GARDAÍ IN LOUTH are appealing for witnesses following an attempted ATM robbery this morning.

The alarm was raised to the incident on Main Street in Dunleer at 3.30am.

Officers from Drogheda are attending the scene, where a digger and a lorry had been left.

The scene is currently preserved, and investigations are ongoing, a garda spokesperson told TheJournal.ie.

A significant amount of damage was caused to the premises.

In a statement, Bank of Ireland said it is engaging with gardaí regarding the incident.

A spokesperson added: “The safety of our customers and colleagues is of paramount importance. No one was hurt in the incident, and a full examination of the branch will take place today to assess when it can reopen for business.”

Local Fianna Fáil TD, Declan Breathnach, condemned the raid.

“A continuation of ATM robberies will deprive our towns and villages of such facilities and is not helping in promoting the border region,” he said.

“There is now a real danger small villages and towns will lose their ATM machines, either through services being withdrawn or further raids due to the increase in criminal activity,” Breathnach said.

This is the first such incident of an attempted ATM theft in recent months, after a spate of thefts in the previous 18 months.

Gardaí investigating a separate ATM robbery in Cavan in August recovered over €400,000 as part of its probe.

RTE reported him as a suspect in the disappearance of a man, suspect in possession of stolen property and as being suspected in involvement in the drugs trade.

The independent reported him as being discharged from the force on medical grounds and being found with three cannabis plants (for pain), interviewed about a neighbour who went missing and having come into possession of stolen farm equipment.

Two very different people. Was he a ruthless criminal or a man in pain who lost a friend and got duped into buying dodgy equipment?

Sorry there should actually be a question mark after the word pain. It was my own thought and not part of the independent report.
