SOME TRAVELLERS IN Galway are living with “sinking” kitchens and toilets, a report claimed.
Some families lack heat and cooking facilities and insulation is minimal or non-existent, the review alleged.
It said windows and doors had to be plugged with sheets and cloth to keep out draughts.
The report said: “On one site the kitchens are sinking.
“On another, the toilet facilities are sinking.
“Gullies are leaking, causing water to flow under houses.
“There are cracks in walls and chimneys and faulty, old radiators are leaking black water across living rooms and bedrooms.
“Parents have to protect children from rats, stagnant water and busy roads too close to the sites.”
The monitoring report was published by the Galway Traveller Movement.
Spokeswoman Joanna Corcoran called for Galway City and County Councils to deliver on commitments to provide for adequate accommodation immediately.
She also urged the speedy establishment of an independent national agency to oversee the planning and development of residential facilities.
According to the City Council, its policy is to consult with them about their needs and to provide, where appropriate, Traveller-specific accommodation.
That includes four permanent caravan parks, one transient halting site and a series of housing schemes.

When wear and tear occurs in my house I pay the appropriate Tradesman. Just got the bathroom done for €2k in the summer. AND…. That €2k was €4k before I paid my paye, usc & tax on it.
Just some of the burdens placed upon normal society not afforded to others. Talk about being prejudiced…. It’s US that are prejudiced against.

As a parent i also have to protect my children from rats, stagnant water ( or as i call them, puddles ) and busy roads. I also teach my kids right from wrong and how to respect other people. I also try to teach them the value of a days work and many other things that you do as a parent.

I also pay to have repair works carried out on my house which i also thought to be the norm but apparently it isn’t.

I wish someone would come to fix my house for free. New roof over kitchen, gutters, bathroom, damp, insulation, gas boiler, fire, rads, painting. Need to get the tarmac in the front done again, send some lads over.
Goin out on a limb here but when I read it I assumed the sheet was there to cover the hole where the window used to be before it was taken out and sold ?
If the kitchens and toilets are stinking, then why can’t the travellers clean them? Genuine question.

I feel for anybody who has to live in poor conditions, but reading this says something to me, why in the name of God would you let the rads leak the black dirty water all over the rooms, fix it, seal up the leak, that does not cost major money , then get the council to fix it correctly, you don’t need to let it drip all over the floor, also windows, if the gap is big enough to stuff sheets, why in the name of God you you not just get some expending foam and seal it, again temporarily, and get council to fix it, there is small thing that can be done to make it a small bit better, as for the council, if the condition of the house is that bad, it should be fixed right a.s.a.p, doesn’t matter where the council property is or who is living in it,

Provide them with training courses on home maintenance. Maybe they could help themselves.
Then go Travel to another country .We don’t want you here causing crime and fly tipping
You could have a top notch Dermot Bannon designed home for these people and they would have it trashed within 12 months . Not a penny more should b spent on traveller accommodation
“Travellers have to protect their children from rats etc…” they also have to protect them from other travellers with machetes as we’ve seen lately Where were the Traveller Movement then.

I don’t that’s the plight of travellers only. Many others have no social housing facilities and many even with social housing are still in poverty.
fix it your bloody selves – thats what the rest of us have to do – homeowners and local authority renters ! just go and get some gear out of the van -someone elses van (and gear that is !!

I’d be more concerned about the gangsters robbing off us by the 100s of millions at a go rather than being filled with hate over someone getting their toilet fixed. When we bring hatred to the traveller or migrant or whoever’s table what response exactly do you expect from these people.
