Part of the site which is to be developed. Fingal County Council

Fingal's €12 million greenway project connecting Malahide Castle to Newbridge House gets green light

Construction on the site is to start straight away.

FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL said it is to start preparations for the construction of the Broadmeadow Greenway after receiving official notification that An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for the €12 million project.

The 6km off-road walking and cycling greenway will link Malahide to the Broadmeadow Estuary. It will also include a 280 metres long bridge crossing the Broadmeadow Estuary on the Malahide Railway Viaduct.

The greenway will travel from Malahide Castle to Newbridge House through demesne and parklands, rural farmlands and village environments.

The council said it will become a destination greenway for local residents, tourists and day-trippers while also playing a role in the developing network of sustainable transport routes in Fingal.

With the Baldoyle to Portmarnock Greenway scheduled to officially open next month, the Broadmeadow Greenway will be the next piece to be completed and plans for the rest of the route, which will eventually run from Sutton to Balbriggan, will be unveiled later this year.

The Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Eoghan O’Brien, said: “This is great news for Malahide and Donabate coming as it does at a time when businesses in both towns are dealing with the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Linking two of our regional parks for walkers, joggers and cyclists will provide many opportunities and I welcome the Council’s commitment to commence construction in 2021.  As a local councillor, this is something that I have pushed for many years and it is great to see it finally get the green light.”

@tuco: the majority of the greenway was built on an old railway line, so a lot of it needed modernisation. Land prices are more expensive too in Dublin. This is a full new project, hence the cost.

@Darragh O’Toole: I’d be more concerned at the €20m cost of a 2.7km cycle route in Clontarf to be honest. Somebody somewhere is making a heap of money off these public projects.

@Robert Conneely: It’s not just one bridge. The northern section has to cross another river and a wide stretch of boggy ground. Tbh it’s more a question of why Waterford was so cheap than why Malahide is so expensive. €1m/km would be a pretty decent price for a straightforward bike path alongside a road, in my book. This is 6 km on a route that largely physically doesn’t exist yet.

Great news! First few weeks of lockdown with hardly any cars, cycling was a dream. Now not so much. Would be great to have more cycle lanes around Malahide especially in the good weather. More of an incentive to leave the car at home

Great work! In Calgary, there was an initiative in the 90s to connect all major public parks with greenway style paths. I wonder if we could promote that in our cities in Eire??
