Number of births in Ireland continue to decrease as number of deaths increase

In 2018, a total of 61,901 births were registered in Ireland, down from 62,919 the year previous.

THE NUMBER OF births in Ireland have continued to decrease, while the number of deaths have continued to rise.

In 2018, a total of 61,901 births were registered in Ireland, down from 62,919 the year previous.

A total of 32,029 deaths were registered in Ireland last year, up from 31,385 in 2017.

That’s according to the 2018 annual report of the Civil Registration Service, published by Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty today.

In all, over 115,000 life events were registered in Ireland last year.

This includes 21,052 marriages.

Additionally, 81 adoptions and 223 stillbirths were registered during the year.

Here’s a breakdown of the number of registrations recorded between 2015 and 2018 in various categories:

1 Department of Social Protection Department of Social Protection

The number of new entries in the Gender Recognition Register in 2018 was 75.  Two of these related to people who were under 18 years of age.

Meanwhile, just over 405,000 certificates of various types were issued to members of the public during 2018. These are issued when a birth, death or marriage are registered, but also when and requested by a member of the public.

Certificates are also issued to members of the public engaged in research into family histories and building family trees as well as to support legal and other family processes.

“People place great significance in being able to register the life events that impact on their lives and families and for the State, and society more widely, to confer some level of official recognition on these through the registration services,” Doherty said.

“The recording of our life events today means that in years ahead, this vital source of personal history is available for those who come after us.”

But the births still outstrip the deaths by a considerable margin. A bit misleading that headline.

I am of an age when my cohort is passing. My Paternal Grandmother had ten children and my maternal Grandmother had six before her premature death in the 1918 flu epidemic. She was dispensary doctor in Summerhill on Dublin”s North side. The drummer in the rock band I was I. In late 60″s was last of a family of 20. When I visited relatives with some younger members of my immediate family in June I was shocked to hear of so many deaths of people I grew up with. This has started me on writing and recording pieces telling stories of my working class background and my experiences as an emigrant before I pop my clogs. It is an emotional ride with some very funny and also some sad ones. Just like life.

@Ryan: There’s not an agenda to de-populate, that’s a given. Wealthy countries produce less children due to a number of factors like accessible contraception, more independent women who have careers and not having to rely on your children to look after you in old age. If you want to go back to women being nothing but birthing machines chained to the kitchen sink that’s your own problem. If you want to see what depopulation looks like look towards the one-child policy, even at that it wasn’t a depopulation policy but a population stabilisation policy. Keep lapping up the lies of your GO’D though, it’s almost as hilarious as it is dangerous.

What about the numbers for immigration and emigration? And no, I’m not saying that to start an argument like “sure most of them births are prob by non-nationals” I’m just interested to see if that has more of an effect on the number of people in residence on our Ireland than births/deaths!

One million extra people will be living in Ireland by 2040 (according to Agenda 2040), so we’ll be grand! Our African and Muslim friends will surely solve our low birthrate problem, they love popping out the babies like there’s no tomorrow! The Irish feminists certainly won’t be able to help though, they don’t really like having kids and marriage, and of course they ain’t to fond of males in general! They prefer cats.
