Drugs worth €59,000 seized at Portlaoise Mail Centre

The illegal drugs were concealed in parcels originating in Ethiopia

REVENUE OFFICERS AT the An Post Portlaoise Mail Centre have seized approximately 118kg of khat with an estimated street value of €59,000, as a result of routine profiling.

The illegal drugs were concealed in parcels originating in Ethiopia which had no declared contents and were destined for various addresses in Dublin.

Khat is a stimulant with similar effects to amphetamine. It comes from a leafy green plant of the same name.

Investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.

These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing work targeting drug smuggling and shadow economy activity.

If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling they have been advised to contact Revenue in confidence on the freephone number 1800 295 295.

According to the World Health Organization, the effects of khat consumption are similar to strong coffee. Total joke it is classified as an illegal drug. But hey gotta keep those numbers up.

@Brian Henoll: Served in Somalia in 1993 and seen first hand the effects of Khat , fighters during the civil war were strung out on it, eyes rolling in their head, please don’t compare this to strong coffee

@Matt McNamara: I very much doubt that it was Khat.
“eyes rolling in their head”. Show me a single study that shows those side-effects and I’ll eat my hat.
Everywhere its being described as a mild stimulant. Mild. Not causing rolling eyes. But hey lets ban coffee while we are at it as well!

Khat is a mix of everything you can buy off the shelf in a pharmacy! Very popular in Africa as you don’t need a prescription to buy in bulk… 59,000€?? Ryan Air obviously charged extra for the oversized bag and a window seat

If they made it legal then there wouldn’t be as many drug dealers because you could just grow it yourself and also there would be less crime
