The number of people who are homeless has risen to over 10,000 again

6,697 adults and 3,574 children were in emergency accommodation in January.

THE NUMBER OF people who are homeless in Ireland has increased to more than 10,000 again.

Latest figures from the Department of Housing show that there were 10,271 people in emergency accommodation in January.

The figure includes 6,697 adults and 3,574 children, and is a rise of 540 people compared with the previous month.

Homeesl Department of Housing Department of Housing

Figures from the department last month showed that 9,731 people were in emergency accommodation during December, the first time the number had fallen below 10,000 since breaching the five-figure mark last March.

At the time, then-Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy said that the decrease was “a move in the right direction”.

Speaking about this evening’s figures, Dublin city councillor and CEO of Inner City Helping Homeless, Anthony Flynn described the news as “considerably worrying”.

“This is a shocking increase a month after [Eoghan Murphy] claimed a massive reduction,” he said.

The Simon Communities of Ireland described the latest increase as “disappointing”, although it said it was not expected.

“The election showed that the public is very clear that they want the homeless crisis dealt with,” the charity’s spokesman Wayne Stanley said.

“Meeting the electorate’s expectation requires an ambitious Programme for Government that will build a secure and affordable housing system that works for all.”

@John Gill: 12,512 homeless in Northern Ireland. That’s the journal factcheck a few weeks ago on Varadkar claim of nearly 20,000. Put SF in to solve the problem . Doing such a great job up there.
When will people cop on to them and their chicken in every pot politics. Same with health up there and don’t forget the population is only 1.8 million.

Here there were 1m people on combined hospital waiting lists and over 115367 patients on trolleys last year.

Over 700, 000 waiting for specialist medical treatment . No, they are not real patients. We don’t count that way.
    Always an excuse.
Even if we used all 12 categories in the Sth of Ethos typology measurements, which differs across the EU, it would be around the 18,000 mark .Now compare that with Northern Ireland population wise. Republic 4.8 million and 1.8 million in the North .
Using the same metrics population wise , homelessness in the North would be almost 3 times, north of 30,000.
Lets now move on on how you measure population Blah Blah.Snooze zzz.

Just adding in 1 more Category eg women and children in Safe refuges the ‘official ‘homeless figures would be near 16,500 but theres 9 more Categories of ETHOS typology as well!
Since I’ve been commenting here since 2014 and highlighting homeless crisis was developing into National emergency, I haven’t seen you show similar concerns in all that time.My concerns over the ongoing National emergencies in homelessness, housing and health was why I voted the way I did.

Love how the journal use a picture of tents to represent the homeless talked about in this article! There are 10 people listed as living in *other Accommodation Type .As opposed to TEA,PEA or STA(look it up yourselves) They could be tent dwellers or they could be people living with friends or relatives, who knows, but the tents do not represent homelessness and using them is over dramatisation.

It is terrible that some many children are listed here but is the only thing to be done to build and give these people houses? I have bought and pay for my own house but in my small estate there are 2 houses leased by the council.. it creates resentment from people who are on a grand a month mortgages ..

You do realise homelessness does not mean you have to be living on the streets don’t you! Or living in tents! There you go now, there’s a job for you, go around and count all the people living in tents full time and bring that to your local government representative to highlight the inaccuracy of homelessness figures!

Then Google Wales and Scotland on homeless numbers there . Both with devolved powers and Parliaments. Both get less per head of population subvention than Northern Ireland. Both have a lot less homeless.
Scotland has just under 30,000 assessed as homeless with a population of 5.43 million .Wales has 10,000 with a population of 3.2 million.

Asked driver , ex IRA con, about their strong support for Catelonia. He was stumped when I compared his struggle for a united Ireland with his opposition to a United Spain.
France has 140,000 homelesswith 30,000 of that number children. You are right that its a huge problem across the EU and needs to be tackled.
But I would be genuinely fearful of SF if they got into power. They practice politics with a cult like zeal. And I would be left of centre politically.

If you’re homeless in Ireland it’s very, very easy to get put up in a D4 five star hotel indefinitely, I met dozens of them over Christmas, not one of them had spent a night on the streets.

The people on the streets are generally addicts and / or people with mental health issues, the people on the streets are an indication of our failed health system, the people in plush hotels are a sign of failed government policy, but make no mistake, there is not one person sleeping rough in Ireland who hasn’t been offered hotel accommodation.
