Your evening longread: How I learned to be proud of my plus-size body

It’s a coronavirus-free zone as we bring you an interesting longread each evening to take your mind off the news.

EVERY WEEK, WE bring you a round-up of the best longreads of the past seven days in Sitdown Sunday.

And now, every weeknight, we bring you an evening longread to enjoy which will help you to escape the news cycle.

We’ll be keeping an eye on new longreads and digging back into the archives for some classics.

Body positivity

Stephanie Yeboah grew up under pressure over her weight, which combined with prejudice over her race, led to her feeling terrible about herself. Here, she writes about how she realised her own worth.

(The Guardian, approx 10 mins reading time)

This mindset worsened at secondary school, when the physical and verbal bullying began. The bullies focussed on my weight and the shade of my skin. For five years I was beaten, strangled, hit repeatedly and constantly told that I wouldn’t amount to anything, because of my physical appearance. Three years into the bullying, I decided to open up to my parents about the abuse, and was subsequently told that “had I lost weight, I wouldn’t be the victim” – that the fault lay with me. It was at that moment I internalised self-hate towards my body. I thought: “I deserve to be bullied and treated unfairly, because of my weight.”

@John Considine: My point is it wasn’t a burglary. They went there with the intention of attacking the man In question. What they did is abhorrent but burglary it wasn’t!

Dragging somebody out of bed and dousing them in petrol is attempted murder. How can it be aggravated burglary when nothing was stolen?

@superdooper: a man was doused in petrol and set alight. Aggravated Burglary should be the least of their worries, Greivious Bodily Harm at least if not attempted murder , I think the maximum sentence should apply here if found guilty.

The whole sentencing system should be reformed. Longer sentences for crimes. Life for murder should be life.
There was a time when you saw a garda it meant something. Now there is no fear. Two garda shot at during week. Thats atemted murder.
