A SURVEY HAS found that many of us check social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter while away on holiday.
A survey of over 200 people, 69 per cent of whom were women aged between 18 and 55, by Hotels.com has revealed that three-quarters of people (75 per cent) spend at least a few minutes per day while away on holidays checking their Facebook and Twitter to find out what’s going on at home.
An overwhelming 99 per cent of the Irish holidaymakers surveyed admit to logging on to one or more social networking sites while on holiday.
Facebook is the most popular choice with nine-out-of-ten people saying they check their Facebook profile while away followed by just over half of people (51 per cent) who admit to tweeting and 7 per cent who say they check their LinkedIn.
Those surveyed said that the main reason for checking their social networking profiles was to keep an eye on what was going on with their friends back home (51 per cent).
Others identify more devious reasons such as 15 per cent of those who say they log on to make family and friends jealous of where they are and 10 per cent who said boredom is a reason for logging on.
Around 53 per cent of holidaymakers said that uploading pictures is their favourite holiday activity followed by updating their status (49 per cent) and checking in (44 per cent) on Facebook.

Another finding was that just under half of those questioned (48 per cent) said that on an average one week holiday they spend up to an hour of that week on Facebook and Twitter.
Over one in four (28 per cent) say the spend up to two hours on social networking.

People check fb and twitter on holiday so they can update their status and tell all of us stuck in the rain what a great time they’re having! :)

It’s much more relaxing just to escape everything that’s going on at home if you’re lucky enough to get away. Facebook will still be there when you get back and you won’t have wasted away your time away. If you need to be contacted …your friends will contact you
I don’t get why this is news either. The idea that you shouldn’t go near a laptop etc while on holiday is ridiculous. Often, it’s actually nice to relax at a laptop to some extent.
I’d be interested to see how many people go on their holidays with a bunch of books. Now that’s something that’s pointless – spending a load of money to do something you could do at home – only on a beach.
I just wonder are people really paying extortionate data roaming charges to check Facebook on holidays.
I totted up 168 euro data roaming in 3 days. told vodafone they can go stuff themselves. I’m fighting a loosing battle though
Many hotels have free wifi.
I’m on the 3 Network. I can’t use my phone for any reason abroad. They would charge me back to the stone age

I think you’re right. It I’m going to France where charges are huge. Vodafone have no roaming charges in France and when I was with them it wa great. Using 3 would cost me a fortune though. It’s a complete rip off. Roaming charges make little sense. People praise the fact that they have come down but in my opinion it’s jut another catch. Every network have sister networks abroad. There is no excuse for these extra charges. I genuinely can’t have my phone on over there other than airplane mode or my bill will be huge and who has the money these days
The future is a sad place.
Change ‘I don’t go on holidays’ to ‘I can’t afford to go on holidays’…….
