'The hottest five-year period on record': The findings of a stark new climate report

It comes ahead of a major UN climate summit tomorrow that will be attended by more than 60 world leaders.

UISTGC1

THE WORLD IS falling badly behind in the race to avert climate disaster as a result of runaway warming, with the five-year period ending 2019 set to be the hottest ever, a new and damning United Nations report published today said.

It comes ahead of a major UN climate summit tomorrow that will be attended by more than 60 world leaders, as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pushes for countries to increase their greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The report “highlights the urgent need for the development of concrete actions that halt global warming and the worst effects of climate change,” said its authors, the Science Advisory Group to the summit.

Average global temperature between 2015-2019 is on track to be the hottest of any five-year period on record, according to the report, which was compiled by the World Meteorological Organization.

euronews (in English) / YouTube

The period “is currently estimated to be 1.1 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial (1850-1900) times and 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than 2011-2015,” it said.

The past four years were already the hottest since record-keeping began in 1850.

Guterres said last week the world was “losing the race” on climate change, with the latest report spelling out the extent to which the gap between what is required and what is happening is widening.

Rather than falling, carbon dioxide grew two percent in 2018, reaching a record high of 37 billion tonnes.

More importantly, there is also no sign yet of reaching what is known as “peak emissions,” the point at which levels will start to fall, though these are not growing at the same rate as the global economy.

The 2015 Paris Agreement saw countries lay out national targets to reduce their emissions in order to limit long term temperature rise by either 2 degrees Celsius or 1.5 degrees Celsius.

These are benchmarks that will limit in important ways the impact of warming on world weather systems.

UnitedInScienceKeyMessageCircle The main findings of the report.

But even if all countries meet the goals they set themselves, the world will warm by 2.9 degrees Celsius to 3.4 degrees Celsius, the report found.

The current levels of ambition would need to be tripled to meet the 2 degrees Celsius goal and increased five-fold to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal — technically still possible.

“This reads like a credit card statement after a 5-year long spending binge,” said Professor Dave Reay, chair in Carbon Management at the University of Edinburgh.

“Our global carbon credit is maxed out,” he added.

If emissions don’t start falling there will be hell to pay.

In 2018, global carbon dioxide was 407.8 parts per million (ppm), 2.2 ppm higher than 2017 and set to reach or exceed 410 ppm by 2019.

“The last time Earth’s atmosphere contained 400 parts per million CO 2 was about 3-5 million years ago,” the report said.

At that time, global mean surface temperatures were 2-3 degrees Celsius warmer, ice sheets at both poles had melted, and seas were 10 to 20 meters higher.

UISTGC3

Other major takeaways include that the extent of Arctic summer sea ice has declined at a rate of 12 percent per decade over the past 40 years, with the four lowest values between 2015 and 2019.

Overall, the amount of ice lost from the Antarctic ice sheet increased by a factor of six each year between 1979 and 2017, while glacier loss for 2015-19 is also the highest for any five-year period on record.

Sea-level rise is also accelerating as is the process of acidification, with an increase in 26 percent in acidity today compared to pre-industrial periods, as a result of absorbing increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The report also found that heatwaves were the deadliest weather hazard in the 2015-19 period, affecting all continents and setting new national temperature records.

The summer of 2019, which included the hottest ever month on record (July), saw unprecedented wildfires in the Arctic.

In June, these were responsible for emitting 50 megatons of carbon dioxide.

The report also comes at a time of increasing mobilisation over the question of climate change, with millions taking part in a youth-led global strike on Friday, before the first UN youth climate summit yesterday.

    @5hbeZh0I: absolutely fake news.

Climate datasets are regularly distorted and need to be independently audited. Checkout NASA GISS: Biases due to Urban Heat Islands and homogenisation algorithms between versions 3 & 4 for temperature records show the past has been cooled to make the present look warmer. See Valentina as a prime example: https://notrickszone.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Valentia-Observatory-Ireland-v3-v4-%E5%8B%95%E7%94%BB.gif

The aggregate effect is that the temperature anomaly looks all the more dramatic due to “adjustments”.

The HadCRUT4 dataset is also beset by the inclusion of erroneous data, inappropriate procedures, poor data processing and guess work: https://robert-boyle-publishing.com/product/audit-of-the-hadcrut4-global-temperature-dataset-mclean-2018/

@Rob Porter: There is no “baseline” Rob. There doesn’t have to be one. An airplane flys at the same ALTITUDE irrespective if whether it’s ‘height’ is measured above mean sea level (AMSL) or height above the airport it took off from.
It doesn’t matter what you take as a baseline temperature, the outcome is the same. It is reasonable to take a pre-industrial average over the previous 1,000 to 10,000 years. The important thing to note is that the last 5 years have been the hottest recorded in the last 10,000 and it’s known for sure to be caused by man-made CO2 present in the atmosphere What’s your point though?

