PROTESTERS THREW STONES at police and burned tyres in southern Sweden late last night, authorities said, hours after an anti-Muslim Danish politician was blocked from attending a Koran-burning rally nearby.
About 300 people were on the streets of Malmo with violence escalating as the evening wore on, according to police and local media.
The demonstration was connected to an incident earlier in the day in which protesters burned a copy of the Islamic holy book, police spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told Swedish tabloid Expressen.
Rasmus Paludan, who leads the far-right Danish anti-immigration party Hard Line, was due to travel to Malmo to speak at that event, which was being held on the same day as weekly prayers for the Muslim sabbath.
But authorities pre-empted Paludan’s arrival by announcing he had been banned from entering Sweden for two years. He was later arrested near Malmo.
“We suspect that he was going to break the law in Sweden,” Calle Persson, spokesman for the police in Malmo told AFP.
“There was also a risk that his behaviour… would pose a threat to society.”
But his supporters went ahead with the rally, and three people were then arrested for inciting racial hatred.
Paludan later put up a scathing message on Facebook.
“Sent back and banned from Sweden for two years. However, rapists and murderers are always welcome!” he wrote.
Paludan last year attracted media attention for burning a Koran wrapped in bacon — a meat that is anathema for Muslims.

These far right fanatics sure do have some high levels of hate in their hearts. Decent law abiding people must never allow themselves to be persuaded that their woes and misfortunes are because of the immigrant man and woman. Irish emigrants suffered this type of hatred in the past and should know more than most how it feels.

@Philip Kavanagh: Sweden is very segregated compared to Ireland. You can go to areas that are like Sweden of old and go to areas that are literally like Iraq. I’d take a guess that you spent the majority of your time in the former.
@James Beattie: The bombs in Sweden are to do with feuds and turf wars between Swedish drug gangs and the violent crime rate there has been steadily falling for years. There was a brief spike in reported rape a few years ago when they broadened the definition, but was due to more offences falling under the category than a rise in actual offences.
@Francis Devenney: The rapes in Malmo are carried out by a disproportionate amount of immigrants who are born abroad, think it’s 60% off the top off my head, that doesn’t include immigrants who were born in Sweden.
Do people really think native Swedish have all of a sudden gone rape crazy since mass immigration there? Doesn’t really add up to me. I get the need to defend a group of people from criticism, especially if the criticism goes against your world view, but it’s just insulting peoples intelligence when people deny that its overwhelmingly likely there’s a link between the mass immigration of groups of people who largely don’t have the same respect or morals towards women as European natives and the high increase in rape numbers.

Apparently a tv station got those stats from convictions.

People are attracted to drama and the media will give it to them for ratings – in the form of only highlighting the most extreme opinions on every side of an issue, when reality is that most people have pretty moderate views.

More and more riots many people are angry having to live this new way of life, it manifests into hate, mental health has been destabilised for many, anxiety and financial stress is adding to peoples long term fears of unemployment debt and homelessness, its no excuse for hate but unfortunately its how some people react on their insecurities.

A bit off topic, but there are protests in Berlin and London today similar to the protest last Saturday in Dublin.
Crowds much larger obviously, but the purpose is pretty much the same.

@Bryen O Murchu: you are right. Religion has been a masquerade for conquest and greed. However that being said some religions have actually evolved over the centuries to align with humanist values. Others have not.
We have another religion, consumption and growth, which is really worse than any extreme interpretation of a religion. We are literally consuming ourselves into extinction.
Just my two cents. I would have thought this is religious bigotry/hatred rather than racism. The issue encompassed religion.
@ÓDuibhír Abú: Integration is a double-edged sword. If the people of a country don’t offer a hand but ready to burn the book you consider as holy, you probably won’t try to make friends with that group but to stay in the subculture they promoted to grow for you.

Predictably many of the comments on this article are repeating the usual tropes about Islam referring to passages in the Koran as if this somehow this sinister and appalling act of Islamophobic violence. The first reaction of anyone with any shred of human decency should be to condemn this, instead of relativizing and engage in whataboutery. Anyone can pick out numerous passages in both the Old Testament and the New Testament insisting that blasphemers, adulterers, gays etc must be stoned for transgressions of God’s law. One can also find many passages of beautiful prose and poetry such as the Book of Job, the Psalms and the Beatitudes etc and likewise in the Koran.
There were many who suggested the Jews were somehow to blame for the Nazis book burning and even the Holocaust including quite a few in this country by repeating the usual tropes about Jews being greedy money lenders etc.
We should be very worried that the far right is openly doing this. They are now also increasingly targeting Jews. While there have been appalling acts of terrorism committed by Islamic extremists, most acts of terrorism on the continent have in fact been committed by the far right.
One is either on the side of the oppressed, be they Muslims, Jews, the LGBT+ community etc or on the side of the racists and the fascists or suggesting they might have a valid reason reason for their bigotry and hatred.

Hi all, lived in the outskirts of Goteborg last year and worked 50km North in a place called stengunsund… I was part of 2 different regions.. Never once did I see any hatred religious or racist acts in public or private towards myself or any race or religion!! By the way Sweden is not a Catholic predominantly country anyway!! Belief in a supreme supernatural creator is itself a form of madness which makes a good share of the world’s population starkers and makes the above mentioned protest a big ole waste of energy.
People couldn’t show better that they aren’t able or willing to integrate foreigners.
I would just assume the same guy who burned the Qur’an was giving out about Muslims not willing to integrate.
