Woman raped by stepfather for years says the State failed her

Mary Manning said the abuse began when she was ten-years-old and led to the birth of her five children.

A WOMAN WHO was beaten and raped by her stepfather for years, leading to the birth of her five children, has said the State failed her.

Mary Manning’s mother married her stepfather Sean McDarby when she was ten years old. Appearing on the Late Late Show last night, she told Ryan Tubridy that McDarby began grooming her not long after he moved into the family home.

She suffered physical and sexual abuse for years and first became pregnant when she was 16. By the time she was 22 her stepfather had moved her into what she described as a “house of terror” in Dublin and she had four children under the age of six.

Mary left Ireland for the US in 1987 but returned seven months later, after her children had been taken into care. The abuse by McDarby resumed and she gave birth to a fifth child.

Last night Manning said she had gone to the authorities in 1988 and in 1994 to report the abuse but her stepfather was never prosecuted.

“My country let me down, my country failed me,” she said.

Appearing on the show with two of her daughters, Iseult and Ashley, she explained how she managed to break free from him after she met her husband Karl.

The Late Late Show / YouTube

“He did help me to escape, because that man was still around, that man was still threatening,” she said, adding that she believes her biological father, who died when she was nine-years-old, had sent him to her. “To take care of me.”

She said she only managed to cope with the years of abuse with the support of her husband and her “beautiful daughters”.

Speaking about her father, Iseult told Tubridy “he had control”.

“He came into the house, we were very silent and very afraid, she would lock the door and she would try and get away from him,” she said. “He was just so abusive. We seen her being beaten by him. I think he had no boundaries to the level of sickness that he had in him.”

She said if the State had intervened, McDarby would have gone to prison.

“We want to make sure as much is done as possible. The State had let her down and we would like an independent investigation into why they allowed him to stay on the streets, why they allowed him to have the opportunity to come to us and attack us if he felt necessary.”

When asked how she felt when her abuser died, Mary said it was “such a mixture”.

“It was like, he destroyed so many lives and has impacted so many lives. The really difficult piece is, while I absolutely love my children, he took away my ability to be a mother, he took away so much,” she said.

“There would be times when I see a resemblance, it’s difficult.”

Or you could look at it this way…..bin charges are the cheapest they’ve been for years for many. USC is dropping next year. Property tax is dropping next year (for many). Interest rates on mortgages are the lowest they’ve been for generations. More people are in employment.

I’m a glass half full kind of guy!

I have sympathy for tenants though and the double digit inflation many are seeing in rents. That is wrong.

Michael, they’ve heard the news of ‘jobs announced’, it helps the masters take the heat off the ‘wage issue’. these jobs won’t cut it, the wage increase will. they’ll keep going, theres many coming in here to take the min.wage but they’ll feel the pain in Ireland and that its not all rosey when the bills come through the door, then they start cribbing. We see that at the frontline with doctors and nurses. In for the honeymoon, then demands start and thats obvious. Don’t forget fuel charges up, everything has gone up, i’d say at least 3-4 times in 8 years. Food? same. Lidl, once great, not so cheap now is it? Compare their prices to 2007 and you’ll see. ESB has increased 3 times. Bus fares x 3 times at least. Take but no give, give job alright but thats just a name, whats the wage? Competition for jobs has increased ten fold in 5 years. Is that a good thing? It is for the employer, not you. Its not a good thing. Ask the emigrants.

and working for less, much less but we won’t take that in to account. they’re all desperate at this stage, the employers are not, they’re creaming it with their price increases. even the scam bridge internships are gold dust = force, pressure from government to take it up. We need more Dunnes Stores news highlighted. Zero hour contracts, many working long hours for nothing extra. Why should they when they’ve got cheaper labour market coming in who are also desperate but tbh the wage here more than compensates for what they’d earn elsewhere, up to 2.5 times. So the attitude seeps in “well if they can survive, so can those here” thats why the economy won’t grow from our spend. they’re not spending it here and we won’t either cos we don’t have it. i am not going to spend €10 more when i can get from UK for less. People need to start doing that and fight back, like how we should have taken all our money from the banks. Collapse it. Make them crawl. Theres no point in thinking what ‘they want’ you to think, buy irish, support the economy. Yea, if they increase the wage and give US the jobs. They’re doing the same thing, theyre importing from abroad, taking anything that is cheaper to work for them. Works both ways. do you think these employers care more in the long term for the economy or short term for their own bank balance?

I’m sure there are rural areas that never felt the benefits of the boom but there are inner city areas in Dublin that never felt them either

Most of my friends are worried about property pricing they have full time employment, they are well into their 30′s, most are well paid but are thinking seriously about emigration. Their concern is that they cannot keep up with rising rent prices and property prices and the 20% deposit is another serious blow to them. Another concern is if they don’t go now they will never be able to have a family or put down proper roots if they stay in Ireland.

