Ulster Bank will pay utility bills for some customers

The bank is still struggling to clear a backlog of payments.

ULSTER BANK BRANCHES will continue to open late this week, as the lender struggles to work through a backlog of payments.

The bank had said last week that it expected the situation to return to normal by today, but admitted on Friday that this would not be the case.

Salary and social welfare payments are among those affected by a software glitch which disrupted the bank’s systems.

Around 50 branches will open until 7pm every day this week, with the bank urging customers affected to bring their documentation into a branch where cash can be dispensed.

“Customers can go to any Ulster Bank branch with their photographic ID, payslip and account details to access funds,” the bank said in a statement.

It added that any customers who need to pay electricity, gas, phone or other bills should not see problems arising from delayed payments.

For some of our customers there will be a delay in seeing credits and debits on their accounts, but during this delay we will have paid their service provider on their behalf.

The Central Bank last week criticised the continuing delays as “unacceptable”.

Total bull**** from Ulster Bank. Anybody I’ve spoken to has had no activity on their account since June 18th (myself included). Gone beyond Joke territory now i’m afraid.

Totally agree. I’ve gone well beyond patient. Want my account sorted now. Have not heard or seen of anyone having their balance updated. Bills due on Friday. We’ll see if UB will pay my bills then. Getting more angry by the day.

There was activity over the weekend in small amounts hitting accounts but this morning that has reverted back to normal(or abnormal really). I’m still waiting on 4 wages, 2 wages x 2 weeks worth. I can’t even leave the bank because I cannot access my money. I have to go off now today and check who got paid and who didn’t get paid from my account. I knew we couldn’t trust banks and bankers but never thought to this extent!

Same thing happened to me. Was suppose to receive over 500 in account last Thursday, But was not the case. Saturday morning balance was 180. I don’t even know what’s the 180 for, as I was expecting over 500.nAnd finally this morning my account was showing a bloody -111. Honestly, That’s well beyond a joke now. UB has to get things sorted and NOW. Patience has a limit. Am going in as well today.

I am making a formal complaint to the financial regulator today. I still have not been paid and this nonsense is going on 2 weeks. I’m concerned that Ulster bank needs to be held accountable and this will only happen if customers affected make that complaint.

Surely there is an element of fraud here? They have taken lodgment since the 19th of June & nothing?!?! These funds are in Ulster Bank, most likely gaining interest for them on the overnight markets. What other company would be allowed to treat their customers like this? How long would it be before the police/government got involved?? I know they are issuing I.O.U.’s when you go into them with documentation but this is not good enough. I understand that there is room for error in every business but surely there should not be room for a delay of this scale? Also why are the media not reporting this as it really is? Why are they just taking the word of the Bank as gospel, if they interviewed the customers they would get an insight into the effect a three week “glitch” is having on people. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!

This is just absolute madness. My accounts showed bizarre and totally random amounts over the weekend which are not at all representative of what should be there. They should contacting each affected customer by email or text to keep us updated, why is the onus on us to go looking for information, like we’re begging for scraps off the table. I am so out of there as soon as its sorted. The government should have stepped in at this stage. Why is this being swept under the carpet? It was on all the news and current affairs shows in England and here it’s already forgotten. I’m so outraged. The way it’s being handled is terrible. I was told when it first happened by an UB staff member “but look it you’re not the only one”!!!! She should have been apologising profusely at that stage. I hope everyone takes their business elsewhere.

In addition to making a formal complaint, I am also ending my banking relationship with Ulster Bank this week, Sorry, but almost two weeks to sort out a technical glitch is unacceptable. In addition to this, other than the continued “hope to”‘s and “sorry for the inconvenience”‘s, we have yet to hear how they will make sure a “glitch” like this doesn’t happen again in the future. Plus, I’ve been in a branch on Saturday… I know one employee is not representative for the entire organization- but I was treated with absolute disgraceful contempt. Sorry, but if your employer causes a massive mess up like this, you need to dial down the attitude dear behind-the- counter staff.

I’m not trying to excuse bad customer service here, but the front line staff are the ones getting the brunt of everyone’s anger when they have done nothing. She was probably after getting an earful off everyone that day and had her defences up.

@Foto complaining will make no difference nor will it make it them go any quicker. The problem here is that time is not on their side. All the accounts have to be updated in time order so that they can calculate interest. This means that they can’t, say, quickly sort out salary payments and so on.

I’m a UB customer. There seemed to be some updating on my accounts this weekend. Fortunately, I got paid the day before this all happened.

No one should be worried about going overdrawn – you will not be charged (or if you are it will be refunded)
This is a real disaster for Ulster Bank and RBS – their reputation is ruined and I can’t see them lasting much longer as a bank in Ireland.

I am lucky, as it is just me and my “little” bills that are affected, I suppose … all I have to do is go to a branch with my paper bits and queue for an hour and a half. But what about my friend, whose wages originate in the UB and should be going into the TSB where his bills are coming out which, obviously, is not happening. Will the UB cover the penalties occurred through that??? And what about the young guy who bought the hot dog stand who can’t get deliveries right now and so many other small business who find it difficult enough to manage their finances without this TWO WEEK chaos to mess it all up!. This is deplorable!

I’ve been threatening to leave them since they refused me an overdraft last sept when I had just payed off a loan and I was waiting for wages at a new job AND had a letter from my employer saying I had a 1 year contract. They are the worst bank I’ve ever dealt with.

I lodged money in but nothing is showing, I am just waiting to be cut off, already got a letter from the insurance and instead of 80 I now have to pay a 100. Went to the bank Fri and they told me all my direct debits were sorted out,so I guess they told me that to get rid of me.

I have to say I was in and out in 10 minutes on Saturday and the staff were great. We cant take our anger out on them. Will be leaving UB once this is sorted. Complete madness.

The only way to deal with this is by sending a very clear message to UB and closing all your accounts. Plain and simple. Doing so will also send a message to the other banks to stay on top of their game or they will meet with the same fate. Move to a new bank and avail of the benefits and discounts usually offered to new customers.

I will be handing them a letter going something like this:
    Dear Bank Manager
In view of the inconvenience and loss of confidence caused by the debacle, how much are you willing to pay into my account to stay with Ulster Bank?
You know how much my business is worth to you; your answer will determine my response.
    yours etc.

BTW rather obviously I don’t use banks for loans. I would be willing to share any fair gotten gains with other customers who owe the bank.
