Naval service detains Spanish fishing boat

The vessel was detained off the Cork coast this afternoon over an alleged breach of fishing regulations.

THE NAVAL SERVICE has detained a Spanish-registered fishing boat off the coast of Cork over an alleged breach of fishing regulations.

The vessel was stopped by the LE Aisling around 25 nautical miles off the coast of Mizen Head this afternoon.

The boat is currently being brought to Castletownbere under the supervision of the LE Aisling. It is expected to arrive at around 9 o’clock tonight, when the vessel will then be handed over to the Gardaí.

It is the 9th vessel that has been detained by the Naval Service so far this year, which is the same number of boats which were detained for the whole of 2011.

Shayne They usually get a fine, the catch & gear is confiscated and the most is allowef to leave. A bit of an irritant for them but that’s it.

Thanks Sean, If this is the 9th boat so far this year and they probably only catch a fraction of what happens then this is not nearly good enough as a deterrent ..

    Massive fines required.

I would have thought it is a good thing that the Spannish fishing trawler is detained and that if we patrolled our own waters it would be good to keep our fish stocks up ! I understood that since the EU imposed fishing laws on us , we Irish have less say in our fish reserves ….

I hope all you out there who want to disband the defence forces, navy included, are listening! We need to protect what little waters we still have. Fair play to the Navy on this operation but it gets you thinking… how many have they missed?

So Spaniards have to sail boat hundreds miles away for catch and their fish is still 2 times cheaper than in Ireland. Maybe Irish fishmongers use golden nets?
