Emergency powers for gardaí, and 224 people in ICU: Today's Covid-19 main points

There are now a total of 6,074 confirmed cases in Ireland, and 235 deaths.

LAST UPDATE | 8 Apr 2020

THE DEATH TOLL from Covid-19 in Ireland is now at 235, after the latest figures were announced this evening, with the total number of cases currently sitting at 6,074.

There are now 224 people in ICU with the Covid-19 disease, and the median age of the 25 additional people who died today was 80.

The impact of the virus on various sectors and industries has continued to emerge, with students at third level education being told that all in-person written and oral exams have been cancelled.

Meanwhile, warmer weather is on the way for the coming days and has led the government to sign into law new emergency measures granting gardaí the power to arrest and detain individuals flouting the Covid-19 restrictions.

Here are today’s Covid-19 main points:

  • It was announced this evening that a further 25 people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Ireland have died, and a further 325 cases have been confirmed.
  • Higher and further education exams won’t be taking place in examination centres during the Covid-19 emergency, Minister for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor has confirmed.
  • Clarity on the Junior and Leaving Certificate exams is expected to be given by the Minister of Education Joe McHugh in the next few days.
  • Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer said the majority of people who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus are recovering well in their own homes.
  • Simon Harris last night signed new regulations which will give gardaí the powers to enforce Covid-19 distancing measures tonight, while Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has insisted gardaí will only use their new powers as a last resort.
  • The number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in a hospital setting in Northern Ireland has risen to 78, with five more fatalities reported today.
  • The record number of Covid-19 clusters in nursing homes has more than doubled over a four-day period.
  • The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has today warned that gardaí should only use new emergency powers to arrest and detain people flouting Covid-19 regulations “as minimally as possible, if at all”.
  • Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will hold a conference call later today with religious leaders from a number of different faiths to discuss the current Covid-19 crisis.
  • The Department of Social Protection has acknowledged that recipients of the new Covid-19 illness benefit have received the usual payment rate of €203, rather than the increased rate of €350.
  • Freephone services have been launched by Ireland’s five main banks to help cocooning customers make payments and carry out other banking services.
  • Galway and Waterford City Councils have asked people to stop discarding plastic gloves on the ground after using them, as more people wear plastic protective equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • The chief medical officer at the Department of Health has indicated that measures aimed at combating the spread of Covid-19 will remain in place beyond this week.
  • Tesco announced changes to its home delivery services to help the company to provide more delivery slots to over 65s and customers most in need.

Here are today’s Covid-19 main international points:

  • US president Donald Trump has threatened to cease sending US funds to the World Health Organisation (WHO), claiming that the international body “missed the call” on the coronavirus pandemic.
  • UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak said Boris Johnson’s condition is “improving” and that the Prime Minister was now “sitting up in bed” after spending two nights in intensive care with coronavirus,.
  • A further 828 people have died from Covid-19 in England, bringing the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities there to 6,483.
  • Downing Street has said that lockdown measures in the UK will be reviewed around the three-week mark on Monday.
  • American folk legend John Prine, widely considered one of his generation’s most influential songwriters, died following complications of coronavirus today, his publicist told AFP on behalf of his family.
  • Authorities in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus originated, have lifted the ban on travel leaving the city with thousands leaving within hours of it being lifted.
  • EU finance ministers have failed to agree on a bailout plan to help hard hit member states face the coronavirus outbreak, after Italy refused to abandon its plea for “coronabonds” to share the burden.
  • The World Health Organisation has warned there is a global shortage of nurses in a new report published today.

@Bobby wilson: What happens when the restrictions are lifted? In a population with no immunity, we get another surge. We lockdown again. This isn’t just a few weeks of a lockdown. It’s the first of multiple lockdowns. And that’s unsustainable.

It also has a slow mutation, so it’s not like seasonal flu. Ironically compared to the UK, we will manage to achieve herd immunity by preventative flattening instead of upfront overload. Unfortunately, we didnt address the second part of Johnson/cummings plan to limit it to older people in nursing homes.

They are easing the lockdown back to the level we were at 2 weeks ago. Opening small shops under 400sqm. So comparing us to what Austria are doing is not helpful.

Starting to get a bit annoyed about how figured are being protracted. Today there have been c. 5700 cases recorded in Orelnd, but more than half of these have recovered, of which there is no mention. Nor of the fact that of the remainder 95 percent will recover with no major ill effects.
The only numbers that matter presently is the rate of admission to hospitals, then ICU and the numbers of deaths. The rest is largely irrelevant since there are undoubtedly more people infected then tested, the can’t really be mich in the way of ordinary community transmission since community has been disbanded for almost four weeks and I can’t see where this oft anticipated surge is going to come from without mass infections taking place.
Ireland has done very well in this crisis, let’s not screw it up by communicating fear when a bit of hope doesn’t go astray.

Please, WHO have been warning about a possible pandemic for years, no one listened. In January, after China called them in, WHO announced a the danger of the COVID-19 virus, in February, Trump was saying that it wouldn’t impact that much, a few deaths, it be gone with the weather in April. Only a week or two ago Trump was saying the US will be opened for business by Easter weekend. Hopefully, when the dust settles and the dead are buried, the voters will remember his inactions and his prioritisation of the economy over their lives in the November elections.

@Gerry Madden: there’s a balance between protection and totalitarianism. The laws have to be enforceable and resources in place to enforce them. We are simply not used to being restricted in this way. However there needs to be limits on the duration of these laws. The public health concern has to be weighed against the restrictions on civil liberties and the damage to the economy. Descent is vital in a functioning society , the Chinese silenced the doctors who flagged this and it got out of hand very quickly.

These people, (if from Dublin) are travelling from the biggest cluster of covid-19 in the country into a town that, to date, appears to have been spared from the virus.
They got plenty of warning about the consequences of travelling to holiday homes. They left their “civil liberties” behind when they started their journey.

@Nathan: What denial of civil liberties? Are you really going to pull that card and say that you should be entitled to do what you want – travel where you want etc. in a time of a pandemic?

Do you care that little for the vulnerable in our society?

When this is all over perhaps we might get daily reports on the number of people who pass away due to the ordinary winter flu. Their lives could also be prolonged if generally visitors to nursing homes were required to use sanitizers in ordinary times.

Please keep it in perspective and look up stats – the numbers are being completely blown out of proportion and anything to do with this covid19 is being completely sensationalized.

    Heart Attack Death = Covid-19
    Cancer Death = Covid-19
    Pneumonia Death = Corvid-19
    Regular Flu Death = Covid=19

This is what some New York nurses said was happening at their hospitals. Peoples deaths were been finalized as been from covid-19, even though the nurses said that these patients did not actually die from the covid-19 virus. Other very similar stories are now coming out from other nurses around the world too. It’s very strange, indeed!

If an ambulance needed to gain entry quickly they would be stumped.
Can the Councils put up notices and the Gardai ticket or clamp lazy thoughtlesspeople who could have parked 10 foot away.

Sad to see these numbers, i live in New Zealand and as soon as it reached 100 infections here the government put the whole country into complete lockdown for 4weeks,pharmacy and supermarket only things open.its been 2weeks now and daily cases have dropped from peak of 90 a day down to 24 today.. I wish Ireland had of acted sooner but seems business is more important than people
