Depaul opening 100-bed cocooning unit for homeless people with underlying health conditions

The service will be managed by Depaul and will be staffed by the HSE and other Section 39 organisations.

HOMELESS CHARITY DEPAUL is opening a 100-bed cocooning unit in conjunction with the HSE and the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) as a response to the Covid-19 crisis.

The unit, which is located in Dublin’s city centre, will cater to those within the homeless population with serious underlying health conditions.

The service will be managed by Depaul and will be staffed by the HSE and other Section 39 organisations where resources have been redeployed to help with this effort.

A service user’s age, as well as their underlying health conditions, will be taken into consideration to help identify and support the most vulnerable people within homeless settings.

These conditions include:

  • Cancer diagnosis or a history of cancer
  • HIV diagnosis
  • People who have had organ transplants
  • People in chemotherapy treatment
  • People with heart disease or who have had a stroke
  • Chronic respiratory conditions or asthma

The charity has also said it has opened a smaller isolation unit for a capacity for nine people.

“We are moving swiftly, together with the HSE, DRHE and other statutory agencies, to find cocooning and isolation opportunities for those most at risk within the homeless population,” Depaul CEO David Carroll said.

“Many homeless services operate on a congregated basis where the ability to self-isolate can be quite limited. This unit will provide those with serious underlying health conditions a secure setting and limit their exposure to infection,” Carroll said.

The health and wellbeing of those experiencing homelessness is paramount at this time and we are doing all we can to ensure their safety.

“It is imperative that we do everything in our power to protect the most vulnerable groups in our society during this crisis, in particular those who do not have the means to self-isolate,” he said.

@jerry slattery: maybe do a little research before you comment. They are separate charities. But yes thankfully the world is becoming more secular.

@Jerry Slattery: two separate charity numbers, two separate charities. SVP, of course still exist. From DePaul’s website “Founded by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in the Republic of Ireland in 2002 and in Northern Ireland in 2005, Depaul is a separate charity helping people most in need.”
So SVP haven’t renamed themselves as “DePaul” as your first comment would suggest.

@jerry slattery: No that is not correct. I volunteeted with Depaul for many years, when they were operated as both Depaul Trust and Depaul Ireland. They were never the same charity as SVDP. SVDP were one of a few different founders of the Depaul charity as its known now. They never changed their name from SVDP as they were always a different organisation. SVDP still operate under their original name today, both are fantastic, seperate organisations.

Feel free to find out more or help Depaul here: https://ie.depaulcharity.org/

While this is great news, why isn’t this available before now?
I don’t mean a few weeks ago but always.
I presume this is a 100 bed premises with each person being accommodated well away from the other residents.
There are many people sleeping on the streets of Dublin who would like a bed for the night but won’t go to multi bed hostels because of drug and drink consumption, robbery and violence.
Surely a solution like this would take a lot of people off the streets?

‘Cocooning’ and ‘flattening the curve’….two phrases spouted by politicians and regurgitated by media over the last fortnight, neither cohort having had a clue what they meant before that.
