HSE CEO Paul Reid speaking at a media briefing today in St Laurence's Church in Grangegorman, Dublin. Leon Farrell/Photocall Ireland

Coronavirus: 4 deaths and 57 new confirmed cases in Ireland

The Department of Health released the figures this evening.

A FURTHER FOUR people with Covid-19 have sadly died, the Department of Health has said, and an additional 57 cases of the disease have also been confirmed in Ireland.

That brings the total number of deaths from people with Covid-19 to 1,608, and the total number of confirmed cases to 24,639.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre’s analysis of the total confirmed cases as of Friday 22 May shows:

  • The gender breakdown of confirmed cases shows 57% are female and 43% are male
  • The median age of confirmed cases is 48 years
  • 3,222 cases (13%) have been hospitalised
  • Of those hospitalised, 394 cases have been admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU)
  • 7,819 cases are associated with healthcare workers
  • Dublin has the highest number of cases at 11,873 (48% of all cases) followed by Cork with 1,428 cases (6%) and then Kildare with 1,392 cases (6%)
  • Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 59%, close contact accounts for 38%, travel abroad accounts for 3%

Reacting to the announcement of the figures this evening, Health Minister Simon Harris said that in eight of the last nine days, “the number of new Covid-19 cases has been below 100″.

Today’s new cases [is] 57. This progress is thanks to YOU and your family. We now need to maintain it and work to carefully find ways of living alongside the virus by following our plan. Stay safe. We will get there.

At a HSE briefing this morning, HSE Chief Operations Officer Anne O’Connor said that the number of people attending emergency departments across the country is slowly increasing, as fears about Covid-19 begin to fade.

@Alan Bury: Yes, the mild lockdown, coupled with social distancing, is working. (Even if some of the people aren’t complying). Let’s keep it up; it’s the only thing that seems to work (not to forget the generous supply of hand sanitisers by so many of our retail outlets). Maybe we have a chance of a shot at ridding ourselves of this entirely, or almost entirely.

@John Hazelnut: mild lockdown? This is a significant lockdown with significant consequences once they numbers drop.
Real jobs are being lost. Others will die because of lack of funding to our healthcare in future. We cannot borrow indefinitely .
Wait till the first round of pay cuts are suggested for public sector which won’t be long at the rate we are burning through borrowings. The private sector is haemorrhaging cash and jobs. The unemployment is going to be at unprecedented levels this time next year. And this virus is still going to be here . And then people are going to say why did we lockdown.
    It’s not a mild lockdown.

@Mary Oliver: so Mary, if we try an maintain a 1m distance, let’s say your in a queue at the supermarket checkout (1m apart) and the person infront of you takes a step backwards, they enter your 1m ‘bubble’ and you would need to step backwards, and a domino affect occurs.

So the logic in a 2m separation is to always ensure a 1m separation occurs.

In practical terms the 2m rule is correct in social settings.

I’ve even seen a dance event being held in Germany at the weekend with a DJ playing, not that I agree with that particular event but it cries something strong, Ireland are extremely slow and completely ignoring the economy. LEO is acting like we have a different virus to the rest of the world. We are due to have small businesses open 8 weeks after most European countries have opened similar. Pubs 12 weeks after Europe, restaraunts 8 weeks after Europe. Construction never closed in most of Europe bar Spain/France/Italy so we are 7 weeks behind there too

@Séadna O’Grádaigh: I agree with you these kind of items aren’t brought to the table by Leo and Simon. I live in a town and you can’t do much in 5km with everything closed myself.

Personally, I’m not an expert for anything lockdown related beside my own family but if other parents have children who aren’t allowed to play with friends because they are to young for social distancing which are saying since week that they are lonely, starting to play computer or watch the telly in hours long sessions because the parents work or do stuff… and if they then cry in the park when they hear that the playground doesn’t open anytime soon, parents can’t keep a promise to go do something ALONE IN THE NATURE because it’s a 15 km away….

That’s just my personal perception of today….

On a bigger picture I understand that there have to be restrictions but as Leo and Simon don’t want to evaluate on that and have this rude Dr
Holohan belittling our fears they aren’t suitable for the task. Maybe someone else from FFG but not them…

But that’s just me getting emotional.

We can fast track the reopening. It was only ever like a flu and retrospective examination of total death figures will show that.

But while you are a virologist which other factors beside the current trend we have now in May have you used to predict the numbers for August? You colleagues don’t seem gifted enough to say for sure what happens in August.

@8-Bit-Relic: You asked where I got the August date. I told you where. The trends are plain to be seen. Just look back over the numbers for the last few weeks. The numbers of cases may continue to fall or rise. Even the dog on the street knows that. Hence why the government put in place the plan to reopen. August 10th was given as the proposed date to open pubs. They could possibly open sooner but it depends on how well the virus is controlled. There is also the risk the opening day could be moved out further that Aug 10th. Pubs will be the last to reopen as they bring the most risk. Due to people getting drunk.

@barry moore: Now, you have at least stated it almost as it was presented.

However, nobody involved in the study of the virus made the statement that the virus will be for sure that the trend will continue until August. The dates were put out as a rough orientation. The virus is new and we have no data how we will behave nor what a future mutation could have in stock for us. It is actually speculated by the expert that there will be a second wave.

These are some of the reasons mentioned by virulogists why a prediction can’t be presented as something put in stone. I hope that you see the difference in those views.

according tony hullabaloo less than 5pc of people who died with covid died in ICU. So more than 95 pc were never admitted to ICU. The only logical conclusion that can be drawn is that these 95 pc plus we’re not healthy enough to withstand the quite invasive procedures that are needed in ICU. So 95 pc plus people who died WITH covid were either too old, too frail, had a do not resuscitate order or their underlying condition was too severe for ICU. Why are we not being told this?

I think the country now is in a huge dilemma. We’ve successfully down the spread of this deadly virus to almost insignificant levels but only due to the implementation of extraordinary measures. As a functioning society and economy, however, there’s a limit to how long we can exist in this state of suspended animation before everything implodes and we emerge irreparably damaged.
I honestly, don’t envy anybody in a position of authority who is tasked with making lockdown easing decisions over the coming months.
