Boris Johnson has been elected Conservative party leader. Kirsty O'Connor

Boris Johnson has been elected the new Conservative Party leader

The Conservative Party’s 1922 committee made the announcement this morning at Westminster’s Queen Elizabeth II conference centre.

BORIS JOHNSON HAS been elected as the leader of the Conservative Party in Britain, following a vote by about 160,000 party members.

He was elected by 92,153 votes to 46,656, securing support from 66.4% of the party members who voted.

Some 87.4% of the eligible 159,320 members cast a vote in the leadership contest.

The Conservative Party’s 1922 committee made the announcement this morning at Westminster’s Queen Elizabeth II conference centre following three weeks of voting.

Johnson was the frontrunner from the outset to take the premiership after Theresa May announced she would resign from her role as party leader and British prime minister from 7 June.

She remained in a caretaker role until the new prime minister was chosen but will formally give up the position to Johnson tomorrow.

Johnson, the former lord mayor of London, saw off competition in the Tory leadership race from nine other candidates over six weeks.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt survived five rounds of voting by Tory MPs, going into a face-off with Johnson, but failing to win enough support from his colleagues to overtake the 55-year-old Londoner.

Johnson will travel to Buckingham Palace tomorrow where he will formally be asked to form a government by Queen Elizabeth.

At the same time, Theresa May will travel to the palace to hand in her resignation.

Johnson worked as a journalist for several years during the 1980s and 1990s at publications including The Times and The Daily Telegraph.

In 2001, he successfully ran as a Conservative candidate for Henley in Oxfordshire, and in 2008 was elected to the first of two terms as the mayor of London.

He returned to Westminster in 2016, following the general election, taking a seat in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip area of London.

He cemented himself at the fore of the pro-Brexit campaign, against the views of the then party leader David Cameron, and remains steadfast in his calls for Britain to leave the European Union.

Johnson continues to write regular columns for the pro-Brexit Daily Telegraph newspaper.

With support from people like Donald Trump, who last week said he “looks forward to working with him” and that he will “work out Brexit,” Johnson has promised the British people that he will leave the EU with, or without, a deal in 14 weeks’ time.

Today, the US president tweeted his congratulations.

Tweet by @Donald J. Trump Donald J. Trump / Twitter Donald J. Trump / Twitter / Twitter

Although there is much work still to be done on Brexit, Johnson will have six weeks to settle into Downing Street, as parliament goes into recess for the summer break.

It is due to return on the 3 September when MPs will once again continue to debate the UK’s divorce from the EU.

Just minutes after today’s announcement, EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier tweeted about Johnson’s new position.

“We look forward to working constructively with Boris Johnson when he takes office, to facilitate the ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement and achieve an orderly Brexit,” he wrote. ”We are ready also to rework the agreed Declaration on a new partnership in line with EUCO guidelines.”

The UK is due to leave the EU on or before 31 October.

    @GrahamMManning: Gladly!

Barnier’s already indicating some weakening of the EU position. I hope I’m wrong, but if faced with Hard Brexit or making some compromise, the EU always take the compromise route. It’s how it functions – decisions by consensus and fudging. I don’t mean that as a criticism of the EU or the decisions it will make; it’s more a reflection of it designed way of working.

    Again, I hope I’m wrong.

@Peter Hughes: It’s fine to say that it cannot happen without parliament, but it is the default position. Another position has to be agreed to avoid the default happening. There are only four options: agree to revoke Art 50, agree to request to extend Art 50, agree to exit with May’s deal, or agree to nothing and exit with no deal. The final option is what will happen unless and until parliament agrees to do one of the other three. Voting to prevent a Hard Brexit is like voting to have the tide stay out. It takes positive action to stop the rising water levels, and unless action is taken, that tide is coming in.

@Mumpsimus: I mean not like in my opinion, they legally can’t. That’s like saying Ming Flanagan can tell Ireland what to do because he’s an MEP. That’s not how voting works. For example on the Counicil of ministers each country gets one minister. On the topic of Brexit Deal the vote to accept must be unanimous by all 27 countries.

My opinion is thst Germany are not the baddies, they’re actually quiet lovely if you go and visit Cologne.

Look at who he’s emulating. There was a time when ignoring a Congressional Subpoena was a major deal!

@Tricia G: He can’t because the decision to crash out with the worst kind of no deal would come down to the Queen of England closing parliament to force it through and she wouldn’t do because she’d be acting directly against what parliment has voted for. If she did it would be the end of the Royal Family as the ceremonial role would forfeited. Royals are not allowed make political decisions.

I know you’re going to say “Well it could happen, crazy world” but no Tricia, Cromwell happened and the Queen is not going to grab power from Parliament like it’s pre 1801. Go to the Royal Family website where it says in black and white “Although The Sovereign no longer has a political or executive role, he or she continues to play an important part in the life of the nation”. Not happening. No.

Boris would have had some support but I’ll bet that the majority of the new members voted almost entirely for him.

Everybody with whom Boris has to deal with in the coming weeks has been derogated by him at some point, sometimes in a racist, sexist or nasty manner. Not very clever to do this with such a small majority in the Commons or with a mountain to move in Brussels.

Just back visiting Ireland from the UK after being there the last 6 months. I was in Tescos and one political genius (I think that’s everyone in Ireland) told me Boris is going to be actually Hitler to the Irish. Also watched The Tonight Show last night. Honestly people seem thick as shit here with their sky is falling down routine. They praise the EU and bail out the banks as they have their taxes increased and their rights taken away. Time for a minimum requirement criterion to vote based on IQ.
