Gardaí are appealling for witnesses of the incident to get in touch.

LAST UPDATE | 15 Dec 2019

A CYCLIST HAS died after colliding with a Luas in Dublin city centre in the early hours of this morning.

The incident took place at Peter Place on Charlemont Bridge at approximately 3am this morning on the southside of the city.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene where the man was pronounced dead.

His body has been removed to the City Morgue in Whitehall.

The Green Line Luas was closed for a time after the incident, but is operating normally again.

The scene of the collision was examined after the incident.

There are late-night Luas services running for certain dates at the moment for the Christmas period.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may be able to assist them with the investigation to contact them at Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any garda station.

So sad. RIP to the cyclist and also devastating for the tram driver as well, something he/she will never get over.

So sad. Feeling for his/her family at this time of the year especially. I hope the Journal closes the comments as we all know it’s going to get nasty (which never happens with a tragedy involving a car driver, passenger, pedestrian, motorcyclist).

@Oisín O’Connor: I was worried it was near trinity where there is a particularly dangerous luas track – cycle lane layout. I do think someone will slip on the tracks and fall under a tram there some day. I don’t cycle the section where this person died but luas tracks are always treacherous for cyclists.

@Oisín O’Connor: Always a tragedy when someone dies in a collision, whether pedestrian, cyclist or driver. They are all mothers, fathers, cones and daughters. Death doesn’t discriminate. RIP that poor cyclist this morning, and sympathies to the tram driver who didn’t foresee this event as he came to work this morning.

@Kárl: agreed. The tram driver was on the late shift with the late night trams for the festive season. Must be terrible for him/her.

Aren’t there any cameras around? Or they just don’t work on Sundays?

    @Joe Bloggs:

It’s supposed to mean the police during the cold weather, and busy festive season in middle of the night, don’t patrol the streets because it’s more convenient to be sitting at the desk, not even during the night just when it gets colder…

Why are they asking for witnesses? Is it too tough to get camera footage, or are the cameras not working, when footage is needed.. (yes speaking from experience)

@Luke13: because they are legally required to gather ALL evidence available. Cameras are limited to the area they are pointing at and most don’t record sound. They will want to know about the driving behaviour of both the cyclist and Luas driver before the incident. CCTV forms one part of evidence as does witness statements, forensic collision investigation, weather reports etc. Try to be a little less cynical.

@Luke13: The gardaí are asking for witnesses because that’s their job, they are supposed to gather all available evidence. If they didn’t, ditch hurlers with chips on their shoulders, like yourself, would be on here moaning about hasty investigations.

@Luke13: if someone close to you was knocked down I’d imagine you would want witnesses spoken to. Or are you saying you would be happy to just have footage looked at? I cant believe your comment.
