TWO MEN HAVE been arrested on suspicion of making threats to endanger an aircraft after a Ryanair flight from Krakow to Dublin was forced to divert to Stansted Airport.
The flight made an emergency landing after a note was discovered in one of the plane’s toilets claiming there were explosives on board.
In a statement, Ryanair said: “The captain followed procedure by alerting the UK authorities and diverted to the nearest airport (Stansted) where the plane landed normally, but was taxied to a remote stand where passengers disembarked safely.”
Essex Police earlier said the Ryanair flight had been diverted due to “reports of a security alert”, but confirmed that nothing suspicious was found on board after investigations.
Two men, aged 47 and 26, are in custody. Both of them had been on the flight, police said.
A force spokesman said: “A flight from Krakow to Dublin was diverted to Stansted Airport at around 6.40pm on Monday July 13 due to reports of a security alert.
“Following investigations on the plane, we have been able to establish there is nothing suspicious on board.
“The aircraft has been handed back to Stansted Airport and the operator.”
The plane was escorted to Stansted Airport by RAF Typhoon jets which were scrambled from Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

Not the first time there’s been explosives in a Ryanair toilet

@Hans Vos: I didn’t spot the toilet humour at first also. Of course an incident like this has to be taken very seriously and it seems all correct protocols for such a security alert were followed. If in UK airspace Stansted is the designated diversion airport and a RAF scramble has to be called for escort.
Scary stuff
It would be nice to know how many passengers were on board…. How many Irish and how many Polish etc . And any other nationalities..

@Barry Larkin: because Ryanair 737 flights from Krakow seat 189 passengers and I wanted to know how many people had been booked on the flight to calculate how many empty seats were left.
I would like a passenger breakdown of nationalities to determine the level of movement of peoples coming to Ireland in a time when travel to and from Ireland is required to be only for essential reasons.
It also simple to determine that historically terrorists do not leave notes in toilets if they are going to bomb an aeroplane, or if they intend to hijack. But I also know that the Captain on board had to divert as a precaution.
Put simply I wanted an ease of mind to know by simple deduction will the authorities have an easy job in catching the morans involoved in what is now a very costly prank.
@Paul Buckley: congratulations to the authorities that incentivised comments and attitudes like yours. I’m sure they didn’t expect their demonisation of travel would be as successful in unleashing the isolationists and border control people hiding under the excuse of a virus.
If one of your family falls ill, or you have an elderly relative or family you need to visit in another country or while you’re away from your country , I wish you & the government and health spokespersons precisely the same anxiety people like you cause to others. I think that’s totally fair.

@Paul Buckley: how exactly will you be able to determine whether someone’s trip is essential by virtue of their nationality? And no, Ireland is not restricted to essential trips only. Unlike countries which implemented such restrictive measures, (all EU/EEA countries have now lifted these restrictions for other EU/EEA countries) in Ireland you dont need to justify your purpose of travel. You just need to complete a locator form. Finally, what you are asking for (breakdown of passangers nationalities) is a breach of data protection.
@Paul Buckley: considering Poland has an infection rate 80% lower than Ireland, and a mortality rate of 4%, to Ireland’s 6.2%, I’d think the Poles might be more concerned about the return flight than you appear to be about this one.
@Paul Buckley: this is an article on a bomb scare on a ryanair flight, not a covid-19 article. Hardly makes much difference if they were Chinese , Irish, English or any other nationality. Terrorism or covid-19 isn’t linked to one particular nation. We’re in this together

You go girl and tell them to make suire they wash their hands (20 seconds) and wear face masks (mandatory on planes) while they socially-distanced desactivate any device. And note that had it reached Irish airspace, due to under funding by successive govts we have no fast jet aircraft that could quickly intercept and escort it to an airport, we would need to ask the RAF to do it for us.

@Mark Malone: Denmark , with a similar sized economy (all be it a different model) and population of 5 mill, manage to maintain a small fleet of F16s , and have just introduced a number of F35s to boot …. Granted , DK are part of NATO, it still doesn’t take from the fact that Ireland are years behind as usual .
