Dublin Bus is looking for a company to carry out drug and alcohol testing of employees

The company will be responsible for carrying out random tests on company workers.

DUBLIN BUS HAS issued a tender for a company to carry out drug and alcohol tests on its employees.

The tender for a three-year contract states that the public transport company is looking for the tests to be carried out all of its facilities.

It specifies 13 different locations, including its garages, medical centre and head office in O’Connell Street where the company requires tests to be carried out, as well as on all roads in the capital and the greater Dublin area.

The company said it wishes to establish a contract which will provide ongoing service at these locations, and that it envisages that the following tests may be carried out:

  • Pre-employment testing;
  • Probable cause testing;
  • Reasonable suspicion testing;
  • Periodic testing;
  • Random testing;
  • Testing on return from treatment;
  • Testing related to transfer or promotion;
  • Voluntary testing.

The successful contractor will carry out laboratory analysis and quality control and assurances, which will have to conform to the European Laboratory Guidelines “for legally defensible workplace drug testing”.

In addition, the company will be required to produce service reports to designated Dublin Bus personnel, and it is intended that there will be an option to extend the contract for two more periods of 12 months.

It is the third time Dublin Bus issued a tender for this type of contract, going back to the company’s introduction of drug and alcohol testing in 2008.

In a statement, the company said its policies ensure that all of its employees are aware of their responsibilities under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.

A spokesman added: “Dublin Bus carries out regular reviews of the policy so the company meets all its duties under health and safety legislation which this current procurement process will ensure.”

    @John Horan: unions are fully behind the introduction of testing, it will only enhance the high safety standard set by unions

    @A -AFC: only things union’s set are pay demands. Unions can’t set s**t in a work place nor do they care. I wish members of unions would look at the unions management and ways they work and how much money is wasted. Unions just screw you a second time, and act all nice about having the pleasure to do so!

    @ThatLJD: you obviously don’t know a thing about unions , every condition from working time act to health and safety through to you sick leave and annual leave have all come from unions looking after workers rights.

    I have to meet one single driver for Dublin Bus who is opposed to the introduction of random testing.

    @A -AFC: I am a driver for Dublin bus and we’re not happy about this. We don’t mind being tested in the depot but not on the road. There’s a few drivers who drink heavily so there going to need help.

    @HONEY BADGER180: I agree they need help but surely that help shouldn’t come from trying to protect their rights over the safety of the public.

    @HONEY BADGER180: drink driver or drug taking is illegal , if you cannot stick to the limits or zero for that matter then maybe the job ain’t for those drivers.

    This has been the norm in Irish Rail for the past 10 years. Why Dublin bus are so lax is beyond me. If nothing else, its a deterrent. And should be implemented by all company’s, big and small, private and semi state. Nothing to do with the unions.
