Government's delayed childcare plan for health workers needs approval by health experts

The National Public Health Emergency team will discuss the plan tomorrow, says the Taoiseach.

A NEW PLAN to sort out childcare for healthcare workers is to be considered by the National Public Health Emergency team tomorrow.

Speaking in Dublin today, he said: “We know that there is a significant demand from healthcare workers to have childcare provided so that they can continue to go to their jobs. In some families and households it has been working okay because one of the couple is working from home or has lost their job – which is really unfortunate.

“We have come across incidents where there are two healthcare workers in the same household and they are struggling to get childcare.

“We have worked up a solution – the money there to do it. But it does require public health clearance from the National Public Health Emergency Team, so they are going to discuss it tomorrow.

“I know that is has been very delayed and people are very frustrated about it, and there are a lot of contrasting views about it, but it needs public health clearance.”

Childcare for health workers is something which has been mooted for some time now, with the Taoiseach stating earlier this month that the government was ready to push the button on a plan. However, he said such measures had to be cleared by the public health team.

Varadkar admitted a couple of weeks ago it was taking much longer than he would have liked to get a plan signed off on.

“I understand people’s frustrations – public health has to be the number one concern.”

Today, he acknowledged the delay.

“I know people are very frustrated about it… whatever we do we have to get public health clearance, and one of the things we’ve tried to avoid during  the emergency is households mixing. So we just need to make sure that the National Health Emergency team are
satisfied with the proposal,” he said.

If the new plan is approved tomorrow, the Taoiseach said an announcement would be made during the week.

    He can run if he wants but he wont get elected as everybody knows he is probably the most arrogant prat in the Dail, and that takes some doing.

    He would get elected comfortably and yes he is an arrogant prat but why why wouldn’t FG send Eamon Coughlan who is more likeable guy, is very capable and doesn’t leave a by-election.

    That might all be true but if your having to sit beside Hayes every day in the Dáil canteen sending him off to Europe might be a great option.

    Does Enda just want to ship him out for a while and then have a ultra conservative on the front bench once he looses the next election. Perhaps they just want to signal this so they can get the funding in. Ah yes, democracy where corporate political funding means that everyone’s voice is equally respected.

    agreed ciaran, but he is not a teacher he is currently employed by the state as a politician ; if he was a teacher he would be in a classroom ;
    How many politicians have a qualification for the job of lick-hole to Angela ; Brian Cowen had a degree in politics would you suggest we bring back Brian Cowen because he is qualified .
    Politics is about legislating within the legal constraints of the constitution ; it is also about honesty as the principle of honesty is the very foundation of law ; no honesty, no adherence to the constitution , no honesty then no right to collect taxes ;
    Honesty Ciaran ; he is not a teacher he is apolitician who qualified as a teacher went into the classroom and realised how gullible and trusting the irish people are by getting an insight into their thinking through reading their kids ; black cat, black mkitten ; that is why there are so many teachers inpolitics ; they realise how dtupid people really are ! its dispicable but that is the truth , a teacher who enters politics is an arrogant son of a b. the teachers who stay in the classroom are not …….

    They did, for new TDs. So Hayes and Kenny are safe. Similar to the changes in SW I guess, only applicable for new entrants. It is a particularly bad state of affairs with Mr. Kenny considering he’s been a TD since 1975 so he was 24 when elected. Basically he taught for a year or so at best and can claim a pension.. And then there’s Europe to look forward to after he jumps ship. The gravy train really does roll for some people I suppose.