@Thomas: Wrong! Solar variability measurements show that mean solar energy has been falling off since the 1960s due to the natural solar cycle as predicted. The global mean temperature no longer tracks incident solar energy because the greenhouse effect is now so strong. This nice graph from the good folks at NASA illustrates this point very clearly, since you are otherwise experiencing difficulty interpreting facts.

The heatwaves were caused by energy from the sun being TRAPPED by CO2.
The Journal didn’t just draw a graph, the sources for the data shown are printed on it. And as I already explained, an airplane at an altitude of 5,000 meters is at 5,000 meters no matter the baseline HEIGHT taken. You are drawing attention to the baseline because of its potential to confuse. It’s irrelevant. The temperatures measured are the same regardless.

@Thomas: No Thomas. Not thick at all. In fact I’ve been a member of Mensa since 1992 :) Also I’ve been studying climate change science since I first began reading science journals in the early 90s while in college and ever since. The theoretical work been done on the greenhouse effect was snowballing around then. Obviously the temperature record was missing the several decades to date which we now have, so it was anybody’s guess back then (non-scientists that is) whether the global average temperature would rise as predicted by those scientists in the field of climatology. But the Science was ironclad. Roll on almost 30 years and we have witnessed the predicted temperature rise first hand. Not only that, but the temperature rise has alarmed even those making the predictions because as we are finding out that there are other factors that exacerbate the climate crisis such as storm strength methane release etc. I studied Meteorology and sat my exams in exams in October 2001.

@Jack Creegan: sea level rise is not uniform. Ask the Maldives who have lost several islands and have had to build a great big wall around their capital. Ask Kiribati who also lost several islands in the last 10 years. Ask the Russians about Perlamutrovy Island. You need to check your facts before asking others to check theirs. There are multiple factors involved in increased sea levels, including salinity, atmospheric pressure, isostatic rebound, etc. It’s not simply a case of measuring at one small point in one small tidal river on one small island, ignoring geologic, atmospheric and other processes and then declaring it as the standard, that you alone are correct and pretty much the entire scientific community along with NASA are wrong.

@Jack Creegan: Ireland is experiencing post-glacial rebound, off-setting sea level rise.

During the last Ice Age massive Ice Sheets, some 1 to 2 km thick sat over Ireland, they pressed down on the crust, depressing the crust downwards. After ice sheets melted 12,000 years ago, that massive weight was removed and as a result Ireland’s crust has been rising upwards since. This is called post-glacial rebound.

Post-glacial rebound has off-set most of the recent sea level rise for Ireland. That is why sea level in Dublin has been relatively stable for the last 100 years or so.

Ireland is rising almost as fast as the sea is rising.

This effect is even more extreme in Scandinavia, in the Baltic, where the land rising much faster than sea level rise, the land there has risen several feet in the last few hundred years. That is because the ice sheets were thickest there.

Names and dates all the historical newspaper reports of droughts, heat waves, snow and ice storms with all the measurements taken at the time, and data from ice core samples. He showed a newspaper report from the new York times in the 30s about record heat wave that lasted 3 months with temperatures hitting 121F plus, and then one recently saying record temperatures not seen since the 1950s, contradicting themselves not realising what was reported back then or just knew people would just believe what they have written because the people who witnessed it are no longer here. He show alot more newspaper reports from alot of different newspapers. He showed how the trend bar is manipulated to show what they want you to see plus hidden data thats just overlooked. picking a start date on a graph when it can be turned on a upward trajectory for temperatures, forest fires and a downward for ice. He showed a graph from the US forestry service showing burn acreage in the 1930s was way more than today but they started the graph a the recent lowest point to give the impression the forest fires were out of control. Plus the guy that started of this nonsense Michael manns hockey stick graph has been rejected because he wouldn’t produce his work in the recent court case, he lost the case and has to pay all expenses. Its starting to unravel.

As I told you before the big ball of plasma in the centre of our solar system is responsible. Dear God, if you can’t even read a short comment without getting that completely wrong, what hope have you for a fossil industry-supported article hosted on conspiracy-theory site researchgate? As for “the extra 3% of carbon we put up promotes plant growth”, well that’s just not true. Plants rely on the carbon isotope 12C in preference to 13C. We are pumping out 13C and 14C. In addition to the wrong isotopes, increased carbon in plants, particularly those animals and humans eat, leads to carbon toxicity, causing acidification of the plant as well as sterilisation.
