'High-risk engagement': Hairdressers to remain shut until 20 July

You’ll have to wait a bit longer.

HAIRDRESSERS AND BARBERS will remain shut until 20 July, it emerged this afternoon.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that the Government was introducing an “accelerated” road map for reopening the country.

As part of the revised roadmap it’s planned all internal travel restrictions will be lifted by 29 June, while most retail outlets have been given the green light to reopen from Monday.

However, Varadkar said hairdressers and barbers will have to remain shut as their work involves “almost face-to face contact” which makes it a “high-risk engagement”.

The Irish Hairdressers Federation (IHF), a representative body for the industry, last month presented a number of plans to Government in a bid to get reopened sooner.

Hairdressers wanted to introduce regular temperature checks, log customers’ names and phone numbers to help with contact tracing, as well as regular hand washing and social distancing measures.

A host of other restrictions are to be eased in the coming days.

From Monday, most retail outlets will be allowed to open their doors. Shopping centres will also be able to open from 15 June.

Shops will also provide dedicated hours for those who are over 70 or in an at-risk group.

The government is encouraging people to shop locally, shop safely and support businesses in their community.

You can read a detailed breakdown of the accelerated roadmap here

I went to the dentist yesterday the whole procedure was seemless and very safe with the PPE etc. Closing until July 20th for hairdresser/Barbers is ridiculous.

@Ruairi O Gorman: I think it’s June 15th for the UK so those near the border can just get taken care of there. If you have the cash fly over and get it done there!

@Ruairi O Gorman: to be fair a dentist appointment is generally more important than a hairdressers appointment plus less people go to the dentist or are stuck waiting.

@Ruairi O Gorman: It’s not ridiculous at all. It’s in fact, quite sensible. Dentists are trained to, and already in the habit of practicing within a sterile or highly hygienic setting — so the risk of infection during a dental visit is low. Hairdressers however, have no such experience and their environment isn’t comparable to a dentists in terms of hygene.

@Fergal O’ Reilly: its hard rocket science appointment only ,your greeted at the door given a mask you check your temperature and sanitize your hands. 100% safer than walking around a soon to be packed shopping center.

@Fergal O’ Reilly: except in a dentist’s your saliva is flying into the air as the drill works. The next patient comes in and opens their mouth in a room filled with your saliva particles. At least in a hairdressers everyone could wear a mask.

I wonder will people be interested in going shopping for fancy goods, eating in nice expensive restaurants, staying in classy hotels etc while they look hideous. Some might say that it’s shallow not to want to go out looking like you’ve been dragged through a ditch but it is a self esteem issue. Definitely some will put off spending on treats until they feel they can truly enjoy them.

@Paul Walsh: anyone that does not want to go out to a nice restaurant until they got their hair done have their priorities all wrong. Not going there because your still a little cautious , fair enough , but because your hair is a bit off? Really?

@John fitzpatrick: Going out and spending is a treat. People will wait until they can really enjoy it. It’s their money and their choice. There may also be people who will got out to eat in an expensive restaurant just to support it and not care about the enjoyment. That’s their choice as well – no need to be judgmental
