Remember when Dublin media were branding Limerick, Stab City and then it received such negative coverage that it still effects tourism today. Would love to know the stats because the regularity of murders and stabbings in Dublin now is becoming ridiculous..

@GrumpyAulFella: Dublin media would the be the major journalist institutions that represent this country (based in Dublin with maybe exception of Examiner) … and then as for size.. I think if you did want to take that pro rata approach that you are promoting you may find that the 1.3m in Dublin and 3.4m outside Dublin.. there is a far greater portion of crime, murder, stabbings in Dublin. Clown.

@Glenn O’hAilpín: just to put you straight on a couple of things. You’re referring to the national media who have their HQs in Dublin. Where do you think the vast majority of their journalists are from? Hint, it’s not Dublin. The phrase “stab city” was made popular by a comic writer for Scrap Saturday called Gerry Stembridge. Guess where he’s from? Frank McCourt used it in Angela’s Ashes and brought it to the attention of the national media, based in Dublin. Guess where Frank is from? Clown is right.

@GrumpyAulFella: Let’s all remember that the media didn’t perform the killings in Limerick… Let’s remember that in 2007, there were over 103 shootings in Limerick. That’s about one every three days. Some years, there were dozens of bomb attacks in the city. The stabbings were generally for some high profile gang members (remember when yer man was stabbed 17 times in the face and survived?!!?). So yeah, Dublin had a stabbing last night, but Limerick, for a city of it’s size, thoroughly earned it’s title in the early noughties, but folks memories fade over time and the quantity of reporting has increased, meaning things can seem worse, when they’re actually far improved.

@ant: Ireland has the 11th lowest homicide rate in Europe and the 23rd lowest in the world, according to a United Nations (UN) study. At a rate of 0.9 per 100,000 it’s ways down vs the 2007 rate of 1.8 per 100,000. What about super recent stats… Like how the annualised crime rate for homicides is down 14% vs 2018 in the latest CSO report. I’m not out to have a pop at Limerick, but I’m trying to help people realise that just because you wake up and before you have one trouser leg on, you know if there was a punch up outside a bar in Banagher last night, it doesn’t mean that things are worse today than they used to be.

I dont see any issue with expressing my opinion that there was an established understanding at the time that a clever way to sell papers was to adopt the Stab City branding. It’s just Marketing. However from watching and reading the news these last few months MY OPINION is that there is not that same approach taken by the media as was taken with Limerick. As for those attacking Dublin or other parts, across the last 5 quarters of stats, (2018 + Q1 2019) there were 93 homicides, with 27 of them being in the Dublin area, 8 in the south east, 11 in the East, 16 in Southern (Cork + Kerry + Limerick), 10 in Western and 21 in Northern region (Louth, Cavan, Mon, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal).

By population, Dublin is a bit higher, but hardly by much, right? So, I guess the main thing here is folks remember what they want to remember.

@The Quare Fella: in 2003, London had 221 murders. In 2018, London had 137 murders, despite the increase in population. 137 represents a spike over the past 7/8 years following cut backs in all forms to police, schools and support services. Reporting of crime has increased more than anything which leads to comments like the two above me, who think the sky is falling down on them and the reason why is foreign, despite the reality that London had twice as many murders in the city 20 years ago with a smaller population.

    - The Dublin region has far more cases of recorded offensive weapon crime
    - Recorded offensive weapon crime in Dublin today (2019Q1) is almost half of what it was in 2010 (2010Q2)

Interesting that most of the crime, murders and drug fueds are always carried out by criminals from the Inner city even when you go out to the Suburbs like Tallaght, Ballyers etc you will find that they mostly originated from the Inner city not that aren’t a lot of decent people in these areas either but it’s something they needs to be addressed as it has been getting worse in the last few years.
