Dr Ronan Glynn has issued a fresh warning about Covid-19. Sasko Lazarov/RollingNews.ie

Many Irish people suffering prolonged side effects from Covid-19, health official warns

Dr Ronan Glynn said it serves as a message to people who don’t think they are vulnerable to the disease.

IRELAND’S DEPUTY CHIEF Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, has warned that many people are suffering from prolonged side effects from Covid-19, despite being recorded as having recovered from the illness.

At a media briefing this evening, Dr Glynn said that health authorities are seeing an increase in the number of people taking a long time to fully recover their energy levels and having difficuties with exercise tolerance, even if they weren’t hospitalised for the illness.

In Ireland 92% of confirmed Covid-19 cases are marked as having recovered from the virus. However, Dr Glynn said that many of those people still are not back to feeling how they felt before they contracted the disease.

As Covid-19 is a very new infection medics are still learning about how it affects people over time. Dr Glynn explained that it’s not unusual for people to take a long time to recover after a significant respiratory illness, but they still need to closely monitor people for prolonged side effects.

He added that it’s difficult to provide much more detail at present because many of the people are still within the first two months of their illness.

The health official said that it serves as a message to people that don’t perceive theselves as being vulnerable to the disease because the ultimate outcome is “unknown”.

Just because, perhaps, you’re younger, or perhaps you don’t perceive yourself as someone who might suffer the most significant effects of this disease, if you are to become infected, it doesn’t neccessarily mean that you shouldn’t be doing all in your power to ensure that you don’t get this disease, that people in your family, your friends don’t get this disease, because the ultimate outcome for you, or any one of your family or friends, is unknown.

Dr Glynn advised anyone recovering from Covid-19 to contact their GP with any questions or concerns they may have.

There have been a total of 25,238 confirmed cases of the coronavirus illness in Ireland after eight new cases were announced this evening. Health officials said that a further eight patients have died from the disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,703.

I would love to see an investigation into the money they get from the taxpayer. They are 2 independents who are spineless, sneaky and will only do what’s popular not what’s right. They are what you would call “prostitutes of politicians”. No one can speak on the others speaking time never mind on one independents time over the other. They are not a party but to try and sneak in while the other is speaking clearly shows the sneaky tactics that they use. No time for them or what they stand for. Which is primarily themselves.

Astonished at the number of comments that are based on image and appearance. Are the Irish now so gullible that they will base their evaluation of people on image and dress. How about what a person says and does regardless of appearance, accent, color, creed etc. get back to reality Irish people and your country may indeed prosper again.
Not a supporter of any politicians in Ireland ….. just a perplexed observer wondering how well educated intelligent people form opinions in the modern world ….. image, spin, dress code, politically correct phrases and sounds ….. what nonsense !!!!

All that was missing was a pantomime dame. The quality of debate is lamentable. The appearance adopted by some TDs is deplorable and all defended on the basis of some fake solidarity for the plain people. Wearing a tie or brushing one’s hair and speaking clearly and articulately is the least one should expect of parliamentarians.

@FlopFlipU: Any time I’ve watched the UK parliament, it seems highly repressed or confrontational. I put that down to the historical need to confront and face down their monarchs. And possibly all the bars. Our TDs are all elected equals, aren’t they? Decently salaried, generous expenses paid? No reason why they can’t debate topics with respect. Sharing time is normal enough. And I’d say the vast majority of the Irish people don’t care who proposes what as long as it’s serving our best interests. A good idea is a good idea no matter who or what party proposes it. I’m sick of reading quibbles over what amounts to a stupid tug-of-war over who gets publicity and credit. They’re public servants.
