Ethiopia's Prime Minister wins Nobel Peace Prize for ending war with Eritrea

The announcement was made this morning.

ETHIOPIAN PRIME MINISTER Abiy Ahmed Ali has been awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel committee announced the prize this morning, saying that it had granted the prestigious prize to Ali for “his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea”.

Ali had been among the favourites to win the prize following his and his government’s work in securing a 2018 peace deal with its neighbour in Eritrea.

Climate action campaigner Greta Thunberg had been the bookies favourite to win the peace prize but misses out on the award for 2019.

The Nobel Committee does not reveal who was nominated for the prize until 50 years after each year’s prize is announced but Thunberg was known to be among this year’s nominees.

Ali’s deal put a formal end to the Ethiopia-Eritrea border war, which erupted in 1998 and left tens of thousands dead before hostilities ended in 2000.

Despite the ending of active violence, a final peace deal remained elusive.

The ensuing cold war stymied development and trade, and undermined regional security, but in a surprise move earlier last year, Abiy began peace overtures, which were welcomed by Eritrea.

Key to this was Abiy’s acceptance in June of a UN-backed court ruling in 2002 demarcating the contested border.

It eventually led to the land border between the two nations opening for the first time in 20 years.

“In close cooperation with Isaias Afwerki, the President of Eritrea, this year’s Peace Laureate Abiy Ahmed quickly worked out the principles of a peace agreement to end the long “no peace, no war” stalemate between Ethiopia and Eritrea,” the Nobel Committee said today.

Sharks are being slaughtered in their thousands every day for shark fin soup, a tasteless and pointless food.
Then every now and again they ‘get’
one of us and we’re horrified…
    Humans are too funny…

It must be a hangover from Jaws. Don’t hippos kill far more people each year and yet each killing doesn’t make the news over here. Of course one could speculate most shark deaths occur in developed countries and as such the victims are seen to be more important than say some lad in central Africa.

Sharks are cold blooded, ruthless killers. I saw a documentary about it some years ago called Jaws. They have it coming to them.

Was in Florida a few years ago, saw a fin in the water about 10 feet away from where i was swimming, no idea what it belonged to but it was big enough for me to scamper out of the water and run 100 yards up the beach.
I felt very silly running when i was out of the water but didn’t stop just incase

Recife beach was just up the coast from an abattoir and offal and blood was flushed into the sea – hence the attacks. But this was in the 1960s I think !

Saw a great documentary on this actually. Very interesting that they attribute the rise in attacks to the dumping of bloods & meats from that abbatoir.

Well actually the Reunion island gets that problem now. Abattoirs are dumping blood and meat directly into the sea, instead of disposing the bodies in the proper way. But French authorities denies that for now. In the meantime a 15 years old girl was cut in two and killed by a shark last week there.

Has anybody considered saying RIP or Condolences to this Irish girls family?? This article is not about sharks. It’s about an 18 year old girl who died tragically. Get real people!! Your comments are far more cold blooded then any shark! Shame.
