Marks & Spencer to cut 950 jobs in the UK — but its Irish stores are 'unaffected'

M&S was in the middle of a restructuring when the pandemic hit.

MARKS & SPENCER HAS announced plans to shed 950 jobs as part of a major restructuring of its UK operations.

Jobs at the retailer’s Irish stores are not affected by today’s announcement — which relates only to the UK business — a spokesperson for the company confirmed.

According to a statement on the group’s website, jobs will be shed across store management, property and head office roles as the group looks to accelerate its planned restructuring programme.

M&S was in the middle of a major revamp of its operations when the pandemic hit and in the last year, the group has closed down 54 UK stores in a bid to cut costs.

In May, in response to the pandemic, the group announced that it would accelerate its transformation with an initiative called ‘Never the Same Again’.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Sacha Berendji, director of retail, operations and property at M&S, said that the job cuts “reflect an important next step in our ‘Never the Same Again’ programme to accelerate our transformation and become a stronger, leaner and more resilient business.

“Through the crisis, we have seen how we can work faster and more flexibly by empowering store teams and it’s essential that we embed that way of working. Our priority now is to support all those affected through the consultation process and beyond.”

The announcement comes just a day after another UK fashion retailer, Ted Baker, announced that it plans to shed 500 jobs, more than a quarter of its UK workforce.

Let me guess, you think humanity is going to be wiped out unless we sacrifice our basic industries to chance the weather.

@Christopher O’Brien: Ireland Inc. I truly believe is not a long term model. When push comes to shove and rakes of American investment leaves for yes protectionist reasons and also for anti-competitive green policies on employees, employers, consumers, commuters and other economic participants, we will look back at this time of ‘boom’ in ireland and wonder where our foresight was and why we don’t have any backup energy. . We should be exploiting out natural resources intelligently instead of importing from hostile foreign actors or from allies who are smarter than us re en every security.

Eamon Ryan is an extremist politician. Martin and to a slightly lesser extent Varadkar are also anti-common sense energy wise, but at least they’re not 100% ideologically driven by Greta Thunberg.

@Alfie Breachnach: Eamon Ryan’s number 1 goal is literally to ensure Ireland avails of our natural resources to ensure sustainable energy for Ireland. But we are still reliant on foreign gas and oil and it is not a quick process to change. But he has announced offshore wind farms and solar projects. I wonder are you one of the people with a “No Solar” sign in your garden?

@Paul Ennis: But Paul, If that is the number 1 goal of the Green party, it needs to be tempered with some common sense. One of the very few tax increases during the budget was the carbon tax, a tax that had already been increased earlier in the year during the cost of living crisis. People do what they can as they can as far as the environment is concerned, but the big thing turning people against the Green movement is the Green party itself.

@D Farrell: Do you really have faith in the Irish government and semi-state operations when it comes to replacing our energy consumption with offshore wind?

If the Irish government had a good track record of massive, cost effective infrastructure projects, I might support this transition. But unfortunately successive and current government parties are incapable of building anything. Children’s hospital will be over €2B. 2 basic tram lines for our largest city and no anywhere else. Inability to manage predictable flooding in prone places eg Middleton, fiber optic being promised for nationwide rollout in 2017 and in 2023 it’s not finished.

Every country has problems, not just Ireland: but I’ve been to 84 countries and our country is miles behind much poorer countries. Bizarre.

Can Eamon Ryan explain why 130 plus electric buses have been parked up in Dublin for over a year because there was no charging points in place.
These electric buses cost €500,000 each…Ryan and FFG ministers fell over themselves for the photo opp when the buses arrived to great fanfare. The same politicians Eamon are now a year older and the buses are a year older also..Wonder will Ryan and the other FFG ministers go for another photo opp..This time carrying dusters to clean the buses which have gathered a lot of dust….Forward planning is certainly not the forte of Eamon Ryan.

It was meant to be nothing more than a humourous dig at Eamon Ryan. Let’s face it, he tends to invite ridicule with many of his detached from reality comments on various subjects. I really have no opinion on any future Sinn Féin/Green Party coalition. Hopefully, that satisfies your desire for the clarification of something that didn’t require clarifying in the first place…

Far more than FF and FG ever did. There was always a level of respect between FG and FF. That absolutely is not there between FG and SF. Pearse and Leo I am quite sure would love to thump lumps out of each other. Therefore that leaves SFs options as FF or the greens/independents. I think there will be a party revolt if Martin tries to lead FF into coalition with SF. It’s possible but very challenging. SF will NOT get a majority. So they will need a handful of independents
/smaller parties AND the greens. The greens will never be more powerful than in that government as they will hold all the sway.

@The Gate Florist: the greens could essentially collapse the government whenever their needs or wants are not pandered too and as SF will know full well, they have no problem propping FG and FF into power. The greens will have SF over a barrel. You are lying to yourself if you think the greens won’t be worse in government with SF than they currently are. Of course this will all depend on government make up / the number of seats the greens will have / the strength of the coalition and majority. But I would put all that on shakey ground tbh and you can add to that SFs inexperience in leading, they will be there for absolute abuse by the greens. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Sinn Fein, I’m voting for you for the first time because I can’t cope with the same parties over and over again doing absolutely nothing for the country. Do I believe you will do well? Probably not but hopefully it will give fianna F/G a kick up the backside to realise they are not guaranteed to sit in the dail BUT if you do a good job and go into coalition with the Green Party I will never vote for you again. Eamon Ryan is possibly the most useless thing to come out of Ireland in a long while. But something has to change, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Fianna F/G have had their heyday and the country is still in tatters. I wish there was an alternative but there’s not.

If there’s any justice in this Country, not 1 single Green will get a vote, they won’t have to worry about joining any party, because whether is be SF,FF,FG,they have all drank the soup from the EU,Our ancestors gave everything they had,so many gave their lives to free us,and now we’re back to where we were before all those brave people stood up for us.and our generation any of us over 50 haven’t done 1 thing about it,History will show how we failed our families before us,We had the best life out of all our generations, but sadly we only looked out for ourselves, and let our Country be taking again, leaving nothing of our Country or Cultural for our generations to come, all we have left is our land, and that’s been taking aswell…

The green party didn’t get so many seats in this government because of their policies, they got them because they’re not sinn fein. People needing a protest candidate, to vote against the big centrist parties, wouldn’t vote for the IRA proxy party in a million years, but they were happy to lend their votes to a benign, non-violent and non-criminal party like the greens.
