Ah how lovely. Another commission. Do they really need to go through all that to find out that not enough finance is put towards the DF?
@David Corrigan: exactly we all know they are paid very badly.
@David Corrigan: they did a VFM report a number of years ago. That only made matters worse. The Reserve is only a ghost at the moment. People willingly giving up their free time and had the year end gratuity cut.
Shame that we don’t set up a commission to examine issues like competence, honesty, integrity, empathy and pay scales for the politicians.
12 months, jeeze just another example of kicking the can down the road policy. Put TD’s on the same pay as the average soldier & this review will be done over night.
Quick enough to look after their own salaries and expenses not so quick with the low pay of the army,navy and air corp,kicking the can down the road as per usual.
Surely we should set up a commission to decide if we need to set up a commission? Then again, it’s been a tough year so plenty of hangers on looking to ride the gravy train…
Merge the Slua Muiri & Aer Corp into a marine based single command unit
Put the investment into copter equipped coastal vessels, & abolish that Biggles set up in Baldonnel, which is clearly dysfunctional.
One effective unit instead of 2 bitsy outfits
No expensive consultancy needed other that to settle on the correct vessels.
@William Kelly: so in your opinion, uniquely in Europe, Ireland doesn’t need to be able to defend its airspace.
Hint: helicopters cannot defend airspace.
A squadron or two of f16′s could do the job.
Unless, like re Teefe Ahern, you are happy to leave it to the Biggles boys of the RAF?

@William Kelly: An Slua Muirí has Not existed since 2005. It was replaced by NSR(Naval service reserve), as was An FCA replaced by AR (army Reserve). Both make up what is known as RDF (reserve defence forces).
I guess your knowledge base is why you haven’t been selected to be on the commission. But your point is noted.
@William Kelly: Heli equipped vessels were tried before but NS got pissed off with AC pilots who went home on a Friday.

Only about 50 years late but it’s progress, I suppose.
By the time the commission reports, the report is considered by the minister and approved by government, there will be no army, air corps or naval service personnel left in service
