Penrose Dock / Vimeo

AN BORD PLEANÁLA has granted permission for a major construction project in Cork city that will see 201 rental apartments built in a development ranging in height from 8 to 24 storeys.

The development will be built on the site of Carey Tool Hire and the former Sextant Bar on Albert Quay.

As well as the homes and amenities for residents such as a library and games room, it is planned that the development will contain a ground floor café and public plaza.

The plan will also see a roof garden created for the residents that will be designed with a 1.6 metre high glazed balustrade to help protect people from the elements.

The apartments in the development will will consist of 93 one-bedroomed units, 104 two-bedroomed units and four three-bedroomed units.

@Mos: its got to do with the fact that in a pub where there’s no food served that people are probably just going for a few scoops and less likely to sit at their own table and leave after the food.
I seen it happen in my own local. Operated like a retaurant the last time, when the restriction lifted people just went to drink and got a bit “looser” with the 6 per table guidelines.
Its nothing specific to do with “food”

@Mos: The only reason the government have got away with this so far is that the Publicans are a very reserved crowd & thought that the government would eventually come to their senses. What is not fair, is keeping pubs closed & opening everything else up & it is not fair on these families & business. There is an element who agree with the pubs been kept closed, but these will be the very same people that will be out mixing with the crowds by shopping, restaurants etc & my experience of this is one particular crowd in my area were reporting people for breaking rules & they all then tested positive, so do as I say, not as I do attitude. Pubs deserve as much chance to open as any other business & the government is treating pubs unfairly, without any proof whatsoever & this needs to stop.

@Mos: I fully agree. I was at the beach in Dublin where outside seating had been removed by cafes but there were lots of people jammed onto statutory park benches eating and drinking. Students in crowds who took up the full width of the walkway bumping into everyone at lunchtime. Either open up or don’t. It’s a joke. My Local doesn’t serve food so my disabled Daughter who’s only in daycare twice weekly because of lack of funding is so sad because she cannot get to the local for her one glass of Guineas&blackcurrent that she’d Usually have twice weekly. There’s no enjoyment for her now. It’s a disgrace.

@Margaret Doyle: I can see how it is very frustrating for you Margaret. There is also the element of public toilets. Councils got rid of public toilets & unless you are in a big shopping center which have toilets there is usually no other place to go. A lot of adults & children that use the local park near me always use our toilet facilities. Last summer they had no place to go. Pubs are been portrayed intentionally by this government as been dirty virus spreaders. They need to get real & stop discriminating.

Absolutely disgraceful the way the pubs and the sector in general is being treated. I personally have no problem go to a bar and having to have something to eat but what about the poor gents and ladies of an older vintage who mightn’t have a huge appetite in their golden years that just want to have a drink and a chinwag with friends? It beggars belief.

NPHET appears to have decided to infantilise large sections of the population particularly those who frequent pubs. They seem to believe that adults aren’t capable of making adult choices. Of course drink lowers inhibitions but that doesn’t mean that everyone who drinks becomes incapable of following established guidelines. The minority who do have a problem in doing so can be dealt with easily by responsible pub owners. I honestly find it odd why NPHET have come down so hard on this sector. No doubt someone will bombard me with statistics about transmission rates and ‘tear me a new one’ as it were but that doesn’t change the fact that the more you treat people like children the more chance there is of them rejecting any future restrictions it might genuinely be necessary to impose.

Instead of all these “leaks” and drip feeding to media can the govt not grow a pair and actually communicate with businesses about their planning instead of leaving them in the dark.
Publicans should have been told ages ago about possible decisions being made.
Surely there should have been an option a,b,c etc put in place depending on what our case numbers are with businesses told of the criteria of opening.
Govt made a big deal about our new system of levels. And now they’re talking about level 3 “enhanced “. Level 5 is the only one where pubs are shut while levels 3 and 4 have them open with severe restrictions.
The govt keeps shifting its position. Repeatedly saying they’re looking at international trends yet we are the only ones with pubs/restaurants continually closing. People have a right to earn a livelihood.

@Kevin50: their profession didn’t cause people to congregate at house parties. They didn’t cause people to congregate at golf dinner galas or retirement parties. You’re blaming pubs for what is a natural human trait. Interesting how you also assume everyone lives with someone. I don’t. I live on my own. Miles from the nearest town.

@Kevin50: a larger menu is not going to stop this from happening! And why should pubs be blamed for their patrons behaviour outside their premises? It’s time to let people take responsibility for themselves. We all know what behaviour is risky and have to make informed choices based on that knowledge. Give publicans a chance to save their business.

Oh for God’s sake, they’re trying to save lives! Enough of the conspiracy/ agenda rubbish please. No such outcry about how services for people with disabilities have been decimated which is causing heartbreak for families.
Lots of businesses have been just as badly affected. My husband hasn’t worked since March. Yes, it’s tough. Yes, it’s awful. But its no one’s fault. It’s the virus, guys! Sick hearing about pubs and their sense of entitlement.

@Ger McDonnell: Not everyone who expresses a view contrary to your own is a conspiracy theorist! I certainly am not. The virus doesn’t make the decisions about how societies react to it’s presence their leaders do. Questioning whether that response is proper and proportionate is allowed and is necessary in properly functioning democratic societies. You’re free to question Government policy about services for people with disabilities. That doesn’t make you a conspiracy theorist. If you don’t ever question you’ll learn nothing…

@Ger McDonnell: I think it’s a perfectly reasonable comment for publicans to express given what’s transpired since March. It reflects what they consider to be their justified anger, frustration and bewilderment at the way they feel they been treated. Hardly a conspiracy theory unless you’ve set the bar (no pun intended!) so low that every opinion you disagree with you now label as a conspiracy theory…

Open the country for feck sake, I’m a restrictions supporter but give everyone December and those who want to get sloshed can, those of us like a pint on occasion can .
Retailers should open Saturday and give them a feckin chance of making a few bob because the alternative isn’t an option, mass unemployment, brexit and a financial collapse that will dwarf the last one.
Most would be happy to be at level 5 for January, and of course protect our older people from the very real threat that the virus poses.
Michael Martin is feckin worse than Mary O Rourke when it comes to decision making , one report or piece of advice away from a decision.
People’s livelihoods matter too, they deserve to earn a wage and have a few days off with family.

What actually is closed is up to the government and noone else.
