Moroccan Othmane El Goumri wins this year's Dublin City Marathon

This year marked the 40th edition of the annual race.

MOROCCAN RUNNER OTHMANE El Goumri has won this year’s KBC Dublin City Marathon.

The 27-year-old finished the 26-mile run with a record course time of 2:08:06, and led the pack from around the 20-mile mark.

Belfast runner Stephen Scullion finished second with a time of 2:12:01, while Ethiopian Mengistu Zelalem finished third with a time of 2:12:05.

Ethiopian Motu Gedefa took home the women’s title with a time of 2:27:48, followed in second by her compatriot Mesera Dubiso (2:28:29) and in third by fellow Ethiopian Denbeli Chefo Shuke (2:29:51).

Youghal’s Aoife Cooke was the highest finishing Irish woman, finishing eighth with a time of 2:32:34.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Patrick Monaghan won the wheelchair race with a time of 1:39:46.

More than 22,500 people took part in the race, which started at Fitzwilliam Square at 8.45am.

The race is in its 40th year, and Dublin Lord Mayor Paul McAuliffe presented special medals to 13 runners who have competed in every marathon before this year’s race started.

Traffic diversions are in place around the city this afternoon, and a number of Dublin Bus routes will be diverted until around 6pm this evening.

    @Phillip O’Brien: athletics is a bit different. This isn’t some down on his luck petty criminal. It’s like having a very corrupt country, and then allowing second chances for all the politicians found guilty. Athletics absolutely stinks right now, and easy second chances are the last thing it needs.

    @Phillip O’Brien: he’s taken that accolade and the prize money away from a clean athlete. What incentive is there for cheating to win if you can compete again after 2 years?

    Any chance of running this at nighttime to avoid the hassle of road closures. Impossible to drive around parts of Dublin for the past two days.

    @lelookcoco:
    In fairness nobody is going to listen to that mealy mouthed moan.

    Why don’t you turn an annoyance into an inspiration ffs?. If you can’t change world, change yourself. Get inspired, be more active.

    E.g. If you got a bike, you can easily get around allowed through barriers no problem etc

    @Ardmore02: 1. You don’t need to invest in a bike to stay active. 2. Blocking entire town for a day without a half-decent public transport is wrong. I am sure Permanent TSB and RDS have something to say.

    As a volunteer, I felt for people trying to get to Ideal Homes Expo, RDS so difficult to get to, and would you believe the DART was off ! Full buses everywhere on Sat…..it took me hours to get home. Terrible planning.
