Another exit: Donald Trump has lost his White House intelligence chief

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats will leave the administration next month.

US INTELLIGENCE CHIEF Dan Coats will leave office next month, Donald Trump has announced, after a tenure in which he was regularly at odds with the president.

The departure of Coats — who has, however, sought to avoid direct confrontation with Trump during his time as Director of National Intelligence — is the latest high-profile exit from the mercurial president’s turnover-plagued administration.

Trump tweeted that Coats will leave on 14 August, saying he plans to nominate Representative John Ratcliffe of Texas, who serves on the House intelligence, judiciary and homeland security committees, to replace him.

“A former US Attorney, John will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves,” Trump wrote, also thanking Coats “for his great service to our Country.”

If Ratcliffe’s nomination is approved, Trump will get an intelligence chief who is more in synch with his views.

In Congress, he has been a staunch defender of Trump and has criticised two of the president’s nemeses, former FBI chief James Comey and special counsel Robert Mueller.

Ratcliffe has also said he has “seen no evidence” that Russian election meddling helped bring Trump to office, has backed the president’s assertion that court-approved surveillance of his campaign amounted to spying, and has supported his hawkish policy on Iran.

The choice of Ratcliffe was hailed by various Republicans — including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who tweeted that he “will bring strength and accountability in his new role” — but drew criticism from other quarters.

“Our Director of National Intelligence should be above partisan politics, speak truth to power, and resist Trump’s abuses of authority. John Ratcliffe doesn’t fit that bill,” Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren tweeted.

Coats has not seen eye-to-eye with Trump on a range of issues while serving as the official who oversees and coordinates the CIA, NSA and other US espionage bodies.

Russia, N. Korea

He backed the US intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election that brought Trump to office — something the president was long loath to acknowledge.

The intelligence chief also disagreed with Trump’s decision to hold two hours of closed-door talks with Russian President Vladmir Putin in Helsinki in July 2018 with no one else present but interpreters.

“If he had asked me how that ought to be conducted, I would have suggested a different way,” Coats said.

He acknowledged he was not informed about the contents of the talks, saying three days after they were held: “I don’t know what happened in that meeting.”

Trump’s attempts to get North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal via talks with Pyongyang’s leader Kim Jong Un was another point of disagreement.

“We continue to assess that North Korea is unlikely to give up all of its nuclear weapons and production capabilities, even as it seeks to negotiate partial denuclearization steps to obtain key US and international concessions,” Coats said in the annual “Worldwide Threat Assessment” report earlier this year.

North Korea’s leaders see having a nuclear weapons capability as “critical to regime survival,” Coats said.

Trump, however, has taken the view that Kim is willing to give up his nuclear arms.

Coats’ departure is the latest of a dozens of White House aides — from attorney general Jeff Sessions to press secretary Sean Spicer and chief of staff Reince Priebus — who have either left or been sacked from their positions since Trump took office on January 2017.

Imagine being the person who paid 400€ on done deal when the 3rd date sold out. Then the two additional dates were announced and prices plummeted, and now the whole thing is called off.

So not only do they not get their money back, but they don’t even get to see the concert they vastly over-paid for! And the stranger who sold them the ticket will prob get money back from ticket master!

That is defo no way to do business!!! I don’t blame him, who needs that hassle and shite!!!

I find it difficult to understand how people are refusing to acknowledge that 1) There is an agreement in place between Croke Park Management, GAA and the Residents for no more than three (3) concerts a year {an agreement made at the time of the stadiums redevelopment} 2) People still somehow manage to blame the Residents in all this.

It wouldn’t matter if it was only one resident, Croke Park and GAA reneged on the agreement. That’s where the fault lies.

At the end of the day, an agreement was already in place to allow a maximum of three concerts at Croke Park per year – rules are rules. Secondly, why would you sell tickets before securing the venue?!
Also, Garth Brooks claimed that Ireland was his “favourite place to sing” (www.bbc. co. uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-26013687) and if that’s the case, you’d think 3 is better than none at all, rather than a stubborn “all or nothing” approach.
Working in the public sector I can understand the Council’s decision, it’s Garth and his management who I think could have made better decisions…

Spot on Brian. Now the reasons to have the concerts retained were on the grounds of money generated by having the concerts. On this premise Croker would probably want concerts maybe 20 or 30 times a year by justifying the benefit to the economy! Maybe clear the national debt in six months. The 2009 agreement was deliberately ignored by those connected with organising the concerts. They deluded themselves by relying on “custom and practice” of subject to licence. Dublin City Council then tried be the “cute hoor” with their hamfisted effort. All except the residents made a choice to ignore the fact that an agreement existed. If Garth Brooks knew of the agreement would he have agreed to perform?

I didn’t realise the GAA promoted concerts.

And if this fabled agreement actually has the force of law

    A. Why did Mr. Keegan give permission for three concerts being that three had already taken place this year?

    B. If he did mean to enforce the agreement why did he not tell Aikens when the concerts were announced back in February that One Direction had the three concerts for this year and that there would be no further concerts.

Aikens and the GAA have consistently said they never felt that permission would be refused in all their dealings with the DCC. The DCC have not contradicted this.

Mr. Keegan and the planning department have a lot of questions to answer

Keegan works for Dublin City Council. The agreement regarding 3 concerts per year is between Croke Park and the residents. Nothing to do with Dublin City Council. Why did Croke Park even offer the stadium for concerts when they knew the ONE Direction concerts had exhausted their quota for the year. Blame here needs to be laid at the door of the GAA and the promoter.

Ah. The fabled agreement that’s not worth the paper that it apparently never been printed on.

DCC councillors had no say in this. The decision was Keegan’s alone acting on advice from DCC planning department.

So again. Why did he engage at all if he believed that the concerts could be go ahead due to the fabled agreement? And why did he give permission for three when three had already taken place this year.

If the agreement was worth anything these concerts would have been announced on a Monday and postponed on a Tuesday.

FF have said they will get the concerts back on if we promise our votes in next GE
All other parties will likely follow suit
We urge everybody to write a strongly worded letter to somebody
    Together along with Joe Duffy
    We can get through this

All this talk about lost revenue fails to point out that most of the money would not have come into the country. It would have come from other parts of the country. So bluntly speaking badly needed money would be transferred to the benefit of Dublin. Just robbing Peter to pay Paul. So stop the fantasy about huge loss of revenue to the country!
