Your crash course in... Ireland's place in the TV streaming wars

The entertainment industry is about to be hit with a healthy dose of disruption.

THE CONCEPT OF streamed, on-demand TV has been around for over a decade, but season one of the battle for eyeballs is only just getting started.

Since launching in 2007, Netflix has managed to position itself as the front-runner in the world of binge-worthy entertainment.

Now, a swathe of new services from media giants such as Disney and HBO – as well as tech colossus Apple – are ready to bring a healthy dose of disruption to the industry.

With that in mind, here’s a quick rundown of the streaming wars and what it means for Ireland.

The key players

There are a handful of major competitors in the streaming wars, alongside dozens of smaller players like ad-supported services Pluto TV and Tubi and the curiously named Crunchyroll.

The latest to open curtains is Disney+, which, for now, is only available in the US, Canada and the Netherlands – it’s earmarked to launch in Ireland on 31 March 2020.

At €7 per month, the service has so far attracted over 10 million subscribers with its library of family-friendly content from the house of Mickey Mouse – along with titles like Marvel, Star Wars and The Simpsons, picked up through Disney’s acquisitions.

Apple TV+ went live at the start of November with a limited selection of programming. It costs €4.99 a month and it’s free for a year for anyone who buys a new Apple device. Spoiler alert: that gives you an idea of the main motivation behind the iPhone maker’s move into programming.

Just like Amazon is betting that Prime Video will entice people to spend more on online shopping, Apple hopes its streaming service will help shift more hardware products and bring extra business to its other services.

HBO Max – a far more extensive version of the AT&T-owned network’s existing HBO Now and Go options – has yet to launch, but it appears to be trying the hardest to dethrone Netflix.

The service will be more expensive at $14.99 a month in the States, but it will be investing heavily in content and boast an impressive catalogue featuring HBO hits such as Game of Thrones and The Sopranos alongside the sitcom Friends, the series of Harry Potter films, CNN documentaries and Adult Swim cartoons.

Then there are the incumbents, Hulu, NowTV and Amazon Prime Video. Netflix, which starts with a basic package of €7.99 per month and charges €11.99 for its standard package in Ireland, is the dominant player in terms of subscriptions with some 158 million paying users at the end of September.

The main hurdles

One of the main issues facing streaming providers is the fact that there’s a finite number of subscriptions consumers are willing to pay for – according to Bloomberg, the average punter will sign up for three to five services on top of their broadband bill and that’s it.

It’s not just monetary spending – there’s also a limited number of hours of leisure time that people have to gorge on TV series and films. All of this means the battle to win eyeballs will be fierce.

And delivering binge-worthy programmes doesn’t come cheap. Netflix alone spent $12 billion on programming in 2018, a figure that’s expected to increase this year.

The Economist news magazine recently reported that the entertainment industry spent at least $650 billion on acquisitions and programming over the last five years, roughly the same level of investment as the American oil industry.

It’s likely that as the market evolves, programming costs will decrease – in the meantime, streaming service providers may have to introduce incremental price increases, just as Netflix during the summer “to reflect the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films”.

What it means for Ireland

The rollout of additional services at prices comparatively lower than traditional TV packages is good news for consumers.

For Irish producers, many streaming sites have a dual role as both service providers and content-hungry commissioners – as previously reported by Fora, some industry pundits believe it is cheaper for streaming services to commission a production than acquire one that been a success for another network.

This opens up more potential avenues for film and TV makers to flog their ideas. Some Irish firms have already reaped the benefits.

For example, Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon was commissioned to create a new animated series called My Father’s Dragon for Netflix. Meanwhile, Limerick’s Troy Studios was reportedly chosen as the filming location for Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation.

Yea because that’s all we value people for, what their offspring can do for us….

How about we have our own Irish people playing for their own country, Ireland beat Brazil before, why would we want to import people simply as a short term quick fix solution to any problems we have in this country, why not create the long term solution to our own people sorting out our own problems and being a nation who are the best in the world???

“We had no immigrants for 15centuries” except you multiculters keep telling us we are a nation of immigrants, ye know, vikings, normans, etc.

Btw, we seemed to do exceptionally well for a small country, developing Newgrange when we were even more homogenous, coming up with all those artworks you see in the museum when we were more homogenous, being a nation that reeducated Rome etc, and still providing grade A scientists. writers etc. Not bad for a genepool you like to criticise. In any event, we had enough variety here amongst our own, for natural mutation to allow difference in variation for each future generation. Yet none of you dare say the same about any non-white ethnic group, the hypocrisy from you.

As stated if it were up to me, I would have a nation of Irish people, like any person who loves their own people, and does not hate his own people enough to insult them and want to see them destroyed, enough population which we had, ensures our mutation rate enables negligeable problems with each generation. The hypocrisy and ignorant snobbery from the new pious multicult church congregation is pathetic, you decry the catholic church and what you call fascists, yet you behave exactly the same way as these terms and ideas you sneer at.

Gordon, you miss the point completely, those who built Newgrange were far more homogenous than us. Also they were white. The celts were white and despite the different waves of Celts who came, the populace of this island has remained largely a gaelic (both pre-celtic and celtic peoples) populace, even despite the addition of other WHITES like the Germanic peoples.

You also try to ignore the fact that whites are genetically from the same family tree, more similar and like each other. Also the celts that came in later waves, were also neighbours of germanic peoples, who would have had some level of inter-relations, so even when the Germanic tribes came later, they did not add anything massively different to what we already were.

Trying to compare that with africans and asians coming here, is ridiculous, peoples who are genetically and culturally nothing to do with us.

This is our country, what is the point of having a country if it does not benefit the Irish. I want to see an Irish people, an Irish culture, not something that looks like you will soon see in every corner of the planet, the multicults talk about diversity yet what they support will mean the end of racial and global diversity. Wait till the commenters here realize that ending direct provision of refugees will cost tens of millions after the tax payer has to pay to house them etc!!!

Can natives of colonial countries be expected to believe that their ancestors were displaced because of multculturism? Of course not. But soon enough we’ll be thought that when multicultists have their way.

Bad thing is that so many of them pay high rents in room share. Asked to work long hours as nanny’s. Some people are taking advantage. Then they have to pay huge money to re new their visa. I have lots of Brazilian friends and have heard horror stories.
They do enjoy integrating with the locals and are well up for the craic.
So all i can say is welcome and hope that this country gives you the benefits that you want.

The Brazilians have to quickly learn the Irish way of being friendly and using eye contact though, otherwise there won’t be much integration and the Brazilians and the Irish will largely stick to their own as is currently and unfortunately the case.

As is the etiquette in every country, the onus is on the foreign guests to try to interact and get used to the Irish way of going about this. The Irish, instinctively, will almost always be friendly and try to get to know Brazilians, but the onus will be on the Brazilian guests in Ireland to make a big effort to be friendly and sociable when around Irish people (and particularly to use eye contact when near Irish people), this will encourage the Irish to continue to be friendly and welcoming which is our default position.

…And they say in Brazil is an economic crisis right now. It is hard to believe that, since the Brazilian government is funding thousands of scholarship every year….
Some of them come to Ireland to learn English and yes they have to find a job – but to get to Ireland they need to pay a lot. It is some investment actually. I had a friend who worked as nanny for awhile but she left already because those are just temporary jobs.
Some people here did not really read this article. This big number of Brazilians students is caused by the enormous funding Brazil spend in high education abroad. I see loads – I mean loads – of them around DCU and TCD everyday. They do not have to work, as they are recipient of a fat stipend from their government.
In fairness I think Brazilian people are great, happy and beautiful. I dont see why we shouldnt welcome them here.
