Civil War grenade found in Malahide and made safe

An Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived at the scene shortly after noon today.

A CIVIL WAR ERA grenade has been located and neutralised in Dublin this afternoon.

Following a request from An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces’ sent an Army Bomb Disposal Team to investigate a suspect device in Malahide.

The team arrived on scene at 12.15pm.

On arrival a cordon was established and nearby buildings evacuated for the duration of the Defence Forces’ operation.

The object was identified as a Civil War era ‘Mills bomb’ grenade. It was made safe and removed for disposal at a safe location. The team left the scene 12.55pm.

If you see a suspicious item or hazardous substance, the Defence Forces advise that you maintain a safe distance from the item and inform An Garda Síochána.

@ThatLJD: Actually, this grenade was used by the British Army during WWII, and was in service in the Irish DF up to 1972. It was called Mills 36 because when it detonated it split into 36 pieces of shrapnel.

@Josh Hanners: firstly, the grenade in the picture is indeed an F1, and whilst you are correct as to the usage of the Mills 36, the 36 does not have a protruding detonation chain, finally, it’s a file picture anyway, not the one from the incident

@Paul O’Sullivan: grenades were made during the War of Independence in various place including Inchicore Works in Dublin. I know , as my grandfather was involved in the making of them and then shipped out to various assembly points through Dublin.

@Paul O’Sullivan: how are we ever meant to move on if you still harbour ill will towards Collins? Your leader is propping up a FG government, if they can do that you can get the chip off your shoulder.

@Paul O’Sullivan: What would you prefer, that we had rejected the treaty and lost everything in Lloyd George’s total war? Collins was the greatest Irishman to ever walk the earth, he’s our George Washington. The Cuban took the same oath in the end and declared it “an empty formula of words”, if he’d done that 10 years earlier we’d have saved ourselves a Civil War. De Valera was a traitor and so was every Irregular that followed him.

“History will remember the greatness of Collins, and it will be remembered at my expense” – Eamon De Valera
