Tear gas and bricks: Renewed clashes as Hong Kong marks five years since Umbrella protests

Tens of thousands crammed into a park outside the city’s parliament this afternoon.

RENEWED CLASHES HAVE broken out in Hong Kong as police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse hardcore protesters hurling Molotovs and bricks after tens of thousands rallied peacefully in a nearby park.

Huge crowds had gathered to mark the fifth anniversary of the Umbrella Movement, the failed pro-democracy campaign that laid the groundwork for the massive protests currently engulfing the finance hub.

Tens of thousands crammed into a park outside the city’s parliament, the same site that was the epicentre of the 2014 protests.

But smaller crowds took over a main road opposite the building with groups of hardcore activists in masks throwing bricks and petrol bombs at the nearby Central Government Offices.

Police responded with water cannon laced with pepper solution and tear gas volleys, though the crowds soon dispersed at the sight of riot police.

The scenes were reminiscent of the Umbrella Movement, which exploded when huge crowds came out after police fired tear gas at a student-led rally which had taken over the same highway – and was named after the ubiquitous tool people used to defend themselves from police.

Both 2014′s protests and the current demonstrations were fuelled by fears that Beijing is eroding freedoms in the semi-autonomous Chinese city and frustrations over the lack of direct elections. But the character of the protests has noticeably hardened in the intervening years.

Compared to the current strife – where street battles have erupted for 16 consecutive weeks – 2014′s protests were famous for students completing classwork in the camps, recycling their waste, and the police largely avoiding direct conflict during the 79-day occupation.

This summer’s pro-democracy protests have had a distinctly more existential feel, with clashes growing in intensity and Beijing issuing increasingly shrill warnings.

Many of those attending today’s rally defended the use of violence by more hardcore activists and spoke wistfully about the more festive atmosphere that characterised the Umbrella Movement.

But they said Beijing’s refusal to grant democracy – coupled with the ongoing erosion of freedoms – had hardened their resolve.

The Umbrella Movement introduced a whole new generation of Hong Kongers to direct action.

Earlier today, Joshua Wong, a prominent former student leader who served a short jail sentence for his role in organising the 2014 protests, announced that he would stand in upcoming district council elections.

He recently returned from the US where he testified before a Congressional committee about eroding freedoms in Hong Kong, infuriating Beijing.

China’s birthday

This summer’s protests were ignited by a now-scrapped plan to allow extraditions to the authoritarian mainland.

But they have snowballed into a wider movement calling for democratic rights and police accountability after Beijing and the city’s leader Carrie Lam took a hard line.

Activists are planning to ramp up their protests in the coming days.

Beijing is preparing a huge military parade on Tuesday to mark 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, revelling in its transformation into a global superpower.

However, democracy protesters are determined to take the shine off the festivities, with many shouting “save your energy!” today as they changed clothes and dispersed.

Rallies are planned for tomorrow to mark a Global Anti-Totalitarianism Day.

Students are planning a class boycott on Monday while online message boards – used to organise the largely leaderless protests – have filled with calls to disrupt celebrations of the People’s Republic’s 70th anniversary.

Among the demands being made by protesters is an independent inquiry into the police, an amnesty for the 1,500 people arrested, and universal suffrage.

But Beijing and local leader Carrie Lam have repeatedly dismissed those demands. Earlier this week a top Chinese envoy in the city described them as “political blackmail”.

What will happen? It will be easier to pay off, not that we should be paying it in the first place. What happens when our levels of pay get cut to lower levels such as Spain? As an example 1 million euro in Spain will buy you a lot more than it would here, now think when we start taking in less tax and our levels of income are greatly reduced how are we going to pay back these billions of euro. Angie must not of thought this whole austerity thing through, or maybe she has…

Just in case you missed the latest debacle heres a brief reminder.
I noticed you stayed well away from this headline a few days ago

The Washington-based fund has said a ‘downside scenario’ where banks are unable to return to profitability and have to keep writing off more and more loans, combined with looses NAMA could make in the winding-down of IBRC, could force Ireland to offer yet another bailout for its banks.

