fianna Fáil again, telling Cahill they are the “same as the blueshirts”.

“There was a Fianna Fáil, but not anymore, Jackie,” he said.

The issue of the trade deal was also raised by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald during Leaders’ Questions today.

“You say that this deal needs to be assessed and tested,” she told the Taoiseach.

“It sounds to me like you’re quite prepared to throw farming families under the bus,” she added, stating that maybe his government had bigger corporate interests at heart.

“That’s how it sounds to me and I think that’s who it sounds to the farmers at the gate.”

Varadkar said the government would assess the deal, but admitted there are “downsides” to the beef sector.

9973 Farmers Protest_90575228 Leah Farrell Leah Farrell

However, he said there are “upsides” for other sectors like dairy and other businesses. He said the beef coming to the EU must be of the same standards produced by Irish farmers.

Today’s protested ended with farmers piling Wellington boots outside the gates of Leinster House.

Flanagan on RTE News at Six, defending the original decision and saying that this will go ahead but at a future date and that the original decision was the right thing to do. Fine Gael haven’t cancelled this, they have DEFERRED it, he said that thousands of people from all over the country will be very disappointed that the original date has been deferred. He hasn’t learned a thing from this debacle and also had the temerity to say that the Black & Tans will now be whitewashed from history because of the deferral. No apology to the people of Ireland for stirring the sh1 t and no mention of a cancellation of the commemoration, you cannot defend this kind of behaviour by a public representative.

@Frank Cauldhame: So basically Fine Gael have decided to defer this to later in the year in the hopes that it will have gone out of people’s heads by the upcoming General Election so that they can try and get voted in without it hanging over them, and then they’ll hold the commemoration after the GE if they get back into government. They could see how holding this event would backfire on their chances in the GE… So folks, don’t forget this and their intentions when it comes to how you vote. For me, they won’t even see a transfer.

@Daniel Roche: well a united ireland would only work if it could accommodate a unionist community right? so if there is public outrage here about a ceremony to remember the RIC (which also had catholics in its ranks), can you imagine the reaction when we need to talk about changing the flag, anthem, observing July 12th etc? I doubt today would inspire much confidence from the unionists either, especially those who were perhaps open to a united ireland.

@Benny: The current objections from people in Ireland to the idea of somehow honoring and commemorating the Black and Tans, RIC and other elements of the crown forces for their historic activities in Ireland, shouldn’t be too hard to understand.

And it’s not some rise of anti British people sentiment, because the majority of people in Ireland, even the most hard line in their nationalist views, have always been able to acknowledge that the British people were not responsible for the historic actions of the crown forces in Ireland, the British government of the day was.

Thanks to the peace process the majority have also moved on past the sectarian divides of the past, being able to forgive is one thing, but celebrating them?? That’s just a step too far.

@Benny: well that’s quite a list you have..

Flag :the tri colour represents both traditions on the island of Ireland, green for Irish Catholics, orange for Irish Protestants and white for the hope of peace between them both.

Anthem : I think Irish reunification would require a new anthem that wasn’t about breaking free from British tyranny because with reunification that goal would be achieved, so a forward looking United Ireland anthem would make sense.

Recognising 12th of July as a public holiday? : No problem, let anyone that wants to march to do so, once they don’t do so in areas of provocation and do so within the law. i.e. much like St Patrick’s day parades, in their own area for their own people, communities don’t impose St Patrick’s day parades on neighbouring communities..

need be discussed if ireland was to unify so I reckon its a very short list. For the flag, the chances of unionists saluting the tricolour are about zero I reckon. I absolutely agree with you on the anthem – but will everyone? And I also agree about July 12th, but again, will everyone be ok with that? Today gives me the impression that not everyone will be, which is a big hurdle.

@Declan Edward: Leo is gambling that by April, this will be at the back of the minds of most people. There’s little else he could do at this point, and I’m surprised he didn’t see the backlash coming; it was a pretty obvious prospect. Watch the govt swotting away at changing the narrative over the coming 3 months.

    @alan:
Consideration should also be given to the organisation of specific initiatives to commemorate the
Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) and to acknowledge
    their place in history.

