Jeremy Corbyn says he intends to step down as Labour leader

It was Labour’s worst election result in more than 80 years.

JEREMY CORBYN HAS said that he will not lead Labour in its next general election campaign after the party had its worst result since 1935.

Speaking after his re-election as MP for Islington North at 3.25am this morning, Corbyn said he will stay on until a new leader has been found.

“I want to make it clear that I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign,” he told the gathered audience.

He said that he will work with the party during the transition period.

“I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward. And I will lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future.”

Labour did far worse than expected in the election, with the Conservatives set to secure the party’s biggest victory since Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1987.

Corbyn said it had been a “very disappointing” night for the party, and that Brexit had “overridden so much of a normal political debate”.

“Brexit has so polarised and divided debate within this country… I recognise that it has contributed to the results that the Labour party has received this evening all across this country.”

He also used his speech to attack the media for attacks against the families of politicians, calling them “disgraceful and frankly disgusting”.

Corbyn has been leader of Labour since 2015.  He transformed Labour’s identity from a party of pragmatism to one in favour of radical change as he rode a wave of anti-austerity resentment.

However his support among grassroots supporters was not matched in the wider electorate, or indeed in parts of the Labour party.

Labour’s Brexit stance, in particular, was widely seen as ambiguous, particularly in the face of strong messages from the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties.

@Philip Siggins: Boris would not have a majority in a PR / STV voting system, so it’s not a black or white issue here to say this is democracy in action in it’s purest form.

The problem with Labour is they have no idea what they are and what they want to be. But one things for dang sure – the British general population are smart enough to have nothing to do with Venezuela type socialism.

@Conoroconnor: My point about Thatcher … Conservative policy destroyed the industrial backbone of England…all for privatisation and profit. Johnson and the conservatives have a view of England that is gone forever. Unfortunately working class people seem to share that view also, and it’s the working class that will pay the price.

@Donal Desmond: Comparing the Israeli government to the Nazis is indeed antisemitism. It’s a deliberately egregious comparison. You might acquaint yourself with the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which Labour apparently agreed to adopt (in writing anyway). For further evidence of institutional antisemitism within the Labour party you should also look up the report issued by the Jewish Labour Movement while you’re at it. Its damning stuff, but I doubt you’ll be bothered. Anyway Corbyn got handed his political P45 so that’s a positive.

The reality he has to go now. Trying to lead the party through it’s reflection of what went wrong when he is a major part of what went wrong just isn’t the way to do it. Things won’t be said, changes won’t be made, ideas won’t be floated because he’s still at the top running it.

Labour are 10 years out from power at this stage (this 5 year term and there’s no way Tories will lose an 80+ majority in 5 years time so 2 elections in the minority) – and are already 9 years out of power. It’s a lost generation for Labour. Next time there will be a Labour PM will be 2029. Think about that.

The right wing elements of the Labour party was a major block in the defeat of Corbyn . Like the Irish Labour party that betrayed it’s principles when in colition with the blueshirts. Labour party should stick to the socialist principles on which it was founded. Not a segment of conservatism which it has now become.
