MET ÉIREANN IS warning people about “very wet and very windy weather over the weekend and into Monday” due to the arrival of Storm Dennis.
It will mark the second storm in a week after Storm Ciara made landfall last weekend.
Met Éireann has published an advisory forecasting the arrival of Storm Dennis in Ireland on Sunday and continuing into Monday, but with high winds creeping in from Saturday.
“Gales are likely in coastal areas on Saturday with fresh to strong winds inland. Winds could increase further on Sunday, possibly becoming stormy, particularly along western coasts. It will be very gusty too over the weekend, with some damaging gusts possible,” it said.
As river levels have already risen, the arrival of Dennis could lead to localised flooding in some parts of the country, particularly in the midlands.
“The combination of high seas and strong winds or perhaps stormy conditions, may increase the possibility of coastal flooding especially along western and southern coasts due to wave transformation,” the forecaster said.
“Storm Dennis may also bring very wet conditions with localised flooding possible. River levels are elevated across much of the midlands so any heavy rainfall would cause issues here.”
Met Éireann has not yet issued any national weather warnings but says that “warnings will be issued on Friday”.

Two Status Yellow marine warnings have also been issued – a gale warning for tonight when southerly winds will reach gale force on Irish coastal waters from Mizen Head to Slyne Head to Fair Head, and a small craft warning as westerly winds will reach force six or higher today.
Mist and fog will form this evening soon after dark, according to Met Éireann. Temperatures are expected to drop to minus one degrees in the north of the country and bring a sharp frost.
Further south, temperatures will fall to between plus one and plus three degrees early on and then rise through the night as southerly winds freshen.
Cloud will increase from the west with rain arriving at the coast there before dawn.
Rain will move quickly in a band from west to east tomorrow morning with sunshine and scattered showers following quickly. Temperatures will be between nine and 11 degrees with strong southerly winds veering southwest and easing later.

@Willie Marty: Personally, I think it’s as long as you are working….but the working poor can get some form of social welfare, as bad as it is. Some of the working middle are entitled to nothing at all. I know of one family that springs to mind where the wife had to leave work to take care of her infirm Mother, but because her husband earns barely over the threshold, she is entitled to niether care’s allowance or dole, regardless of the PRSI contributions made.

I care for my disabled child and my husband got a €20 per week raise, when I let the carers office know about this as I am legally required to, they reduced my payment by €20! Carers allowance should not be means tested on a partners salary. It’s hard and isolating work that saves the state millions and some carers are entitled to nothing.

@Fran Riley: We also let the US ship all the weapons they sell to Israel though our airspace and some stop over in Shannon. All US flights carrying weapons should be refused entry to Irish airspace.
As much as they say only certain things can be done it depends where they put those certain supports. I have not seen much talk of carers or oap allowence going up just universal welfare payments. Middle class again will be left with the bare minimum after all is said and done. Just seen there will or may be allowences for businesses to offset minimum wage increase which is wrong I work for a small business and it is thriving and can well afford to absorb the cost it should be based on net yearly profit. Just don’t get some of the decisions of the gov. They always say you can’t please everyone and they have screwed us middle class for years on budget so how about screwing someone else for once and appease us.

@damien leen: don’t think it’s child birth rate as that’s dropping according to statistics,possibly due to people unable to afford homes to raise them in perhaps?then again that’s probably nonsense there’s hardly a housing crisis going on if there was I’d imagine it’d be taken seriously and an influx of people arriving would at least be slowed down to control it somewhat to meet demand for everyone’s benefit,buts that’s pure nonsense I suppose
