'Players Please': Locals highlight history of Dublin 8 factory as redevelopment looms

Plans for the Player Wills Factory in Dublin 8 include building 1,400 new apartments.

DUBLIN 8 LOCALS have launched a campaign to highlight the history and possible use of a soon-to-be-redeveloped site on South Circular Road.

A local group has now set up a Facebook and Instagram page. ‘Players Please’ is a project aimed at highlighting the past, present and future possibilities for the old Player Wills Factory in Dublin 8.

Having trawled through archives, locals plucked photographs dating back to the 1950s and 1960s and posted them online alongside images of the building’s current state – courtesy of Irish Photo Archive.

“People who live in the area, we all have a grá for the building,” said a spokesperson for the group. “It looks amazing, there’s not much like it left these days.”

“Given what it looks like on the inside, it just illustrates its potential to be so many other things than just demolished and apartments built in its place.”

The Player Wills site, which is listed on the council’s vacant sites register, adjoins the vacant Bailey Gibson industrial lands. Recently, there has been a push for affordable housing to be built on the site.

Up until December last year, its loans were held by the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) but have since been repaid.

The site is owned by Players Square Limited and, in late December, those loans were refinanced by American property company Hines, which is also behind the Central Bank redevelopment, meaning the site can now be redeveloped.

Last month, Hines invited D8 locals to inspect their plans for the site at the old Players Factory which it intends to submit to An Bord Pleanála by the end of the year.

Plans for the site include 1,400 apartments with new streets, parks and local amenities. With more than 100 homes planned for the site, a planning application can be sent straight to ABP.

The developers have said the homes on the site will be predominantly build-to-rent.

Constructed in 1935 as a factory for Player Wills tobacco, the building remained in use until 2005.

One local told TheJournal.ie that Hines could pass planning stages with little consideration for the needs of the community now and long term – not to mention the opportunity to create something genuinely thoughtful.

“We’re focusing on ‘Players Please’ but we’re concerned with the overall site. We would love to see something there that’s an attraction for the area,” the spokesperson said.

“Something that benefits the community, good for tourists as well as housing.”

There are no errors in the tabloid world he inhabits. Just increasing invasion of people’s privacy and a growing disregard for any kind of moral principles. That is what RM’s empire is founded on. As we now know.

Don’t know what world you love in Connor but if my little girl was killed like that and some prat from Sky decided to rummage thru her belongings before family I’d murder the thick. Should be sacked on the spot. Ron Atkinson and Rodney Marsh lost jobs for less.

@Andrew What are you rambling about? Did you even read the article?Ron Atkinson racially abused someone on live TV. Rodney Marsh took the piss out of 250,000 dead tsunami victims on live TV. While Braziers’ actions were stupid, it was a rush of blood to the head and it is quite clear he deeply regrets it. Get over yourself.

I did read the article. What he is saying has nothing to do with Sky News ‘values’ (though I am not sure that is the right word, but anyway).

What is more interesting, and he doesn’t address the issue, is that what he did was consistent with Sky News’ approach to the creation and development of ‘stories.’ His action reflects an agenda and attitude to situations that would be familiar to any Sky News viewers (and I do watch it myself). This approach ,as we saw with tabloid newspapers, is becoming standard media practice.

However, if you want to watch reporters rifling through personal belongings at crash sites at least you have the consolation that you won’t be left wanting in that regard

He seems like a decent enough fella from what I’ve seen of him over the last couple of years – poor judgement for sure but doesn’t deserve all this bad press. As for Kay Burley running around Schiphol after bereaved families and harassing the Dutch PM in Utrecht yesterday – absolutely reprehensible.

I can’t stand the women, she is full of her own self importance but Colin Brazier is top notch Journalist who to my recollection, doesn’t cross the line when reporting a story. It was an error of judgement and he’s apologized it’s time to move on.

It was a rather stupid mistake he made, for sure. But it’s fairly clear that what he’s explained is true.

He clearly realised what he did was wrong as soon as it happened and he’s apologised. I think that’s fair.

Most of the reaction seems to be rather vacant of fact – Boo bad SKY News reporter was rummaging though crash victim’s luggage. That’s clearly not the extent of what happened. People need to calm down.

It’s a set up to try force a war with Russia? Some passports in good condition have turned up. That’s all it takes for you to claim a hoax? What about the hundreds of families, the hundreds of people we have seen in Amsterdam airport in deep shock and mourning, all these people are in on the hoax too are they? They didn’t really lose loved ones?

    Frank,

    1. Pristine passports, meh I don’t really think you have a basis for saying that they should be damaged etc.

    2. Carrying expired passports is a relatively common practice, for a number of reasons such as going somewhere abroad and not wanting to have to carry your actual passport if you’re “carded”, having a valid visa stamped into the expired passport (which would still be valid) or alternatively, just keeping them all in the same bag out of habit.

You’re (as usual) presenting zero evidence, yet putting your own unique spin on things and attempting and failing to sell it as fact.

Yes, Frank, I can. As I have done on previous threads over the past few days. But when you come up against a valid explanation that doesn’t fit with your version of events, you ignore it and skip along.

The plane came apart in the air. The huge burn area is where the engines and fuel tanks landed. There are many other locations across a 10k area with parts and contents of the plane that fell without burning, including passports and luggage. How is that so hard to grasp?

People are very protective of their passports (they often only use or handle them when they travel). They keep them safely with travel docs and the like, sometimes in folders, or in hand baggage. These passports were gathered up (illegally) from the ground or from the personal belongings of passengers by those looting and interfering with the crash site. If you travelled enough, Frank, you would actually know that for protective reasons people don’t destroy their out of date passport, and sometimes still carry them along with a newly issued one in a personal travel pouch. Yeh, pretty weird, but there you go, Frank. I’ve witnessed this at many airports.

Countries are also moving away from passport visa stamps (vista stamps mentioned in your linked article), instead choosing to issue paper or electronic visas, especially for European citizens. The vast majority of passengers on MH17 were holiday makers, maybe travelling once or twice a year.
