Bernie Sanders.

Bernie Sanders wins New Hampshire primary, narrowly beating Pete Buttigieg

The 78-year-old beat back a strong challenge from Buttigieg last night.

BERNIE SANDERS WON the New Hampshire presidential primary election last night, narrowly edging moderate rival Pete Buttigieg and scoring the first clear victory in the Democratic Party’s 2020 nomination fight.

In his win, the 78-year-old self-described democratic socialist beat back a strong challenge from Buttigieg, a 38-year-old former mayor.

The dueling Democrats represent different generations, see divergent paths to the nomination and embrace conflicting visions of America’s future.

“We are gonna win because we have the agenda that speaks to the needs of working people across this country,” Sanders told supporters .

“This victory here is the beginning of the end for Donald Trump.”

His opponent struck an optimistic tone, saying: “Thanks to you, a campaign that some said shouldn’t be here at all has shown that we are here to stay.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar finished a strong third, giving her campaign an unexpected boost, while Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden posted disappointing fourth and fifth place finishes respectively and were on track to finish with zero delegates from the state.

After a chaotic beginning to primary voting last week in Iowa, Democrats hoped New Hampshire would help give shape to their urgent quest to pick someone to take on US President Donald Trump in November.

At least two candidates dropped out in the wake of weak finishes on Tuesday night: moderate Colorado Senator Michael Bennet and political newcomer Andrew Yang, who attracted a small but loyal following over the past year and was one of just three candidates of colour left in the race.

@Pablo: ah, but we’re not talking about me. We’re talking about a man, an old man, with a known medical history, who is going for a job where his decisions affect hundreds of millions in his own country, not to mention billions around the world.
I don’t think that questioning his physical fitness to do that job for the next four years is a step too far.

@Pateen Johncruck: Well, 68% of americans are satisfied with how the economy is working for them according to a Gallup poll from January 2-15. That’s up from 46% in Jan. 2017 when Trump took office/Obama left, according to Gallup. That’s a 22% improvement. I think the average American strongly disagrees with you.

@Jodi: Sanders for next POTUS and Buttigeig as his vice or the other way around. Both candidates have been consistently performing well. Hope their democratic colleagues will get behind them so american citizens in the swing states will turn from being purple to blue. They’d be brilliant together. And would give the current admin a good shakedown. Bill Maher keeps saying even if Current admin loses, they won’t leave office. In an ideal world, they all wouldnt get a second term. I thought GW Bush wouldn’t and he did. So, I’m hopeful we don’t have to endure another 4 but cautiously optimstic about this victory for Bernie.

@Jimmy Fagan: There is no retirement at 66 in the US. People work, often two or more jobs, well past that age in order to survive and get health insurance through their jobs. Given that the republicans are still trying to eradicate obamacare they will need to continue working until they die as they won’t be able to afford being ill.

I know our own president doesn’t have the same power as our friends across the pond. But MD has been a really good president.