The writing is on the wall dildo pity its taken you six months to realise it but then again your one of endas men what can one expect

John- you’re the one crying about every cut & every tax. I didn’t need Washington to tell me we were in trouble. How many times have I pointed out we’re bankrupt? Does the phrase “We. Have. No. Money” ring any bells? No? Probably because you were too busy dismissing it, telling me that we shouldn’t be increasing taxes or making cuts? Throwing money we don’t have at the poor civil servants you would be. So who was in denial, Jonny boy? My point has always been that we’re making slow, steady progress- which is something the IMF also acknowledged while warning that considerable hurdles lie ahead. The IMF warning was a ringing endorsement of Government policy. But the best endorsement of all will be when we’re the first country out of the bailout by years end- no thanks to people like you and in stark contrast to your dire predictions of a second bailout.

Just to add to what you’ve said John, keeping the banks like AIB & BoI propped up also means that ordinary citizens will pay/cover these gambling losses whether it’s public money injected straight in or thru’ profit gouging banks’ customers into the future. The macro economic effect is much the same.

There is, & was, no need for any of these losses to be met by present or future earnings of society. Indeed, the very act of collective austerity in order to do so removes spending from the economy & destroys jobs & the ability to pay.

IF the issue is/was ‘systemic’ stability in keeping these gambling dens alive*, the ECB, arguably knowing & responsible for Eurozone banking even before the crisis, as +issuer+ of the Euro (from thin air, gratis) could, & still can, be obliged to step in & finance the lot, without borrowing, or ‘cost’ to anyone. There is no ‘inflation’ implication in this. That’s already happened in inflated land/property prices – the money’s gone.

(* instead of simply declaring them bust, then reopening the doors under new ownership)

We now have mass unemployment (& still rising). The chucking of peoples’ money into a skip & torching it – preventing it being spent, increasing aggregate demand & job creation – is about the most stupid thing we could be doing. Precisely the +opposite+ of what is needed. As all worked out by Keynes when he pointed out that the +macro+ economy was not like some f&%ing grocer’s shop in Grantham. Principles that all economists except the most extreme fascist zealots accepted as macro economic reality for decades afterwards.

In the Eurozone, even the incompetent & greedy elites of the political classes have eventually worked out that stability requires a (currency issuing) Central Bank to take responsibility for, & ‘backstop’, the banking system. Non-currency issuing Governments cannot do this (well…duh!…that’s why we got Central Banks in the first f&%$ing place…). It is only when the ECB head Draghi said ‘…we’ll do what it takes…’ etc. that an imminent collapse of various Euro countries & then the currency itself was prevented (last year).

But only FOR NOW. It ain’t fixed….as all that has been agreed (if you could call it that) is some vague ‘banking union’ (read= actually having the ECB mandated as a proper Central Bank) together with another vague principle of ‘decoupling’ of (non currency issuing, remember) governments’ debt from the Pyramid schemer bankers & their mates.

Let’s just emphasise the VAGUE bit here from these incompetent, greedy, self-interested elite @ssholes….. why?

Well, whatever credibility they had that they actually +meant+ to follow thru’ with a ‘banking union’ & ‘decoupling’ has just been F&*%ed into the Med in their ‘proposals’ to fix Cyprus (another gambling Pyramid scam involving bankers, who’d of thought?). This time they decided to bypass the Government debt/paying (with taxpayers’ money), but went straight to the citizens’ direct to rob their bank accounts! Way to go! Not only are they still draining huge lumps of spending, aggregate demand, job maintaining/creating power, from the Cypriot economy, they have undermined probably 100 years of inviolable principle (deposits shall not be touched!) essential to mass confidence in a banking system….

Meanwhile…..what this ‘..extra 7 years to repay….’ cr@p is really about is an admission that, ‘Oops! we are incompetent clowns, ignorant of +macro+ & monetary economics….sorry, Portugal & Ireland’s bail outs weren’t sustainable….but…..

…..well, you all know the drill by now, don’t you?….these tw@ts, even the ones ‘elected’ (lol) don’t represent your (majority, citizens’) interests….they never have throughout this entire crisis…did they ever beyond a ‘clientilist’ circus?

….yep, it’s another kicking of the can ! The mass unemployment across the entire Eurozone will be continued, whilst the efforts to blame the victims (the jobless) will be stepped up…and we’re talking decades here, unless we citizens get some +macro+ economics cop-on.

Umm…sorry, this was going to be short comment, honest :)

It is unaffordable even if we get the 7 year extension.

