Ryanair says it is trying to speed up processing customer refunds from March to June

Pilots at the airline have accepted a 20% pay cut to “minimise job losses”.

RYANAIR PILOTS HAVE accepted a 20% pay cut which will be restored over a four-year period, the airline has said.

The four-year agreement includes a 20% pay cut, productivity improvements on rosters, flexible working patterns and annual leave.

Ryanair said these measures will “minimise Irish pilot job losses”. Ryanair pilots in the UK accepted a similar deal earlier this week.

The airline also said Fórsa trade union has signed agreements for cabin crew for pay cuts of up to 10%, also restored over four years, along with productivity improvements.

These measures are currently being voted on by Fórsa members.

Meanwhile, Ryanair said it has made “rapid progress” in processing customer refunds for flights cancelled between March and June.

Extra refund staff have been trained since 1 June to cut down the backlog of customer refunds, the airline said.

All cash refund requests from March are cleared and half of the April cash refunds are cleared. The balance of these are set to be cleared by 15 July.

By the end of this month, all cash refunds from May and most from June will have been processed.

These figures include passengers who have accepted travel vouchers and/or flight switches in July, August or September this year.

Staff agreement

The CEO of Ryanair, Eddie Wilson, said the acceptance of staff measures like pay cuts “demonstrated the commitment” from pilots to continue employment in the company as it works its way “through this crisis over the next number of years”.

The airline added in a statement: “This agreement gives Ryanair a framework to flex its operation during the Covid-19 crisis and a pathway to recovery when the business returns to normal in the years ahead.”

On Wednesday, CEO Eddie Wilson said that people are “not going to lose their heads” while on holiday, as the airline ramped up its summer flight schedule.

More than 1,000 flights per day will be operated by Ryanair, which has run a skeleton schedule since mid-March due to the pandemic.

It has restored almost 90% of its route network but frequencies will be lower than normal, with just 40% of its normal July capacity.

Although I’m fairly biased, it seems that Limerick is now being recognised as a great location for investment. The motorway makes it only 2 hours from Dublin and both Cork and Galway are only a little over an hour away too. There’s an international airport and a deep sea port on our doorstep too. The future looks bright :)

Yeah, It helps I’m sure. But the location and infrastructure are probably more significant factors if a company is taking a long term decision to set up in a region.

You are right,I was in Limerick before Christmas and I was surprised by the level of activity around the city,a lot has changed for the better since the eighties when i was employed constructing the Alcan plant near Foynes, and as a Cork Munster supporter the Thomond park redevelopement must be a positive effect on the economic life of the city, what would be even more benificial for both county’s and the entire west is a commitment to build the motorway on the Cork side to link up with the Croom bypass.

I suspect that motorway will be announced before the election. Apparently the NRA have been making enquiries to landowners in the area in the last few months. If and when it happens it will do a lot for both Cork and Limerick. I’m not sure people realise how important for the economy that connectivity is. Even if people in Limerick and Cork cities never travel between the two cities, they should be screaming at their local politicians to ensure this motorway gets built.

Let’s look at the areas again:

“IT, data analytics, clinical science, project management, finance and human resources.” The first 4 parts would be primarily based in science and the latter parts could be also part of the science and finance markets, albeit in a different aspect within that area. You hardly believe that the jobs are going into construction project management do you?

Thomas yes I agree and eventually it might pay off to some extent I am sure. But it still doesn’t explain how people that were in the construction industry which suffered probably the worst job losses are still going to link in to this area of science and finance. Both of which too are by and large multinational led and fragile based on whether our wages rise (which they have too) and whether they can ultimately get the same service in a far cheaper economy.

Other Tom Gateway and Dell were under the sphere of Computer Science and look how stable those jobs were? Also look at the finance industry in this country and how stable that was?

A better and more sustainable way to create full employment on a permanent basis would be to implement a Job Guarantee. The sovereign state with a floating currency such as the U.S. Japan, U.K, Australia etc faces no financial constraints in its own currency. The state may face real resource limitations (e.g. energy) but not a financial constraint as it can never be insolvent in its own currency as it issues that currency. Neither is inflation a concern in the current recession where vast resources (including labour) are lying idle. The only ingredient missing are the keyboard strokes to create the fiat currency to put those resources to productive work and increase the real wealth of goods and services to be shared by us all.

This ability to keyboard money into existence at will should be utilized to implement macro economic policy which benefits the vast majority of the citizens (labour) as opposed to current policy which enriches the minority (captial owners) . The primary plank of this policy should be the Job Guarantee (JG) where the state/government acts as the employer of last resort who finance the scheme using their ability to create the domestic currency at will to pay the wages of the JG participants. In a Eurozone context, it would be the ECB who would finance member state spending to implement their national JG schemes.

The JG would be a strictly voluntary, transitional employment, available to any and all unemployed, or underemployed, who wish to avail of it. It does not replace existing social welfare provisions but operates alongside them. The JG employment is intended to be transitional, its numbers fluctuating in an automatic counter cyclical fashion so rising during recession and falling as the economy improves. The jobs are transitional to ‘normal’ employment in the private or public sector, and must not compete with ordinary employment. So, the JG jobs need to be exclusively in the Community, Voluntary and Charity sectors and at full time (40) hours or any fraction thereof which the worker chooses. The JG wage must be fixed at the minimum wage which is determined by the lowest acceptable standard of living. This creates an effective wage floor for labour. Capital owners must pay more than JG rates and/or offer better benefits etc to convince people to work for them.

The Government would supplement the JG earnings with a wide range of social wage expenditures, including adequate levels of public education, health, child care etc. The JG would be integrated into a coherent training framework to allow workers (by their own choice) to choose a variety of training paths while still working in the JG. However, if they chose not to undertake further training no pressure would be placed upon them.
The JG also fulfills a critical macro economic function, the maintenance of aggregate demand and spending in the economy. It’s always aggregate demand spending that ultimately creates and maintains jobs. Someone’s spending is always someone else’s job and income as the macro economy is circular. It is the aggregate spending of everyone in the economy, public, private, individuals and businesses that maintains and creates employment. When aggregate demand is either too little (unemployment high), or too much (inflation rising), it is only the government (central bank) that can act counter cyclically to make the appropriate adjustment. The government can remove money from the economy via taxation in order to combat inflation or pump stimulus spending into the system to counteract unemployment. Another key element is that full employment maximizes the production of real wealth (goods & services) to be shared by us all and so drives up GDP and living standards for everyone.

The JG program would also reap huge benefits in social terms as the cost to the individuals, families and society of unemployment is immense. This cost can be seen in the homeless crisis, family break ups, mental health issues for parents and children, social isolation, declining skills, drug abuse, crime etc. All these societal problems would eased significantly if full employment became a reality.

The current reality however is that unemployment is a deliberate policy choice of neo liberal capitalism, not an unfortunate but unavoidable condition of the modern economy as we’re led to believe. The only missing ingredient to put the people to work are the necessary keystrokes.
