Jeremy Corbyn urges parties to make him caretaker PM to defeat no-deal Brexit

Corbyn has called on opposition leaders to support a Labour caretaker government.

UK LABOUR PARTY leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on opposition party leaders to install him as caretaker Prime Minister to avoid a no-deal Brexit.

In a letter to rebel Tory MPs and party leaders, Corbyn proposed ousting Boris Johnson as PM through a no-confidence vote, allowing Labour to form a caretaker government until a general election is called.

Outlining his plan, Corbyn said his caretaker government would be “strictly time-limited”.

Liberal Democrats leader Jo Swinson quickly shot down Corbyn’s plan, however, describing it as “nonsense.

“Jeremy Corbyn is not the person who is going to be able to build an even temporary majority in the House of Commons for this task – I would expect there are people in his own party and indeed the necessary Conservative backbenchers who would be unwilling to support him.

“It is nonsense,” she said.

The UK is due to leave the European Union by Halloween.

With Boris Johnson three weeks into the top job, the EU has stood firm against re-opening negotiations with the British government, rejecting Downing Street’s calls to drop the Irish backstop.

This tension is setting the UK on a course to crash out of the EU on 31 October with no deal.

In his letter, Corbyn wrote: “This government has no mandate for no deal, and the 2016 EU referendum provided no mandate for no deal.

“I therefore intend to table a vote of no confidence at the earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success.

“Following a successful vote of no confidence in the government, I would then, as leader of the opposition, seek the confidence of the House for a strictly time-limited temporary government with the aim of calling a general election, and securing the necessary extension of article 50 to do so.”

Corbyn has been a terrible leader for labour, a gift for the Tories. The original vote was close (52-48%) and he could have set Labour up as a proper opposition party supporting staying in the EU. Instead he dithered and took no position leaving Labour criticising the deal but having no alternative.

@lambda sensor: not sure if the leader of the opposition could take up a position defying the will of the people – whether we like it or not the Leave side won the referendum. But he most certainly could have taken a position of whatever deal was negotiated be put to the people in a second referendum.

@lambda sensor: how could he support staying in the EU when it was Labour strongholds in the North of England that voted most heavily to Leave.

Personally I think they took the most logical position they were left with after the referendum, and that sadly was to sit on the fence.

Also, they had a good 2017 GE and their manifesto stated they would honour the result of the referendum.

@offtheball: one of the reasons the referendum passed in the first place was Corbyn’s lack of campaigning and overall unwillingness to strongly back remain. There’s historic reasons why old hard left wingers don’t trust a capitalist collective like the EU but Corbyn’s attitude was just one more part of the perfect storm of stupidity that is Brexit.

@lambda sensor: on the contrary Corbyn is the only real socialist leader the Labour Party has had in a very long time.Blair (a war criminal)totally betrayed Labour Party principles, and left the working class without a voice.the parliamentary party (champagne socialists) tried to oust him and got their answer from the grassroots.Corbyn is no lover of the EU.,a very flawed entity, but is pragmatic enough to recognize that you dont change anything by jumping in to the abyss that is a no deal brexit. The problem little Englanders like Boris the buffoon, and Reece-omg.have is that Britain is not the epicenter of Europe but an ordinary member. The danger is that by venting their spleens on Europe they are leading the people of Britain down a very dark road.

@Maurice: it’s actually pretty common for referendums to be supported across the political spectrum. The Irish example alone shows general backing for abortion, same sex marriage, and assorted European issues. Its actually funny when you consider that a referendum designed to stamp out dissent among tories actually ended up dividing the entire country.

@Thomas Devlin: Corbyn is anything but pragmatic. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, privately educated yet a shoddy performer, has defied no confidence votes from his own party, has made Labour a party of middle class yuppies while the traditional working class have now left them for the right, and surrounds himself with cronies rather than with a proper qualified shadow cabinet that can take it to the Tories. Part of the reason the Tories are still in power is nobody views Labour as a better alternative. If only the LibDems had a chance.

Labour’s swing to the left is what made the Leave vote possible. It started with Ed Miliband defeating (or knifing as some say) his centrist brother David. David Miliband might not have won the 2015 election, but parliament would likely have hung, so no Tory majority and no referendum.

Then Labour just made it worse by swinging to the left even more with Corbyn, a eurosceptic himself.

I understand the anti-Blair dynamics in bringing about this state of affairs, regardless of its rationality, but Labour under Corbyn won’t fly, and neither will this Corbyn plan. And once it’s failed, no-deal Brexit edges even closer.

Why does Corbyn even want to be caretaker Prime Minister. He should pick an underlying to put forward. This gives him credit with the majority remain labour members who will see him putting their needs first. The leave labour members won’t directly blame him for it and getting the Tory party to split to form a short term unity government dooms them to a split vote with the brexit party and should make a labour lead government a strong likely hood. Rigging his heals in to be PM for only a few weeks would seek to confirm the “dear leader” mentality his critics accuse him of.
