Patronage of six new post-primary schools announced, with two going to Educate Together

The six schools are due to open in September 2020.

THE PATRONAGE OF six new post-primary schools has been announced today by Education Minister Joe McHugh.

The six schools are due to open in September 2020. Overall, they will have capacity to cater for 5,000 students when fully developed.

Two of the schools will be run by the non-denominational body Educate Together – in Goatstown with 800 places and Harold’s Cross with 1,000 places.

Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board will be patron for a 1,000-student school in Citywest/Saggart and a 800-student school in Dublin 15.

A 500-student school will be run in Enfield, Co Meath by the Louth and Meath Education and Training Board.

Finally, Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board will be patron for a 800-student school in Wicklow.

department Department of Education Department of Education

The Department of Education has said that it is expected the six schools will be run from temporary accommodation once opened in September 2020 until permanent buildings have been completed.

The patronage process for new schools is overseen by the New Schools Establishment Group. This independent advisory group was set up in 2011 to advise the Minister on the patronage of new schools following its consideration of a report prepared by the Department.

“Parental preference is a key determinant in deciding the patronage of new schools and I’m pleased to say that the views of parents as expressed through the process are reflected in the decisions made on the patronage of these six new schools,” Minister McHugh said.

All new schools welcome but why do we need any more under Church patronage? Also don’t suppose the Dept. will tell us how long these schools will be in temporary accommodation. Would the building preceding or happening concurrently with the school be such a terrible idea?

@gm_cmanning: Which of the above new schools will be under any church? I don’t see any mention of religion at all.

@gm_cmanning: sorry now gm but does it say somewhere that sone of these are under Church patronage? Are they not all ETB or Educate Together patronage, or am I missing something?

@gm_cmanning: Because it makes litigation hard – the Church while owning the building and the ground don’t take the blame – the govt don’t, no it’s the voluntary board of management made of up teachers/parents/ parish priest. It’s totally ridiculous and should not be facilitated.

@Joe Kennedy: I work in an ETB school that’s under church patronage. Not mutually exclusive. These very well be but i doubt it.

@gm_cmanning: ah right, fair enough. ETB school I know of locally here isn’t under Church patronage anyway, so it must depend on the individual school.

@Joe Kennedy: most I’m aware of are under church patronage but obviously not all. Separate issue but don’t get the point of ETBs.

Non denominational schools in Ireland are ILLEGAL. ET are multi denominational not non.

The Harold’s cross school is a bit of a sham in excluding kids from Dublin 12 and 8 despite being a mere 5 min walk from Crumlin proper

Patronage? Could we not have a single national core structure, without dividing up schools like each one is an experiment? There’s much to be said for standardisation (with religious oversight).

Our said minister can’t even get the primary school in Mullingar open, it’s just missed it’s 10th deadline. Enrolment postponed for #Sept 2020! Noting short of disgraceful but this won’t make any headlines
