PLANS HAVE BEEN unveiled for Culture Night 2020, promising a mix of digital and physical events all across Ireland.
Now in its 15th year, Culture Night is an all-Ireland event with towns and cities all across the country hosting free cultural events in spaces like art galleries and museums.
However, Culture Night this year will be radically different due to the Covid-19 pandemic as indoor gatherings of more than 50 people or outdoor gatherings with more than 200 people are banned.
Despite the situation, the organisers want to ensure that Culture Night remains true to its legacy, and will still hold physical events alongside digital events for the first time.
Aimée van Wylich, the national coordinator for Culture Night told TheJournal.ie that digital events are a good opportunity for people to experience Irish culture at home and abroad.
“It’s an element that Culture Night hasn’t really featured before,” said van Wylich, adding that it’s something that will be looked at even after this year.
Van Wylich also added that digital events help provide more accessibility to arts and culture, with more people being able to access interesting content.
The Arts Council will be the primary funder for all events taking place, with director Maureen Kennelly saying that it will be a fantastic opportunity for artists.
“While this year presents new challenges for the cultural sector, we see Culture Night as a fantastic opportunity for artists, arts organisations and audiences to connect, online and offline, and to celebrate the value that the arts brings to our lives,” said Kennelly.
This year, Culture Night has appointed new trailblazers, which are artists who represent the scale and diversity of culture in Ireland.
They come from various cultural disciplines, including music, dance, literature and theatre.
For the first time, an international trailblazer will be featured, with podcaster and author Maeve Higgins representing Irish cultural diaspora.

As part of the festivities, RTÉ will be showcasing new content commissioned from all around the country.

For photography fans, there’s Bob Dixon’s Photography which will show off portraits of musicians, poets and painters that Dixon has worked with in the past. The gallery will be entirely digital with no booking required.
A short film on the discovery of the Nebula Whirlpool will be broadcast live on social media. Filmed on location in Birr Castle, the film is a collaborative effort from composer Ann Cleare, singer Pascal Kennedy, cinematographer Brendan Farrell and director Fiona Breen.

For those in Dundalk, there will be a family ceramics workshop held in An Táin Arts Centre for all budding artists. With only two workshops being held on the day, booking is essential to secure a spot.
For music or architecture fans in Dublin, you can pay a visit to 1WML where you can explore the future workspace or the musical legacy of Windmill Lane. With no booking required, you can catch some live music too.
There is also more yet to be revealed, with van Wylich saying this is only “one glimpse of what’s coming down the line.”

@Liam Ó hAodha: Pissing in a wetsuit is pretty grim too. I’d have no problem wearing something else but wetsuits you’re keeping a body temperature layer of water next to your skin to keep you warm and then mixing a kidneyload into that to stew until it eventually filters out into the water

TO PEE OR NOT TO PEE… sure its the same “water” that been recycled since the beginning…! methinks that his is a marketing ploy to get us over to the sunny Spain! maybe?
Interesting that Spain at least see a reason for building public toilets. Reading the original article, they seem more concerned with people washing in the sea with soap and shampoo.

Madness! Sure, look at all large mammals in the ocean, such as Whales and in particular Humpback Whales are producing tonnes upon tonnes of waste. Mammal waste offers nutritional benefits to ocean life.

This is is to stop people defecating. Nobody cares if people are peeing.
It also covers spitting, menstruating, ejaculating and vomiting.
It’s all terminology.

It’s verbiage covers the normal functions of living organisms. This includes all bodily fluids.
Menstruating. Is total my natural and healthy, it becoming a biohazard (whereby someone would discard used products in the sand or sea) is not.
This law covers that quite rightly.
Nobody is getting fined for minor infractions (peeing – which will become infinitely diluted), but actual offences where there is matter which becomes biohazard to other people will result in a proper fine.
TLDR. A small minority of people are gross and so disgusting things and we have to legislate to stop them doing it which affects the majority of people who are sensible and cultured.

Was once in Florida during spring break and witnessed drunk people drinking a pint of alcohol and then measuring the induced vomit to see who brought up the least.
Some people lack class, brains and culture and ruin things for the majority who do not.
@Sequoia: I can’t help wondering if there’s an aspect of this that excludes homeless people who might otherwise seek to stay clean if they have to resort to sleeping on beaches. It seems more about waste products contaminating their coast.
I wonder if it is worse than pesticides and wastes going into rivers then sea. Can the Journal factcheck do a comparison report?
I surfed at Lahich for many years. Depending on the tide and currents occasionally I found my self swimming in a shoal of “Brown Trout” from the raw sewage out fall for the town. I only got 2 nasty kidney infections that required anti biotics in 20 years surfing there, still 2 to many. So don’t, piss in the sea if you can avoid it, its nasty to fellow swimmers and attracts sharks, and never piss in your wetsuit, its rots the suit and you will end up with a nasty rash down below.
This must be the Spanish version of April Fools.

Dont know this spanish resort but if they’re banning peeing in the sea (how they’ll know iv no idea) they must be installing plenty of public toilets which will also need cleaning on a regular basis, because u can be sure restaurants won’t want people trudging in n out to use toilets

Seriously? Is common sense completely gone now? Even aside from actual sewage going into the sea, fish, whales, seals, etc all do their toilet business in the water, in fact they literally eat, sleep, poop and breathe in it. What’s one human’s pee when all of that is going on already?
