Mastercard announces plans to create 1,500 jobs in Dublin

The company first set up in Ireland in 2008 and employs over 650 people.

MASTERCARD HAS ANNOUNCED plans to create 1,500 jobs in Ireland over the next three to five years.

The company – which first set up in Ireland in 2008 and employs over 650 people – said today that Dublin will become Mastercard’s Technology Hub for Europe from a newly built campus site in Leopardstown, Co Dublin.

Mastercard, which set up Mastercard Labs, its research and development section in 2012, has said it plans to invest in its artificial intelligence, cyber security, blockchain and user experience team as part of this expansion.

Said President of Mastercard Operations and Technology Ed McLaughlin: “Our new campus will help us continue to attract the best and brightest tech talent, so that we stay on the forefront of emerging tech trends and are well positioned to forge the future of digital commerce across the globe.”

The new jobs are being supported by IDA Ireland, which was commended by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at the announcement this morning.

“The 1,500 jobs being created at Mastercard are high quality, skilled positions, which I’m sure will be much sought after,” said Varadkar.

“We can never be complacent when it comes to our economy and employment; as a country we must continue to pursue policies which make Ireland attractive to investment and job creation and open to free trade.”

In a statement today, IDA Chief Executive Martin Shanahan described Mastercard’s expansion as “excellent news” and said it “demonstrates a substantial commitment to Ireland, making it a key location in the company’s global operations.”

@New Remedy: its only great news if they are going to employ locals. If the jobs created mean importing overseas workers, what good is that? More pressure on housing, transport, health and, if workers bring families, education and childcare. And before you get up on your hind legs and shout racist! .. I dont care what colour, creed or nationality the workers are, as long as they have been living here long term already. Existing tech companies should also be obliged to invest heavily in training up locals to do the well paid jobs. It seems incredible that there are still unemployed living in D2 for example, or that drug dealing should be an attractive career choice in D1, when just down the road people in their 20s are legally earning over 100k.

@Joan Murray: should they hire locals regardless of ability? Is that what happens in other developed countries? If a local wants to apply there, the onus is on the local to gain the skills necessary. Once you’re in, a company (any decent company) will help you further your career through education and training, but you have to be able to get the job first – that involves taking personal responsibility.

@windbag: he is right though. Jobs for local people is great but people moving into the city have to be housed somewhere. That said if they are tech jobs as per the article then language skills will probably not be a requirement.

@Joan Murray: I agree with the sentiment of your comment but I disagree that we should put the onus onto the companies to train our young people – we pay high taxes in Ireland and fund a education system – the onus is on our country to train and educated our young people – there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that there are many things in our education system that need to be reformed and brought into the 21st century for sure – but I think it is misguided to point the finger at the corporations -we should ask some hard questions about accountability of the educators and the education system on the numbers and quality of education and training we provide – there was an article here over the weekend about the ‘gender pay gap’ stating the fact that seemingly since 2014 there has not been any noticeable uptake in females for STEM ( science technology engineering and maths ) in ireland – and yet the jobs that pay the 100k salaries require these skills – so perhaps someone can join the dots and start to encourage young women to shift from the abundance of hair beauty and makeup courses that they flock to in abundance and instead more should start considering the STEM subjects – these higher skill positions pay high salaries regardless of gender.

@Craic_a_tower: oh come on. Leopardstown is an easy commute from pretty much anywhere in Dublin. It’s off the M50 by car and has the Luas and plenty of buses. There may be a number of jobs requiring language skills but hopefully they can be recruited from people already here. It won’t be like a lot of big companies that opened here in the last 15 years or so where the majority of positions go to people from other countries.

Even if rent is €2,600 that would leave €1,900 pm for food and clothing, more than enough!
Do you need anything else? Cause once you have a roof over your head can heat and light your home and feed yourself everything else is a luxury.
People do not have a right to go away to the sun every summer, own a car, have a spare bedroom, go out to restaurants.
If you do want the above then I suggest improving your skills and increasing your value!

@Shem: Because the modern world is built on scale, because the people who work for companies of this nature want access to the types of facilities offered by large cities and because there is a large qualified labour pool residing in Dublin and it’s environs that they can dip into. Some people seem stuck in the 1970s and the notion of the IDA advance factory. The world has moved on.

In terms of the need to better plan I entirely agree. But if people in rural Ireland think that their job prospects are going to improve when so many wish to live in one-off houses outside cities, towns and villages they are deluding themselves. Increasingly jobs are going to be concentrated in areas of population. That’s the modern world. If you want the idyllic rural lifestyle there’s a price to be paid.
