I haven’t really talked to my husband since the results came out. It feels like the government hates our traditional marriage and everything it stands for. It’s a difficult barrier to surmount. We just don’t feel connected anymore. Likely the same across the country.

Jenni get over it, if you want to stand behind a catholic order which has been run by and (we now know) run by generations of catholic priests and nuns who abused and neglected generations of our children that’s your choice. However, Being a catholic country actually has nothing to do with the issue. But we, as a nation have chosen to say yes. For me personally, I am catholic, I am a mother, and I voted yes for my children. Let me just say this, it takes a LOT more energy to hate and criticise, than it does to love and accept. Not my narrative at all. Equality for many is still a long way off. The LGBT* community has made massive leaps in recent years with regards to becoming more equal, and legally I suppose we’ve pretty much made it. The next struggle is the social aspect of equality and homosexuality becoming normalised and accepted as ‘okay’ in society on an individual level. People like you are what stops that from happening. Sure, gay people can now get married, but what good is that if a married gay couple can’t walk down the street holding hands without fear of verbal or even physical abuse being hurled at them? Even during the referendum debates we had people say that they were afraid that their kids would have to learn about homosexuality if the vote was passed, effectively trying to stop their children from learning that gays even exist. So once again what you said in your comment is not my narrative because it simply untrue. I hope we can use this milestone as a foundation to move forward and carry on with the work that needs to be done. When we finally get there, whenever that may be, people like you will see that you can never win when your argument only propagates more hatred.

Similar to the Cllr above, I too was up and at a tally centre at 8.30 yesterday morning. The boxes I tallied in Cork were all coming in above 50% Yes (three boxes). Not all that many spoiled either, but a couple, both Yes and No were someone obviously didn’t read what the hell they were supposed to be doing. By 10.30, we knew our results were matching the other general reports and that Yes had it.

Although if anyone can tell me wtf the point is in handing blank pages, I’d be interested to know. Why even bother? O.o

Look, an “immediate recount” isn’t actually done because one person “can’t believe that the people would vote for X”. It’s done when the results are too close to call or there’s seriousreason to believe in tampering. Just for the sake of letting you know how it’s done:

Ordinary people can sign up to help in the tallying. Mostly, unsurprisingly, they tend to involve people from the campaigns on both sides, since they’re the most interested and are likely to be following sites that tell them they can. If you are a tallyer, you write your name, your box number/name of the area, and tick Yes or No (or Spoiled) as the pages are placed in front of you while they’re being sorted. You must not touch a ballot paper. If one falls on the ground in front of you, you step back from it, to prevent ballot papers being stolen. There’s two tallyers per station and two sorters per station and everything is done over an open table with people going behind to watch it being done and General Public who are interested watching the proceedings. Once the sheets are sorted into fifties and bound, and a box is finished, the sorters count the papers and the tallyers count their results and write them down. That’s the prelim count. Mistakes happen, ofc. That’s why the count is redone once they’re all in by another group. It’s pretty hard to falsify it, overall.

Nah, not really. Some spoiled, some had the Xs ground in so hard that I’m amazed the paper survived. I think the presidential ones were more “entertaining” really, as ( wasn’t counting those, just saw some being sorted from the white sheets) a few had comments, generally along the lines of “Don’t need this position” and “Stupid waste of time” sorta thing. Even more of a waste of time to write it really, since it just means the ballot paper is spoiled and doesn’t get counted, no matter where the cross is! People writing in both boxes is also a no-no (literally, at one stage). Obey the rules, guys. Writing “No” (or indeed “Yes” in both boxes is also a spoil afaik, as well as putting a tick in one and a cross in the other. Ah, people. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t prevent it from sitting in the pond.

Only done it the once, so I can’t be entirely certain, but as far as I know (didn’t have that issue with the ones I counted), anything written on the ballot paper invalidates it. The tick or X must be in the box as well. If someone wrote Yes or No within the appropriate box, I counted it, but if someone wrote Yes or No in both boxes, I didn’t, and marked the Spoiled box on the tally sheet. These were only the preliminary counts, mind you, and I’m pretty sure they go through a further counting process as well (which is why you get the results being announced as preliminary results and then definitive results later on). Either way, it’s best to be consistent. They will get recounted. I suspect that the reasoning for not counting ones with writing on (or at least more than Yes/No) is that it could, in theory, make the voter identifiable, particularly in tiny contituencies, like the islands, which is against the secrecy principle of the vote.
