@Paul Maguire: exactly whats the point in non eu nationals getting a valuable qualification or trade with a view to moving to a country like ireland, when they see other people entering on dodgy student visas working in the black economy and then being allowed to stay by dubiuos rule changes. The result is we dont get the high skilled migrants that we really need as they will choose another country that values their qualifications highly. That means that the bar to enter ireland must be much higher so that it becomes a desired country for high skilled migrants. Afterall that is why australia and canada are highly desired countries to migrate to, they are not easy countries to migrate to and almost impossible to stay and work in black economy.

Non-EEA nationals who come here to study go through a very rigorous process when they apply for student visas. They cannot come here on a student visa to learn English FYI. In fact, in almost all universities, they are required to have a minimum score in IELTS / TOEFL which is also presented as part of their visa application. Along with that the fees they pay are in certain cases almost 10 times that of an EU national. Visas are renewed every year for a fee of €300 and an extra €100 if they want to renter the country if they wish to travel. If anyone thinks that they have it easy here in this country, spend some time talking to any non-EEA students and I am sure they enlighten you with some facts which may change your perception. The folks in INIS knows how much of a tough time they do give these students and news like this is comforting after a long struggle living the life of an immigrant student.

@Seán Ó Breasláin: The reason these schools closed down was not because they were allowing students to get into the country. Rather they were letting them be in the country unfairly once they were here. On certain situations students are allowed into the country for an undergraduate course with the condition that have to do an English language course along with the other subjects. The students don’t attend these English language classes and these schools faked the attendance figures for a fee and the students were able to work more than the 20 hours stipulated in their visa conditions, therefore cheating the Irish immigration system. You are correct in saying that it was a way that they could hide. But to hide for more than 7 years using a language course is simply impossible. One can only extend their Visa if they are taking up a course higher than the level they did previously. A level 8 student cannot take up a level 7 course again to stay in the country and so on. It had to be an undergraduate or a postgraduate course the student had to study to extend their stamp 2 yearly.

@Sharan Singh: I think that you are overcomplicating things. First off if you are so unhappy and think that Ireland is a racist country you can leave at any moment. Nobody is forcing you to be here. Talking about high fees and taxes is pointless as you knew what you will be paying way before you came.
Secondly, you do not need a status to apply for the visa for another country. You can easily do that from your own home country. This article is about foreign non-EU students. Not about refugees who fled from some military conflict.
Students coming here are expected to be economically self sufficient, those 20 hours a week they are allowed to work is meant to be a supplement to their own funds they should have when they want to come to study here. Whole idea is that people can come here to study and they can work a little if they want to. Not that they should come here to work to finance their study. That is entirely different matter.

If there is only 75k jobs being created where are the jobs coming out of for 60,000 foreigners and thousands more of Irish people looking for jobs or starting out on jobs front. I reackon our Government is lying about numbers of non irish getting housing, welfare etc etc. Also the fast majority of Homeless I see on the streets are Irish!

We need stricter immigration laws in this Country before it gets worse.

@Seán Ó Breasláin: Just to clarify my friend was born and bred in dublin, went to NY and worked as an illegal immigrant. Here (in Ireland) non-eu students are legally working here and paying tax but without any benefits or claims. They are bringing money into the country, paying different fees for a year or years to avail better life as every one wishes for. Make sense :-)

@Pat Patovic: yes I am unhappy for the treatment I have received in here for last 11 years. I am unhappy that how slow the government is in making decisions. I unhappy that I worked as a Irish community government worker for 3 years and was induced into resigning. Just to be clear none of the immigrants received a list of prices you have to pay to renew your visa in the country. And every year they are planing to raise those prices if anything they would try to hide that instead that people. Take Your neighbour country UK for example they charge only once for a visa if it’s a 3 years course you will get 3 years of visa and no reentry to go out of the country and come back. Yes I can go back home and apply but the case will always ignored, where u lived is does matter around the world.

They should be asked to leave.

No problem with this as long as they are working and contributing. We are now almost back to full employment so plenty of jobs to go around. Still thousands signing on, but this was the same during the tiger years of full employment. Even though these people are officially classed as ‘looking for work’, the State has 2 unofficial classifications. The Unemployable and the Work Refusers. More power to these foreign ‘students’ as long as they are not work shy.

To all my immigrants friends look at their comments, look at their likes. Why do we even provide our food, clothes and other resources to this country when they don’t even want us here. We should pull away everything from them and go to a better country who will gladly accept us. Let this country cry to other European countries for loans. We should all move away and let them fight their own homes and homeless crisis.

With this scheme govt makes millions. 2000 euros for first year fees. Than every year 1500 euros to pay that include visa renewal, rentry visa and health insurance.one student pay 9500 euros in 5 years. Means 5500 students pay approx 52250000 euros in 5 years time. Moreover there are more people on retirement age and need labour force to pay taxes.

@Paddy Power: the first year when any student comes to Ireland has to pay the max fee depends on the course but the minimum i would say not less than 4k to 10k. Most students from South American Countries pay mini 2500 and then immigration fee depends for how long the stamp they get on their passport, every time they have to pay 300.

Even though they are giving leave to remain the whole process is another scam business 2 years student probation visa which will be given to you on yearly basis, so every year €300, then after completed to those you have to show a proof that you have paid taxes those 2 years in the country in order to be entitled for 5 years residency stamp 4 which will be given yearly again so every year you will have to €300 again. This is how Irish government is milking us for money and not to forget €100 for travel out of the country.

Ireland don’t have enough numbers of Doctors / Software developer / IT engineers (critical skill employee) full fill local job market. Hospitals and IT company’s waste lots of time and money looking for one out side EU. this the forward thinking step taken by Irish Govt to negate that issue partially.

For everyone saying that these people are looking for a free way to live in your country, understand that all they want is actually to be legal AND work under Irish laws, which is to pay taxes. Most foreigners work their asses off at jobs most of your own people don’t want and so many choose to live off welfare. Borders were put there my men to control and cause exactly this thinking of separation. To make people feel more special than others. You only have a better life because you were there before and were able to make so many your slaves and explored their lands. Now, the least you can do is have some empathy and get to know these people before you judge them. Get your facts right, not from manipulative media channels.