It depends on how the event was actually to be done. The committee definitely didn’t want or recommend a state event like they did with the other ones they highlighted.

I would like to know who picked out this line and decided to run with it and what exactly was the event.
Fairly misguided and like a lot of government things there is layers of experts to shift through and people like Leo just turn up based on what their aid said and expect they will get a good photo op.
    Few bad decisions here ,
    All about the context though.
Considering the timing a lot of this is political bull and point scoring and I consider them all disengenious.

RIC participated in Black and Tan and Auxiliary activities and patrols. The RIC behaved very badly in the 19 Century as well. They shot dead tenants wh participated in a rent strike. Interesting that if things like this are cancelled how does anyone think we could have an eventual peaceful United Island. Where Unionist traditions would have to be remembered, celebrated officially by the state if there’s to be any level of assimilation and a feeling that they’re part of any possible new shared state. Doesn’t send a good message to any Unionist slowly thawing to the idea of a United Island as a result of the Brexit shambles.

That is why it was not on their recommended shortlist of events. This is a p.r. disaster of F.G’s making. You are seriously mistaken if you think that such an event would cut any ice with the DUP.

    Unfortunate, regrettable, shame.

Interesting choice of language used by Vradkar over the past two days in reference to the resistance towards this event.

It is obvious to most that it was a terrible idea but the undercurrent coming from FG is the whole country is wrong and they are right.
To be honest it smacks of a complete disrespect for the will of ordinary Irish people.

If that’s their attitude towards an emotional issue which in the grand scheme is inconsequential, imagine what the FG mentality will be like when it’s time to bring in another vastly unpopular tax such as the water charge.

    THE GENTLE BLACK AND TAN
    Breandán Ó hEithir

    Come all you staunch revisionists
    And listen to my song,
    It’s short and it’s unusual
And it won’t detain you long.
    It’s all about a soldier
    Who has carried history’s can,
Who dodged Tom Barry and Dan Breen
    The gentle Black and Tan.

    ‘Twas the curse of unemployment
That drove him to our shore.
His jacket black and trousers tan
Like a badge of shame he wore.
    “Subdue the rebel Irish
And shoot them when you can!”
“May God forgive me if I do,”
Prayed the gentle Black and Tan.

    The burning of Cork city
    Was indeed a mighty blaze.
    The jewellers’ shops were gutted
Not before the spoils were shared.
    Gold and silver ornaments,
Rings and watches for each man,
“But I only struck the matches,”
Said the gentle Black and Tan.

    Croke Park and Bloody Sunday
    Was our hero’s greatest test.
    The spectators on the terraces
    Nigh impossible to miss.
With salt tears his eyes were blinded
And down his cheeks they ran,
So he only shot Mick Hogan
    The gentle Black and Tan.

So take heed you blinkered Nationalists
    Fair warning take from me.
If you want to live in safety
And keep this land at sea.
Take heed of our three heroes
    Murphy, Edwards and Yer Man,
Who will sing the fame and clear the name
Of the gentle Black and Tan.

It was a stupid idea. Running a historical exhibition in the National Museum is one thing, but you don’t hold a commemoration ceremony for an organisation that carried out such acts of terror and brutality.
If you want to commemorate members, commemorate those who worked as double agents for IRA, or mutinied or resigned in protest when ordered to commit crimes against the Irish people.

I can’t find an adjective to describe them. While all Irish men loathe or propagate against what Leo has promised, how on God’s earth can we agree to allow this shame, arrogance, IGNORANCE, and condescension on our people happen. Fianna Fáil and Labour have to be rubbing their hands with glee (or are they willing to let this abomination happen?)

First person killed in the rising was James O’Brien an RIC man from Dublin?

He’s less Irish I guess because he’s a Dub or because he did what he needed to do to put food on the table by working for the Queen’s shilling?

The South is a hostile environment for Unionists. A United Ireland would see a Sectarian Catholic country practice apartheid on unionists/Protestants. Dublin government says they would never share power with Sinn Fein bur but send Coveney to Belfast to force Unionists to do just that, hypocrisy.