The cost and availability of housing is one of the biggest problems governments have failed to address over the last twenty years. There needs to be a limit on rent increases, in line with inflation and only higher increases allowed if the property has been significantly upgrded. More social and affordable housing. Stamp duty lowered for older people who trade down and fee up larger family homes in urban areas. Tax penalties or a “use it or lose it” law for land in urban areas that is sitting derelict. Just a few things that I think would help.

    It’s not rocket science.

Whenever oil prices have dropped and hence energy prices at anytime in our oil based economies it has led to a direct rise in economic activity for oil importing economies. With such high oil price drops our economy should surge.

Next year was going to be good anyway with more people back to work, less taxes hence more money for people to spend and now much lower oil prices, it’ll be a bonanza. Watch support for Sinn Fein and the independents drop as people forget about austerity and start to spend again.

Joseph, the 1% ers is an American term which is quite appropriate in that context given the Republican love of trickle down economics and tax cuts for the very wealthy – the 1%. Indeed the evidence strongly supports the accumulation of wealth amongst a tiny cohort of Americans. Unfortunately for your narrative, the highest earners in Ireland have paid and continue to pay a disproportionate amount of the tax burden, especially since the recession began. That is why Ireland has the most progressive income tax system in the EU (and that incudes Sweden). Progressivity implies that the better off pay proprotionately more of their income in tax. That is the case in Ireland. But, short of expropriation, there is a limit to what people can pay in tax especially at higher incomes. We live in a capitalist economy. Growth is usually uneven, especially when it starts. ICT workers have experienced considerable growth are not 1% ers. Certain sectors are doing better than others. As these sectors thrive other sectors begin to experience growth. Hopefully it will spread widely. Begrudgery achieves nothing except to reinforce envy and jealously. I am delighted to see Ireland growing and hope that in the coming years all will benefit. But it has to start somewhere first.

    Is 5% growth ‘flat lined’?

The standard rate of VAT is on the high side at 23% but for most people their average weekly VAT bill is nowhere near 23%. Many groceries are zero rated. Eating out, cinema etc is 9%. VAT on gas, electricity is 13.5%.

Looking back at VAT, the standard rate was 35% for much of the 1980s and as high as 40% for some items in the late 1970s!

    5% growth for who?

    Test it

Families lost there homes and this is to get worse next year.

Inflation not running with equilibrium with wages

Electricity and gas plus fuel over charged by dirt

    USC has buckled economy

Most people will take home an extra €5 after budget but €3 of this is for water, the €2 might buy a extra loaf . This €5 given back to paye workers is microscopic considering most people wages were attacked by this government on average by €465 a month less to take home.

Interest mortgage rate charged at 4.25% above the EEC bank lending rate of -0.5%

Economy for most people of Ireland outside the government circles and rich 1%. of the population this country remains flat lined.

I normally do our weekly grocery shop in Aldi Lamb, it normally comes to about € 110. Of that €110 there are always a few goodies but the total VAT (it’s on the receipt) is nearly always less than €10 (and ususally much less). The VAT classifications could certainly do with improving and some items that attact 23% shouldn’t but overall it’s not too bad.

i take it they’ve all got pay rises, bonuses for xmas or hope to get it next year? keep hoping. big bills coming next year and the cost of living keeps on rising. found a house yet? can you afford it? best of luck with the pay rise, it ain’t happening. this is a race to lower the wage equally for all EU states. they want it so everyone is equal so it won’t matter which state you’re in. it should be like that ‘for it to work’, but the problem is the cost of living and laws differ greatly. there will be no pay rises and very little affordable housing. the margins will widen. the rich, the poor and all that. can’t be having middle class now at this stage, they don’t like that.

With the high marginal and USC taxation policies favoured by the current Government (USC tax on the people who create businesses and employment was increased in the last Budget), the Irish economy/employment will not improve as much as it is capable of doing and needs to do.

Economy will improve next year if the daft Irish Road Tax is inverted. Save €2 billion leaving our little economy every year due to artificial promotion of new car purchases by Government tax system and would support 20,000 wealth creating jobs.

New Cars – road tax to be increased to €951 per annum.
Older Cars (> 5 yrs) to be reduced to €91.50 per annum.
    (NCT assures reliability and safety)

Those who can afford New Cars can afford to pay the High Annual Road Tax. Those who can’t should not be expected to subsidise them.

Another global crash in 2015, we’re overdue… Russia and Japan are on very shaky ground and Syrza could be running Greece (hopefully) in the new year.
