Poll: Have you cut your hair yet?

Social media users have shared their valiant efforts in recent days.

UNFORTUNATELY, BARBERS AND hairdressers were not considered essential services, forcing many of us to take the trimmers into our own hands.

Experts say we should wait it out and leave it for the professionals but not everyone will want to let their mullet grow out.

Motivated by boredom and/or necessity, social media users have been sharing their valiant efforts in recent days, including bald patches and dodgy dye jobs.

So, today we’re asking: Have you cut your hair yet?

Poll Results:

Not yet (4374)
Yes, it went well (3745)
No, I'm letting it grow (3739)
Yes, but it didn't turn out well (682)
No, I'm bald (297)

Let us know how your DIY cut went in the comments below.

Easing of the restrictions will come eventually but I don’t think it’ll happen by Sunday. We’ll probably have another two weeks before they’re lifted

If 2 million people die around the globe from this, there will be near 0 confidence left in trade, it will crash the economy harder than shutting down temporarily ever could. We do need to restart the economy but we need to measure it against health precautions also.

You cannot mitigate a virus when we have no vaccine. Preach about how its the flu all you want, remember one thing, the flu is a near death sentence to society without a vaccine, thankfully we have one, we don’t for this one.

There are only two ways out of this: lock everyone down until a vaccine is available in 12 – 18 months (not gonna happen), or build up herd immunity at a slow enough pace so as not to overwhelm the health services.

The fact is, we need people getting the virus and getting immune at a steady pace so that we can get back to some semblance of normality while normalising some of the social distancing techniques we’ve implemented in order to protect the most vulnerable.

Basically instead of 20 dieing a day 90 die, they have 250 icu beds, about 80 free. This has not even hit us yet as soon as people can enter Ireland again can they afford to shut us down again? I don’t think they will lift the restrictions all at once. They will probably be left in place as they are for another couple of weeks, then be eased gradually as and when the public health and medical advisors tell the government it’s safe to do so. They need to weigh up the potential risk of lifting restrictions too soon vs leaving them in place too long and the chance of people getting fed up and not compling with them and the economic cost.

This is going to be a really difficult call to make, as there are many factors to consider. The real economic impact has yet to realized for many, the social cost of isolation, the cancellation of many hospital and GP visits etc all have an impact. We also need to ensure that systems and processes are in place for ongoing testing and early warnings of any second wave.
One thing that can be certain is whatever the decision on easing the lockdown, we will see certain political personalities not in government on the media saying its wrong

Yes I agree that their is going to be a big fall out from this, but if your suggesting we ease up on the restrictions based on people getting depressed then I would respectfully have to question that remedy. The potential demise of large groups of our society I’m sure is the last thing anyone wants or needs right now. In fact it will only increase the issue of depression where it previously never existed.

There are an awful lot of the “don’t lift the lockdown, it’s only a few week” brigade here. I only wish I could be that naive.

What happens when we lift restrictions? As we’ve so little population immunity, cases surge. Remember, this started with 1 case in Ireland, and has lead to exponential growth. Nothing has changed – 1 case will lead to exponential growth.

It will most likely be a case of opening up/locking down/opening up/locking down. Prof Luke O’Neill wrote about this yesterday: https://www.independent.ie/opinion/comment/a-second-surge-of-the-coronavirus-later-in-the-year-remains-a-possibility-with-more-lockdowns-39103499.html

The lockdown/opening cycle will probably continue until a vaccine in 18 months. But with that comes with enormous mental and physical health costs – there’s an almost perfect correlation between increased unemployment and increased deaths.

Here’s a good article on the dishonesty of the “lets just lock down for a few weeks and this will all be over” argument: https://medium.com/@wpegden/a-call-to-honesty-in-pandemic-modeling-5c156686a64b?fbclid=IwAR14ql8DveVXN5qYrOUi53tsSZIwneX9zhpgZRJqaO2tg9UDxJRV7GTrJ6I

They claimed that they could not stop the number of infections and whole point was to “flatten the curve” and take pressure off the health care system.

Surely this goes both ways, There are 2,000 beds free in the hospitals and over 1,000 free ventilators. Is the curve not flattened too much?? Why are they threatening further restrictions when we have so much available man power in the hospitals. They have been wildly wrong on the numbers every step of the way.

Do we not have some semblance of trying the balance the destruction this going to cause families economically across the country. Should we not be easing restrictions on a week by week basis and re-evaluating based on how the hospitals are coping. How long do we stay on lock down before irreversible damage to the country. Surely someone has to have a date in mind where we just have to turn things back on no matter what.

As one wise person said fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Taiwan has learned from there mistakes during both SARS / MARS outbreak now with Covid 19 they recorded just 373 cases due to there quick action. The ECDC needs to send officials over to that country and learn from them. As a whole Europe needs to have a shared Travel manifesto so we can see direct / indirect flights per person coming into a giving country and we can isolate like Taiwan did with people coming in from infected areas.
