GARDAÍ IN GALWAY are at the scene after a truck overturned amidst high winds during the Status Red weather warning this afternoon.
Footage showing the truck overturning has been shared widely on social media.
Met Éireann had issued a Status Red wind warning for Galway and Clare that came into effect earlier today and expired at 3pm. Orange warnings are now in place in these counties.
In the affected areas, westerly winds were reach mean speeds of 85 to 100 km/h in places, with gusts of 130 to 145 km/h.
The forecaster said that winds at Mace Station in Galway had exceeded the red warning levels.

In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of an overturned truck that occurred on 29/2/20 at approximately 1pm in the Maam Cross area of Co Galway.
No injuries have occurred as a result of this incident. The truck remains at the scene currently. Investigations are ongoing.

Correct me please if I’m wrong but are you covered by insurance if you drive during a red weather warning. I heard today that you aren’t and I hadn’t heard that before. My query aside, there’s a very different level of responsibility when it comes to driving a HGV as opposed to a car. Could very easily have blown over onto oncoming traffic.
@Ross O’Donnell: Yes I would’ve assumed that myself, no insurance if u drive in a red warning, can’t believe he went out tbh, whether he’s the owner or driver it’s beyond stupid, and selfish puttin other peoples lives at risk including emergency services who have enough to do without goin to help these idiots.
@Dougal67: I just saw the video. It did fall over onto the right side of the road. I thought he was leaning on the lay-by from the picture. Thank Christ no one was coming against him.
@Dougal67: I am fairly sure they covered this before and you are covered. Yellow/Orange/Red warnings mean nothing in law, they are just invented by the media. If you get stuck in a flood you are covered, I am sure if the insurers were able to void any claims they would try those first.
@Ross O’Donnell: yes you are covered. You’re also covered if you drive drunk. Part of your insurance premium is to cover yourself against your own negligence.

I remember years ago a Mulgrew lorry went over the Foyle bridge in Derry killing the driver.

If it was loaded with beer from Shell for the local stations it wouldn’t have toppled over
I hope the driver who shot the video on mobile phone while driving in those conditions gets charged.

@Philip Jordan: Yes, people should be more tolerant of a day’s delay. Presumably companies put people under pressure to make deliveries? Otherwise ignorant parrots will chant “name & shame” at them?
