Work begins on €5.6 million greenway by the River Dodder

The greenway will connect the city centre to the Dublin Mountains.

WORK STARTED TODAY on a multi-million euro greenway by the River Dodder in Dublin.

South Dublin County Council is building three new pedestrian and cycle bridges, 750 metres of new path and 2.6km of upgraded paths.

This phase of the project will cost approximately €5.6 million.

The bridges are part of the overall Dodder Greenway, linking the city centre to the Dublin Mountains via Ballsbridge, Miltown, Rathfarnham, Firhouse and Tallaght.

The south Dublin section of the greenway stretches from the Bohernabreena Reservoir in Tallaght to Orwell Park in Rathfarnham. From here the greenway continues into Dublin city centre to Sir John Rogersons Quay.

Councillor Ed O’Brien, Mayor of South Dublin County, turned the sod on the site today. He said these greenways will be “vital” to the capital in the coming years “as we try to provide an alternative to car transport whilst at the same time providing scenic routes to cycle through for residents”.

Money well spent. Hopefully will get more cyclists off the road and onto safer paths….

@Lydia McLoughlin: it dangerous to use a road bike or TT bike on cycle lanes or greenways.
Therefore bicycles in excess of 25kph should use the road

@Liam Ó hAodha: but that doesnt happen in many cases, you could give some cyclists a purposely built cycle lane the width of an M50 lane and theyd still use the car lane …why bother making these purposely built lanes at all?

Personaly I think cycle lanes and paths are great when done well. There are some lanes in this country which were done very badly indeed, some are completly embarrassing. Havent said that, I cant get my head around people who when they have a perfect cycle lane continue to put themselves and others in harms way.

@Christopher Richardson: it’s safer to just stay on the road rather than weave in and out on the cycle lnes where people are allowed to park

@SC: Also, if the cycle lane gives priority to every minor road it meets then most cyclists will remain on the road to avoid having to keep on stopping and starting

@Christopher Richardson: It might be interesting to compare notes on what you reckon is a ‘perfect cycle lane’. It’s hard to tell whether a lane is perfect or not from behind the windscreen.

@SC: I am refering to lanes which are perfectly made have absolutely no obstructions of any kind and in some cases as wide as they are for cars. I will give 1 example Baldonnel road (I have more). I totally understand where your coming from. I dont have it in for cyclists as a rule by the way. Just the ones, who like many motorists are a danger to others.

@Shane Hogan: Just for the record I also cycle. I am not referring to every single bicycle lane, in fact I would agree that the majority is badly flawed and designed. I am refering the occasional one which there are the odd few I must admit. But are completely ignored by the occasional few.

@SB ina n-aonar: A road section with cycle lane that I use in Sligo requires the cyclist to yield 7 times where cars do not have to yield once. Who designs these things? What are they thinking?

@Christopher Richardson: Why? If I’m cycling at 30-35KpH, if the cycle lane beside the road yields to every minor road it meets but the road doesn’t, there is no way I’ll use the cycle lane, no matter HOW good or expensive it is otherwise

@SB ina n-aonar: I have neighbour when I ask him why he parks in the bicycle lane he has he says its quicker than using the parking spots around the back. He says they should have designed the area better. Some people would agree with him.

@Christopher Richardson: The important difference Christopher, is that your neighbour is breaking the law by parking on the cycle lane. The cyclist cycling on the road is not breaking the law.