The Central Bank of Ireland grossly failed in the performance of is role as prudential supervisor of the banks, the auditing profession turned a blind eye to the reckless over lending by the banks, the developers milked the massive bubble of property values, the FF led governments failed to restrain what was happening but from Ballybrit urged on the madness and the EU failed to curb what was happening with stupidly cheap money and only issued a few gentle advisories. The euro unleashed this harm. The euro is Pandora’s box and created an economy heavily dependent on credit, a house of cards, with the banks standing like a colossus over us all.

Europe created the means of this crisis through cheap and plentiful euros and the responsible parties in Ireland encouraged the madness.

It is facile to blame only Ireland. Yes, our institutions deserve a large part of the blame but it is the euro which is the cause of the later immediate causes.

The reality is that 7 years will not make the cost of the bail out even remotely affordable.

    Games is over, sadly.

But then its hard to recognise such things when you’re consumed by bias and fuelled by a “woe is me” narrative that craves bad news stories and a desire to see the country on its knees.

What I don’t have is a realistic alternative that binds the right of everyone to have a say in who runs the country and the need for those people to be competent. We have to trust that we will learn by our mistakes and vote better going forward. Though when I hear people on here insisting Ireland didn’t put a step wrong throughout the Celtic Tiger I do fear we have learnt nothing.

By voting someone else in only hands over a burning baton.
Complete change of system is needed.

Personally I enjoyed my time during the Celtic Tiger years. I am now paying back a mortgage which was maybe to much for me to handle but that’s my responsibility. I accept that and I will pay what I owe.
But what I will not accept is other people’s debt. This Government had a chance to burn bondholders, which they said they would do and they didn’t. They have landed BILLIONS of other peoples debt and speculation on ordinary citizens who are not able to pay it. Our so called regulators at the time were asleep on the job. Then gets a golden handshake…

    Not really?
That’s fine, try stay away from such glib sanctimonious comments if you can’t or won’t explain… internet anonymity shouldn’t protect you from explaining yourself…or does it?

I know what you’re driving at and I know what the underlying tone of the comment is hence I asked would you care to elaborate, the “poor things” finale was a dead gave away..

If you know what I’m driving at then you need no elaboration. Lame to request that which you don’t need.

But you’ve wasted enough of my time with your frivolous requests and I have better things to be doing.

    Adieu.

I suggest you check the following video out . It gives you an idea as to why the bondholders (unsecured
btw) had to be paid. It all makes so much more sense now. I’m sleeping better at night knowing that these guys are being paid every last cent while here the government are readying their Revenue footsoldiers to go after the young, the old, the sick and the dying and even the dead for the forthcoming Property Tax.

This will give us some breathing space. It could help take the edge off future budgets. Yes, more interest in the longterm. But time to breath now…

It may give us breathing space but the game is up. We have followed the troikas system to little avail. The penny has dropped & they know what we have known a long time. We cant pay & thats the end of it. Plan b please & with substancial debt write down. If not, lots of suffering & more bail outs.

what about banks,, they still have not been bailed out,, they lied on their paper work, and our banks can still go down,, will they do a Cyprus trick ,, wish they would start telling the truth,, wish someone would go in and see the real damage that’s to come,, our government keep making it sound as if we are on the way of trouble while we have only bailed out the German banks on their bad investments in Ireland,, and getting paid back with interest, as i said from day one we should never have paid back, i see Iceland doing well again, Brazil flying and we are getting deeper into debt with interest and banks that are not even close to being solvent,,, reports on aib would be welcome,, as it seems to be getting deeper ,, and as they say they are going to help people with mortgages,, they cant afford to,, and know they will be taking homes back its the only way,, what are our government going to do,, pay for housing for all these people who are going to be homeless,, even if banks take houses sell them for half what they are worth, the home owner has to pay back difference and wont be able to pay rent,, we are so spinning a horrible web for our country,, and they keep saying all is going well, while we have not even started austerity in real,, i know they are going to take money from peoples moneys in bank or new charges or taxes,, when will the truth come out

7 more years to extract our wealth and national assets. These loans are never to be paid back. It is the debt trap. Politicians are incapable of paying back loans and balancing budgets, especially in this country.

What level of write-down is the only deal worth talking about. Only a 32Billion backhander will heal some of the pain Ireland is feeling in its Ass right now. Where’s Kim Jon Kenny when you need him?

I think they should liquidate AIB tomorrow morning and move the good loans to BOI. Why pump more good money into AIB? Rebrand the Branches of AIB to BOI and reemploy the staff.
