AIB: reports of 90 branch closures is 'total speculation'

An internal document issued to AIB staff yesterday stated that “unviable” branches would be closed.

AIB HAS DISMISSED reports that up to 90 branches could close as a result of cost-cutting measures.

An internal statement issued to staff yesterday reiterated details from AIB’s annual report that some “unviable” branches would be closing as a result of an extension of banking services available at post offices, and the opening of branches in new locations.

A source at the bank told TheJournal.ie that the figure of 90 branches being reported today is “total speculation”, and that no figure has been made public by AIB.

The source also said that this information about branch closures is not new, that it was reported on in March and that the document issued to staff was merely reiterating those plans.

    Hardly a surprise. 270 branches is ludicrous for such a small country.

    Couple of issues here;

    1) As a nation we’re heavy reliant on cheques and wanting to go into a branch, why? I haven’t been to my bank in two years. Online banking, telephone banking, mobile app, Visa/Debit.

    2) refer to point one. Absolutely no need to want to go into a branch nowadays unless you’re looking for loan.

    On another note, if banks are closing branches and try to put the emphasis on online banking, our Internet coverage needs to improve, if you’re outside Dublin, chances are that your signal is crap. More needs to be done. Latvia have better coverage, LATVIA!

    Relatives of mine had no Internet signal and were going mad as they could not get broadband but it seems that the Vodafone USB dongle works pretty much anywhere.

    Restructuring of these banks and all it entails is slower than the wheels of justice, and last time I checked that was pretty slow….

    Would say the Dun Laoghaire branch is on the chopping block, they removed the marble facade a couple of weeks ago and replaced it with MDF.

    Hard to see how this statement makes sense unless aib is closing its branches in larger towns. These are the only places post offices remain open!!
    I think this denial is merely another untruth- a symptom of the banking sector!

    AIB will have An Post do all their dirty work so that AIB can close loads of branches and generate more profit from less work.

    I feel sorry for frontline staff if this proves to be true. From my experience in the bank, to be rewarded with ‘we’re closing your branch’ is a slap in the face.

    AIB blatantly lies again as its spin doctors come up with yet more obfuscation. Watch this space, they will admit it later with a different twist. You just cannot trust the banks anymore. They are in a rut, deny everything first, then tweak it as it goes along.
