Gilmore to discuss Syria, Egypt and Iran with other EU foreign ministers

Foreign ministers from across Europe are holding their monthly meeting in Luxembourg today.

EAMON GILMORE WILL discuss the deteriorating situation in Syria and yesterday’s presidential election in Egypt when he meets other EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg today.

The ministers are expected to reinforce sanctions against Bashar Assad’s regime in Syria in protest at the escalating security and humanitarian crisis. They will also review the EU’s approach to the crisis after the UN was forced to suspend its observer mission last week after the violence intensified.

The European Union has been criticised for its slow and ineffective response to the crisis in Syria.

The 27 ministers will also discuss political progress in Bosnia-Herzegovina when they hold their monthly meeting today, as well as negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme.

While in Luzembourg, the Tánaiste will hold a bilateral meeting with the Luxembourg foreign minister Jean Asselborn and launch the newly-established Luxembourg-Ireland Chamber of Commerce.

He won’t be discussing anything, he will be sitting in quietly, nodding is head in agreement to everything that’s discussed!

I think you’re being a bit harsh in Gilmore, he doesn’t have a tendency to sit there mouth-closed and silent, he does comment on international affairs and has been quite critical of Israel’s settlement policy.

I would agree with that sentiment, he is certainly not the worse Minister of Foreign Affairs Ireland has ever had. I do admire his stance on Israel.

If you compare him to the like of William Hague or Hilary Clinton of course he will come across as being less outspoken, but as England and America have substantial military and economic power and are key diplomatic players it stands to reason that comments made by their foreign affairs ministers get more coverage an carry more weight.
